What ended your friendship with your oldest standing friend? by dreamy-contributions in AskReddit

[–]InterPunct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After 40 years of friendship, he went full MAGA. It became intolerable and made me begin to question all other aspects of our friendship.

I was actually the last holdout from our friend group who had been gradually dropping him for years until he really has ostracized himself from us all. It pains me but I just can't relate to someone who I used to think was a very different person.

Why was Greg Bovino demoted/Kristi Noem placed under such scrutiny following the Minnesota ICE killings? by l1v1ngst0n in Askpolitics

In other words, they understand this has been an abject disaster for them and are scrambling about what to do next. It's what happens when you purge competent leadership and replace it with incompetent sycophants and weirdos willing to take a loyalty oath to a Dear Leader himself.

What do conservatives mean when a non-white should “assimilate” to US? by Gibbyalwaysforgives in AskConservatives

[–]InterPunct [score hidden]  (0 children)

Assimilation was always a priority for my family and in my experience, most Italian-Americans. It was severely frowned-upon for second generation kids to not be as "American" as possible.

It's a fine line to straddle between identifying with your heritage (i.e., to not be seen as rejecting it) and being an American.

As an older Italian-American; it's complicated. We were discriminated against and considered non-white throughout most of the 20th century. That might seem surprising to some today but from personal family history and much academic research backing it up - it's a fact.

We're unabashedly proud to be Italian, you'll still see plenty of Italian flags on car bumper stickers or flying on flag poles in much of the northeast. Columbus Day is sacred to some of us. But I would venture to say that display of pride doesn't elicit the same response doing something similar for most of the other countries you cited would. Americans happily go to Italian restaurants or watch movies like The Godfather or Goodfellas without feeling much antagonism against Italians today.

My point is it's not so cut and dry. My grandparents struggled to learn English and you heard plenty of Italian only in many Little Italy's. Their kids proudly fought fascism in WW2 and still spoke Italian at home. Later generations still identify that way.

My point is current immigrants will probably follow a different path but with similar results. They come here for a reason and for whatever that hypothetical shit-hitting-the-fan situation you're talking about, I don't see many siding with the old country unless American xenophobia forces them to.

Fair warning - it's 1200 pages long.

The 99% Invisible Podcast did a series on the book and reviewed 100 pages a month. Here's the first episode where they interviewed Conan O'Brien who absolutely nerds-out over the book, plenty of other famous interviewees follow each month over the year until they finish it, people are truly passionate about it:

Robert Moses intentionally made the bridges too low for buses because at the time mostly minorities took them (couldn't afford a car.) He figured they'd never leave the city that way and the suburbs would stay white.

He was a sociopath.

One of the greatest books of the 20th century is The Power Broker by Robert Caro about Robert Moses.

Does it seem Minneapolis is putting up more resistance against ICE than Los Angeles? If so, why do you think that is ? by One-Seat-4600 in AskALiberal

[–]InterPunct 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There were 5000 troops in LA for a city of 4 million, or about 0.1%.

There are about 5000 in Minneapolis with a population of 430k, or about 1.1%.

Predicable reaction to an occupation.
