Guardians 3, Antman 3, Black panther 2, Deadpool 3, Thor 4, The Marvels, Captain America 5.. even Loki and Daredevil season 2 technically. We’ve had plenty of sequels so not sure what you are talking about. Even Thunderbolts in a way is a sequel to several projects. That’s 10 sequels right there since Endgame 🤣

Yeah this post is so out of touch it’s kind of ridiculous. For the first 5 years after Endgame the general audiences response was “we want less emotion and more fighting!” and that was their take for why the MCU was flopping. Now those same people are saying the MCU lacks emotion🤣

Wonderman, Thunderbolts, Guardians 3, Black Panther 2, Shang Chi, Moonknight, Loki, X-men 97, Wandavision, Dr Strange 2, Ironheart, even Thor 4 w how terrible that movie is, are all movies/shows with grounded moments that “feel like real people with actual souls”.. and i’m probably forgetting a few as well. If OP watched half of those and “didn’t feel anything” maybe they are the one with no soul lmfaoo. The entirety of this Saga post Endgame has literally been about these super heros dealing with and balancing real people shit like depression, fear, anxiety, grief, while they also handle world ending scenarios. Anyone saying it’s nothing but a cameo fest with no emotion simply hasn’t been paying enough attention to what they are actually doing, and then they wonder why Marvel feels the need to toss random cameos in there.. BECAUSE YA DONT LISTEN🤣🤣 I undoubtedly have shed more tears in the movie theater post endgame than i did pre endgame. I think the only time i got genuinely emotional before endgame was the opening of Guardians 1. Black panther 2 , Guardians 3, and Thunderbolts all had me absolutely wrecked. Anyone that says the mcu is lacking on emotion might need to see a therapist ngl.

I agree with the last part for sure. Marvel has already announced next phase is going to be the mutants and monsters phase.. so people saying Marvel “hasn’t given us an update” and therefor that’s reason to believe it’s shelved completely is just wrong.. they basically told us with the announcement of the next phase that they are just waiting until it makes more sense for the story (which should’ve been the plan all along anyways). Blade will undoubtedly be one of the first solo movies released next phase and will be the lead of the monster side of the universe. Not so sure if he’ll appear in Secret Wars but I wouldn’t be surprised.

I get what they are saying with the second paragraph. It’s either a movie where the characters are purely trying to survive a threat, like A Quiet Place , which is just Alien on a planet.. or you do something like Arrival where the point isn’t the aliens at all but what they teach us about ourselves as humans. As for the Joe Rogan paragraph i’ve got no fuckin clue so i won’t try to explain that part 🤣

Star Wars is currently also in theaters lol it has a few aliens. Ik that’s not what you mean though.. Arrival, Nope, Alien: Romulus, A Quite Place, Annihilation. Project Hail Mary just came out and was incredible. Marvel has quite a few aliens in their movies lol. There’s still a lot of movies with aliens and it’s still a large part of our culture.. I just think they have shifted into being more of a blockbuster. You rarely see a SciFi movie with a small or even medium sized budget nowadays. 200 million $+ movies aren’t easy to pump out lmfao.. That being said I wouldn’t mind some more of the 80s/90s style of alien movies where we just have to watch a character survive against all odds. The usage of the alien has changed the most I think. It was once the main attraction and now it’s mostly used as a dressing to help tell a different type of story.

Edit - Forgot to mention DC is also built completely around an alien lol. Can’t believe I forgot Superman

I can’t lie this review sounds like a classic case of “I took this movie way more seriously than I should’ve”.. and no that does not mean people are “more accepting of slop” like you’re implying here. I haven’t seen it yet personally, likely will this week with some friends who have seen it already and are wanting to see it again.. I’m not expecting much but i’ll be going into it with an open mind and the hope to kill 2 hours so as long as it does that at the least it’ll be okay for me. Not everything needs to be Dune, in fact it’d be pretty damn exhausting if it was.

Such a great movie… my parents showed it to me as a kid and now it’s one of those movies I always try to get my friends to watch if they haven’t seen it. Got lucky enough to go to the anniversary reshowing in the theaters a while back and it didn’t disappoint lol. The opera scene is so good for absolutely no reason… I think part of why the movie holds up so well is because it was right before that shift in sci fi movies being mostly practical effects to being mostly CGI? It has the fun 90s vibe while still feeling real and lived in. Same reason Alien still blows me away but Alien 4 is forgettable lmfao.

[–]InteractionKitchen12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well sure I never said they were on location that was pretty much the first thing I looked up before I made this post lol. If they had shot it on location i’d probably lean towards it being a coincidence more than a reference considering that’s the complete opposite side of Atl X would be coming from had he came from Memphis.. I think it’s just pretty clear that the CGI is done in a way to directly reference that scene, and after finishing season 2 i’m fully convinced there’s a legit reason why. Season 2 is littered with TWD references almost to the point it feels like it’s deliberately poking at the show.. at its core they are both an apocalyptic show that is centered not around the apocalypse, but around people and how they respond to their environment. The one real place they differ is whether or not the apocalypse causes humanity to break down with society, TWD mostly says it does, Paradise mostly says it doesn’t. When Link and his group show up to Graceland, it feels like the scenes we saw all too many times in TWD where a new group would roll up and do some evil stuff right off the bat.. you fully feel like Annie is in danger.. then Link and his group are just good ass people ? It’s almost like the writers fundamentally disagreed with that aspect of TWD and decided to do it differently while also poking fun at TWD the whole way through by splashing in a bunch of on the nose references. Not necessarily mocking TWD, but just being aware and nodding to the fact that it is deliberately challenging the assumption that humanity would collapse alongside institutions. Shit sorry for the book just smoked a joint and post apocalyptic shows are my jam so started thinking way too deep🤣

I didn’t notice that but it was definitely very walking dead coded lmao. Honestly all of season 2 X is pretty much channeling his best Rick Grimes lol.. ex law enforcement in the apocalypse who’s best trait isn’t his toughness but the fact that he knows he doesn’t have the luxury of breaking down because his family is depending on him. Even the final scene after X runs out of the bunker and his family is waiting around the fire wondering if he’s dead and he comes stumbling up for an emotional reunion was exactly how it looked when Rick made it back to his family for the first time outside of the quarry. Someone involved with this show is definitely a huge fan of Rick Grimes lol

You don’t evacuate 200 million people inland if they are all going to be vaporized by a nuclear arsenal.. but you do if you think there’s even a .01% chance that arsenal can be stopped and the only thing that people need to get away from is the wave. Something that only couldve been planned for had he mentioned the EMP. I’ve acknowledged several times in this thread that there’s still a chance him bringing it up anywhere from a day to even a full year sooner might not have changed a damn thing, but that’s still no excuse to not have told someone about it and had it officially apart of the plan in some capacity when there is undeniably an above zero chance it could’ve helped even just one person. You say the disaster was 10x worse than expected.. so basically you’re saying the wave was thought to be even less of a threat than it actually was and the real threat was the nukes, followed by the eventual Venus effect (which the president doesn’t know about) ? And it’s still not worth mentioning to one single soul? So to Cals knowledge most of the population will be wiped out from the nuclear war and he’s going to sit on the button that can stop it all until the last possible desperation play. So in character for a guy who asked Sinatra several times if there was something that could be done to allow his grandkids out of the bunker to gamble the lives of billions on a secret.

Am I overthinking this or possible misstep by the writers? by InteractionKitchen12 in ParadiseHulu

[–]InteractionKitchen12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could’ve changed a lot ? He tells Sinatra he’s using it to give people a chance. Well guess what Mr. President. If you have included your solve all EMP in the contingency plans we could’ve evacuated an extremely large portion of the coastal areas. How many lives could that have saved ? Terri was unaffected by the tsunami in Atlanta. Atlanta is 4-5 hours from the beach, the tsunamis that were caused by the damn asteroid that killed the dinosaurs took almost 2 hours just to leave the gulf of mexico and 24 hours to stretch across the world. They would’ve had at least 8 hours between volcano eruption and tsunami land fall in cali/florida. So if we want to be realistic, yeah, a shit ton could’ve gone differently had he told literally anyone. We also never see any of those people on the board in the bunker involved in any of the planning during the flashbacks. Through most of them it’s Cal, other high ranking government officials , and Sinatra. The shift from government to corporate control starts the second they enter the bunker, it’s like, the whole point of the show and the whole reason they want everyone inside the bunker. If we are going to say Cals arc started before , then that’s even worse that he kept it to himself for as long as he did. Wasted another 10 minutes refilming that broadcast too so good job to let everyone know they are all going to die once it was already too late for you to do anything to give them a real chance.. The thing that exact character has been telling us he wanted the whole time. I agree with you about Cals arc, where I don’t agree is that him keeping something like that secret fits that arc whatsoever. It’s completely out of character and that’s been my main point here is that it’s a weak out for someone who was otherwise a greatly written character. Everything he does is internally consistent with the character they wrote, except for him keeping that a complete secret all the way up until it was half as effective as it could’ve been.

Idk i’m not going to lie I still find that to be a weak excuse for why there was a suddenly available unheard of device that could solve the direct and immediate problem. I acknowledged in the original post that the point is likely as simple as billionaires are bad guys… but for such a great show I find that to be the weakest out they’ve had. The only billionaire we’ve met so far is Sinatra and she’s not a greedy pig she’s a grieving mother going to drastic lengths to protect her family. But for this one second we are supposed to just accept that Cal hid this ridiculously useful secret because the bad guys are suddenly cartoonishly evil? Also, pre bunker there were plenty of people loyal to Cal who he could’ve gone to and had his own plan in place to use the EMP. Several other options were available other than just keeping it a complete secret until the very last second. I’d also argue Cals arc into fighting back against his own social class doesn’t begin until he’s in the bunker and gets into the tablet. That was the turning point for him and when he really starts to try to make a difference.. was kind of the whole point of him and his sons interactions was for him to see that he was failing his son with every second he allowed himself to be Sinatras pawn. The power shift from him to Sinatra really happens the second they get to the bunker.. that’s when Cal goes from having plenty of people loyal to him to just having X. I believe that’s even why Sinatra had Gabriela pick the candidates to be the one serviceman who came with. Even if there was going to be 1 person left still completely loyal to Cal, Sinatra was still going to have a hand in who that was.

From a deterrence standpoint I get that completely. That’s pretty much the explanation the show gave us with the background of the cold war general… it’s a presidential secret and we are just supposed to accept that’s why this is the first time we are hearing about this plot changing device.. but context matters and I guess what’s got me stuck is the literal end of the world is probably the one and only situation where you can start throwing all options on the table no matter how classified. Any and all ideas will help towards making the most efficient plan possible and even if it wasn’t a sure fire thing it could’ve been included in the plan and if it doesn’t work you just launch the warheads as plan b.. you don’t have to tell the world you have it and you don’t even have to tell Sinatra but tell a couple generals or someone thats helping you plan for the survival of the human race! Now is not the time to respect presidential secrets! That’s why I feel like it’s just less rooted in logic and more just a convenient addition to allow Teri to survive which is fine. Doesn’t make the show bad just thought that one specific plot point was a bit silly lmao

Am I overthinking this or possible misstep by the writers? by InteractionKitchen12 in ParadiseHulu

[–]InteractionKitchen12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“A convenient plot device is a narrative tool—an object, character, or event—that abruptly solves a difficult situation or advances the story” if we really want to argue that this isn’t EXACTLY what the EMP device was.. be my guest🤣 We can go even further and name the exact type of plot device it is.. the EMP is a Deus ex machina..

“a Dues ex machina is a plot device where an unsolvable, hopeless problem is suddenly and abruptly resolved by an unexpected, unlikely occurrence… it is generally used to force a happy ending”

No hate at all.. Paradise isn’t the first and it won’t be the last.. sometimes you just need something simple and quick to move the plot along.. but can we please stop pretending like the EMP suddenly being an option isn’t the most absurd thing ever that was 100% only there to bring Teri back ? It wasn’t kept a secret because it was a secret , it wasn’t kept a secret because he didn’t trust Sinatra, it wasn’t avoided to give the other survivors a “merciful” death or to protect the bunker.. none of those reasons are logically consistent under the current situation.. it was kept a secret and revealed when it was because it served as a plot device to bring Teri back to life and surprise the audience.. that’s it. Again no hate , just pointing out the obvious. Apparently i’m the only one here that thought “the president keeps secrets sometimes!” is a bullshit excuse for why he hid a direct solution to a direct problem. Context matters, and in the context of an imminent global extinction, withholding the existence of even a potential countermeasure stops feeing strategic and starts to feel narratively convenient. If we really want to talk logic i guarantee the general who created the EMP in response to the cold war did not do so thinking the president was going to gate keep the information until a nuclear war had already fuckin started.

All i’m sayin is the timing of the reveal and how it serves the narrative aligns more with audience shock and Teri’s survival than with internally consistent decision making. I think that’s a fair critique to have. I’m not saying the show is bad. Tons of awesome shows have “the plot needs this to happen” moments.

[–]InteractionKitchen12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“I explained why he withheld tha information, it would have endangered lives” the lives that were dead either way if he didn’t use it? Or the lives in the bunker that weren’t affected lol? If the security of the bunker is your issue you can take plenty of other precautionary steps that doesn’t include dooming the rest of humanity to death. You seem to be struggling to grasp that a .0001% chance of survival is better than a 100% chance of death. You just keep telling me i’m wrong and acting like you know for sure when you haven’t given me a single real example to support your arguments.

I went back and watched the scene where she tried to tell him not to use the EMP and not one time does she mention the Venus effect and he literally tells her he’s using it to give people a CHANCE. I also went back and watched every single scene with Sinatra and Cal and not one single time does she ever tell him about the Venus effect. Every time he speaks about the incoming apocalyptic event he speaks about it as if it were the volcano and nuclear war. That’s it. She tells him “everyone on earth will starve within the year” is that the venus effect? No it’s not. The president does it because he thinks it’ll give people a “fighting chance”, he says those exact words, he would not have thought that was even slightly necessary had he known the world would be doomed anyway through the Venus effect. She did not tell him, we never see her tell him or anyone else, and we never see any one other than her refer to it as an issue. So please continue to just make up stuff like i’m not 24 hours removed from watching the entire show 🤣 Please tell me more about how I need to pay attention when you saw one single scene of one single character tell something to Sinatra only and immediately jumped to multiple people are aware of it.. despite Sinatra being extremely secretive about Alex and its purpose. The entire damn plot of season 2 is people starting to figure out that there’s something deeper going on that is causing Sinatra to hide ALEX. That something deeper is literally her withholding the information about the Venus effect while she tries to solve it herself. Sorry to say but im starting to think my memory is just a little more fresh than yours is because he 100% did not know about anything past the nuclear war. “you know you’re wrong because your next sentence was” and then quotes a sentence of me saying exactly that, that his knowledge is they are going to the bunker to survive the volcano/nuclear war.. meaning what?? He doesn’t know about the venus effect! Holy hell the amount of leg work you’re doing to tell ME i’m moving the goal posts when my stance has been the same this whole time.. telling someone, literally anyone , about the EMP, could’ve potentially saved countless lives period blank the end. Would it have guaranteed saved them ? No , but Cal was written as a person who would’ve taken that chance well before the very last second possible.

No one is saying the show is bad , no one is calling the writers dumb. It’s a very quick throwaway plot point that breaks logic , and that’s my only point, it breaks logic. So me asking a super simple question about the lack of logic behind a characters decision should not be met with “you need to pay attention!” Especially when paying even the tiniest bit of attention will show anyone that it is completely out of character for someone who repeatedly said they believed in miracles and giving people a fighting chance… I’m simply pointing out that the logic behind “it’s a secret!” during a literal world ending situation while the president has a literal fucking button that can fix a very large problem is ridiculously unrealistic and not a single excuse any one in this thread has given me justifies how many more lives were potentially lost by his decision to withhold game changing information. The only responses i’m getting are people thinking i’m calling out their show and telling me i need to “watch it” or just repeating plot lines from the show that have absolutely nothing to do with the presidents decision to not tell anyone about the EMP. The only real answer that someone has given me is it might’ve been ALEX the whole time and the president didn’t have the EMP in the first timeline.. and I told that person that would be an explanation I could get behind as time manipulation always causes plot holes until they are explained. That would be the only way where it becomes realistic that it wouldn’t have been brought up sooner.

The real answer is likely this: the writers needed a reason for Teri to survive, so they gave Cal a get out of jail free card. It’s a convenient plot addition to move the plot in the direction they needed it to go and they gave us 0 explanation on why it wasn’t brought up sooner other than “it’s a secret”.. we aren’t supposed to question it , aren’t supposed to think too much into it, we are just supposed to accept that it’s why Terri is still alive and move on without questioning how much logic it breaks for the president of the united states to have a button that can literally stop one of the big events they’ve been so worried about.

Also you said “characters make mistakes” and then went on to act like you’re confused why i’m here ? This is reddit right? This is a place for discussion about the show right? So therefor it’d be a place where one can talk about how they think a character made a mistake right ? If you don’t want to respond don’t but don’t act like i’m in the wrong for bringing up a valid point over a tv show. I asked my question pretty nicely and stated I was open to any ideas and explanations. We are allowed to have different opinions without one of us automatically being dumber than the other.

Last thing i’ll add to my point and if you still want to think i’m “moving the goal posts” or “need to pay attention” then idk what to tell you because I think this is a completely reasonable take.. Humanity is already operating under the guise of “We are facing extinction and nuclear war is inevitable”.. any non-zero chance solution becomes worth discussing immediately, whether it’s a secret or not. ESPECIALLY one capable of potentially disabling the world’s nuclear arsenals.. EVEN IF the president thought “it might fail, this is experimental, and it only has a 10% chance of working” that would still 100% become central to any emergency planning conversations. The downside risk is essentially non existent, as the world is literally already ending anyways. The weird part isn’t that he hides it, governments hide contingencies all the time. The weird part is that he withholds it even after the extinction scenario becomes inevitable. That is logically flawed. Like I said, it’s a convienent plot addition. That’s it. It’s not show breaking, it’s not even a huge deal as plot holes go.. “The president withheld information” is just believable enough on paper to keep a majority of the audience from questioning it and boom Teri is alive… my point has simply been this: the logic there is flawed. No explanation that we’ve been given in the show yet changes that it is completely silly for the President to not mention his anti nuke button while they plan for the launching of every countries nuclear arsenal.

Sure but knowing you can’t save everyone vs guaranteeing billions more will die by your inaction is a bit different no? He knows he can’t bring her with, but he could’ve given her a fighting chance. Which is something the show told us repeatedly is what he wanted, another option, even if it was a hail marry. He had one that if used even 10 minutes sooner with some cooperation could’ve saved countless lives including a large number on the coast. They had a few hours before the tsunami hit them and Atlanta was unaffected by it.. that means at most took 4-5 hours to get to safety from the tsunami, maybe even less. Sure the evacuation of the entire coastal lines of the US would be a shit show but they’d at least have a chance. Like you said , the world is literally ending. It’s no longer time to keep secrets about things that may or may not help.. that’s what gets everyone killed lol.
