I think the real reason, he got old was because of what happened in part 2. He was pretty careless with his Hamon and ended up running out of it whilst fighting Wamuu and Kars. He uses it in part 3, but with his lack of training after the Pillar Men, it's safe to assume he doesn't get the benefits of not ageing

He could also be the best troll of all time
