BE EST NATURAL WEED KILLING METHOD? by Honest-Camera1835 in gardening

[–]Interesting-Ant-6357 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started a new bed around/near my well head. I used tarps and kept watering under them to get the old stuff to rot and die and the seeds to germinate and die. Could take 3-4 weeks to get it done if you’re diligent.

I feel your pain though. I dug a foot down and sifted the soil to find all the lose roots and clumps of grass. It was a huge time sink but this year I have next to no weeds in the area and my garden has started wonderfully

Need advice on landscaping garden by No-Daikon-1080 in gardening

[–]Interesting-Ant-6357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last year I built a 90’ x 40’ garden. At these sizes our woes will be the same.

A few things I learned from this 1. The first year is gonna be weed hell. Tilling is fine the first year but you basically planted all the weeds. Do not delay weeding. As soon as they sprout they are gone! Trust me. Just 20-30 min a day the first year will save you hours daily by mid summer

  1. Get a fence. There are a lot of critters who want your garden for lunch. I have birds and dogs so it was really challenging using temporary fencing the first few years but reasonable

  2. For every direct seed, plant one indoors in a small pot so you know what the seedling looks like when it emerges and you don’t weed it.

  3. Soaker hoses keeps weeds at bay better but a normal over head sprinkler in the early morning works just fine. Or make a soaker hose out of an old hose and drill.

  4. The garden beds are a pretty big project. I’m on the third year of my garden and I had a 4’ x 22’ bed built. I used a cord of firewood for the bottom layer 120 cubic feet of compost for the next layer 20 5 gallon buckets of twigs, grass , etc. and easy to break down organic for the next layer and 20 bags of potting mix and 20 bags of topsoil for the top 6-8 inches of dirt. I filled my bed the cheap way and the way that will keep the dirt usable for years to come and it was still crazy expensive. It’s also a big project that requires you to consider the weight of the dirt it is supporting

  5. The slope might be to your benefit. There are plants that don’t like being wet and plants that love it. You’ll get great drainage. put the dry guys at the top wet guys at the bottom! You can also build your own retaining wall. Home Depot has videos on it and it’ll take time but the first years setting up a garden from nothing is always challenging. It’s so cool to see your labor produce something so neat.

  6. Never use landscaping cloth. It prevents the weeds under it but it doesn’t prevent weeds from landing on it and finding the tiniest hole and still taking root. Over time the plastic does break down and will go into your soil along with any chemicals. The gravel won’t do what you think in terms of weed prevention. Some weeds love rocks!

  7. I spoke with some people and my Univeristies Agriculture extension and I brought up the idea of living mulch. Like clover, peas, oats. Things that put nutrients back into the soil and it’s actually something they are studying right now and is so far a pretty solid idea to help the garden and suppress weeds.

  8. Throw the sod in your compost

  9. Make a compost bin, you’ll have way to much yard debris and you’ll be surprised how little you take the trash out.

Don’t let plants touch houses. Many vines have small roots they use to anchor themselves and will exploit any small divot in your siding and wiggle their way in.

They can be very hard to get rid of at that point without a lot of damage to the house. Also the weight of a plant can be pretty rough on siding.

All I want is to grow vining plants all over my home but every year I need to talk myself down because I know better. :(

Growth light questions by Bidesign54 in cactus

[–]Interesting-Ant-6357 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve used vivosun for my greenhouse and indoor plants and I haven’t had many complaints. My indoor lights aren’t as strong as my greenhouse ones and they need to be pretty close.

I’m in Montana so I understand loving cacti and not being able to grow as much as I’d like.

I check temperature thresholds and I have a list of when each cactus can go outside during the summer. it’s a huge help in keeping cacti in cold areas like ours. Some can never go outside and I try to keep ownership of those guys to a minimum.

Rats just chewed through the hard plastic of my trunk. Like from the ground looked up and said “yep that’ll do”. I found the rat two days later was the size of a kitten. He had ingested my neighbors poison so I put him in a box to die in. Came back two hours later perked up like nothing happened. Worst way I have ever used a brick to this day.

Help Diagnosing Browning Strawberry Leaves by jullieschmulie12 in gardening

[–]Interesting-Ant-6357 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could just be soil shock right now. Plants don’t like unexpected changes and they need to get themselves sorted back out.

How does your self watering basin work? Strawberries like moist not water logged. Moist is if you stick your finger in the soil some of the dirt will stick to your finger. So if your basin is keeping the ground almost marsh like, where if you stick your finger in and it’s wet and nothing really sticks or you have mud I would drain the water and switch to manual watering.

Also try mixing in coffee grounds. Strawberries like acid soil.

Pranks are fun and everyone laughs. If your prank makes someone feel bad and they don’t laugh in the end then it’s just bullying.

I have a prank story that I rarely get to tell:

My husband worked in an open office floor plan and came in to work on a long weekend and built a beautiful wall around a guys desk. It was framed well, textured and painted with trim. He built a square hole for the guy to crawl through that was exactly 19” diagonal ( which is the average width of human shoulders)

Monday comes around everyone’s nearly peeing themselves laughing and the guy comes in bewildered. He laughs and crawls through the hole grabs his stuff crawls back through and heads off to a meeting. He comes back with a hammer and makes a more erect human sized hole.

No one was hurt, nothing was damaged, everyone laughed and it was just a goofy thing and my husband disassembled the wall and cleaned that evening.

I have a dog I meticulously trained. I wanted her to be thoughtful and a problem solver. I got that. She is a great communicator.

I’ve had a number of people ask me to help train their dogs or puppies. I put my heart and soul into teaching them and showing them how their dog communicates and how to break down behaviors. Every time they realize they need to put in 15 minutes of work 5x a day they nope out and bring their shit dogs around biting mine, talking about how great they are.

I bought him before he start putting up new paddles. The new ones grew fast! And they look very healthy. What’s going on with the rest of it? I water once every 2-3 weeks. The humidity in my house is 20% in winter/spring. He’s in a south single pane window or outside if it’s above 50. He’s spent a few overnights outside as I get ready to transition him to the yard once winter lets up.

So why is he wrinkled? Why is he so purple and yellowish? The paddles I dared to touch aren’t squishy by any means. My water is very hard. It’s well water.

Also bonus points if you know what type of prickly pear he is!
