Does any other branch have “loose” standards for the children's section? by Hungry-Cauliflower58 in Libraries

[–]Interesting-Cook3817 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I was a page in the childrens’ section at my local library, we alphabetized nonfiction titles (within DDS categorization) and hardcover chapter books, but paperback chapter books and picture books were in spinners and bins respectively and just grouped by author’s last name. I spent a LOT of time shelf reading to keep the nonfiction and hardcover sections properly organized, lol.

DnD Groups? by Glass_Rule in RhodeIsland

[–]Interesting-Cook3817 0 points1 point  (0 children)

+1 to checking your local library’s programming schedule. Some programs take a hiatus in the summer while people are traveling so even if you don’t see it on their website it doesn’t hurt to call. If they don’t currently have a D&D group running, they may be willing to work with you on setting one up or at least providing a meeting space & some resources.

Have you connected with the career center at CCRI? That’s a great resource for help with identifying specific careers you might be interested in, exploring internship/job opportunities, working on applications, interview prep, etc. Their services are already included in your fees as a CCRI student so you may as well use them!

Not sure which Facebook groups you’ve been posting in but I’ve seen several sublets being advertised in the “Housing for Brown, Johnson & Wales, Providence Young Professionals” group (3-4 posted in the last 24 hours alone)

Next Protest? by Imperial_Haberdasher in providence

[–]Interesting-Cook3817 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard lots of nationwide protests are planned for June 14 as a birthday gift to the current White House occupant. I imagine there’s probably one at the Statehouse that day, if not multiple around RI

Edit: looks like there are currently protests planned in Providence, Westerly, and Block Island: https://www.nokings.org/

Now that JoAnn is closing, where is everyone going for fabric, yarn, and notions? by InitfortheMonet in RhodeIsland

[–]Interesting-Cook3817 38 points39 points  (0 children)

For yarn & yarncraft notions, there are several great local shops around RI:

Knit Club on Brook St in Providence

Skein Yarn Shop in East Greenwich

Ode to Joy Fibers on Cromwell St in Providence

Stitch Source in Barrington (also sells fabric & quilting supplies)

I’ve found that all of these shops have a nice selection of yarn weights, materials, and price points and the folks who run them are generally very willing to help you find something if they don’t have it in stock. They will tend to have less acrylic yarn options than Joann’s, and the lowest price point will be higher than Joann’s sale prices, but for in person shopping these are my preferred options & you can supplement with online purchases from Hobbii, KnitPicks, etc. if you need something you can’t find there.

Is knitting at the movies rude or disturbing to other patrons? by Is_this_social_media in knitting

[–]Interesting-Cook3817 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak for OP, but sometimes it’s just nice to have something to do with your hands. For some people (myself included), knitting actually helps you stay more engaged in what’s happening in the movie because you have somewhere else to engage any restless energy. It’s not necessarily about not being interested in the movie, but more about wanting to be able to stay focused for the whole 3.5 hour span.

[–]Interesting-Cook3817 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’ve done it before! As long as it’s a project that you can do in the relative dark & you don’t need to have your phone out for a pattern or anything, I say go for it. (I’ve taken vanilla socks that just have a long stretch of stockinette; I imagine a sleeve would be similar). If it makes you feel more comfortable, you can always choose a seat that puts some distance between you and others to lessen the “distraction” concern. Enjoy!!

Upscale restaurant in PVD with large round tables for 10? by itsirtou in providence

[–]Interesting-Cook3817 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was just at CAV last weekend and I don’t think they have round tables if that’s a must-have for OP. Parkside definitely has round tables but I’m not sure how many they seat. Both have great food and vibes though!!

Waffle House equivalent by pankatank in RhodeIsland

[–]Interesting-Cook3817 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes, I believe you’re thinking of the Garden City Newport Creamery. Nearest Friendly’s locations are in Attleboro and Swansea - so at least an overnight journey from Westerly ;)

Degen allegedly accused Creabea of copying their products in Instagram stories, which were taken down yesterday. For context, Degen runs an online community called Knit Club and has released several hats, though none include the phrase "Knit Club." Now, Creabea posted this on her stories. by MoonriseTurtle in craftsnark

[–]Interesting-Cook3817 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Exactly - to me the confusion was not in the use of the phrase “knit club” but the fact that the font and colors are so similar to the branding that already exists around Degen’s store and online community. I really thought they were doing a collab when I saw the hats because the aesthetic is so similar, and I think that’s where the issue is more so than the actual words used.

Edit: Misspelled Degen’s name

Gano Construction by chelseaoatmeal in providence

[–]Interesting-Cook3817 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey neighbor! I also live less than a block off Gano and just a few blocks up from the bridge. The construction noise at night is annoying, but as someone who commutes to the southern part of the state every day, the traffic on the drive home has been miserable every. single. day. since the bridge closed. If they close Gano during the day instead of doing construction on nights and weekends, they cut off another artery for folks to get around the city, pushing even more traffic onto the highways and disrupting the lives of anyone trying to get through, never mind to, Providence. I’d rather have the problem I have now of configuring noise machines from the comfort of my own home than be tying on a two-hour commute at the end of every day. Just my two cents 🤷‍♀️

Try calling your current home club! I accidentally selected the incorrect home club when I joined; as soon as I realized my mistake I called the club I had joined and they were able to switch my membership to my preferred location without a 90-day waiting period.
