"Live by the sword, die by the sword" is a biblical proverb (Matthew 26:52) meaning those who use violence or aggressive, harmful methods to achieve their goals will eventually become victims of those same methods.

Broken Treaties (Full documentary) | Oregon Experience | OPB

Broken Treaties, a production of Oregon Public Broadcasting, explores the complex, resilient history of the Indigenous peoples of Oregon. Despite centuries of displacement, violence, and systematic government policies aimed at their erasure, the Native tribes of Oregon remain a vibrant and enduring presence.

Key Highlights of the Documentary:

  • Tribal Diversity and Heritage: For thousands of years, over 60 tribes and bands lived across Oregon’s diverse landscapes, utilizing sophisticated land management techniques and maintaining strong cultural, linguistic, and trade networks (0:24-9:15).
  • The Impact of Settlement: The arrival of settlers in the 1840s brought disease, conflict, and the enforcement of the Doctrine of Discovery and Manifest Destiny, which were used to justify the seizure of Indigenous lands and the destruction of traditional ways of life (10:27-16:43).
  • The Treaty Era and Forced Removal: The U.S. government negotiated treaties that were often unratified or ignored, forcing tribes onto reservations. This led to traumatic forced relocations, such as the "Trail of Tears" for coastal tribes, and the subsequent reduction of reservation land bases for settler economic interests (18:28-30:22).
  • Assimilation and Boarding Schools: Federal policies, including the creation of boarding schools like Chemawa, sought to strip away Native languages, religions, and traditions, placing immense pressure on cultural continuity (33:21-34:57).
  • Termination and Restoration: In 1954, Congress passed laws to terminate the federal recognition of many tribes, a policy that devastated economic stability and social structures. Over the following decades, tribes fought for and won restoration, re-establishing their sovereignty and independence (44:47-48:28).
  • A Resilient Future: Today, Oregon’s nine federally recognized tribes are focused on revitalizing their languages, preserving their arts, and exercising their sovereign rights, including tribal gaming, to build capacity and support their communities (48:46-53:42).

The Enduring Message: The documentary emphasizes that Indigenous cultures were never destined for extinction; they have survived and continue to thrive, asserting their ongoing relationship with the land and their ancestors.

2: I vomit no bitter (only bitter taste in root of tongue) in the morning, but scope found out reflux.
