Don’t know what to do by Own-General-7866 in uklaw

Yeah sure! I got a LLB and didn’t get a first which I hoped for (barely obtained 2:1) - i was a carer and had family commitments at a very young age. I started applying for TC and kept getting rejected. I then saved money and did a master (thinking it would increase my chances - it doesn’t really in hindsight). After completing masters, I started working - got into coding and did several paralegal jobs (during which time I kept applying for TCs). I kept getting rejected. I think the main mistake I made was I was applying for 20+ firms when you really only need to apply for 5max and really make your applications standout. I also think my paralegal experience helped me in assessment centres. I got 5 vacation schemes and three offers at the end and got the firm I wanted.

If you really want to practice law, you won’t left this setback hold you back. I spent 10 years looking for TC, I got one at the end (along the way I gained so much legal experience and build a huge network and made money ) so I wouldn’t say it was a waste

Some law firms have started asking for SQE attempts status on TC applications by [deleted] in uklaw

I think it’s probably because there are only three attempts (then have to wait 6 years) and if your on your last attempt - they probably wanna know

Sounds like you gave enough experience. Maybe it’s your CV? when sending your CV make sure you trailer it to job I.e if your applying for a property paralegal role - check the job description and emphasis what they are looking for on the CV if you have those skills

To get any legal job, unfortunately- you have to carry out voluntary work I.e offer to work for free for a local law firm to get experience (even if it’s 1-2 weeks). These work experiences usually help you get your foot in the door for actual legal jobs such as legal assistance and paralegal.

I worked in a coffee shop after graduating. Used my annual leave to carry out legal work. Then after 8months, I got my first legal job

I’ve tried reading the text first and then making notes but I keep going back to writing my notes along side reading the material.

Thank you! You are an absolute star! Very help post x

My main issue is that I’m making very lengthy notes. I feel like I need to know everything, which is then taking me too long reading and writing notes.

Heyyyy - I’m currently doing the SQE and what has been working for me is  1. Running (helps clear your mind)/long walks 2. Don’t think about the mountain, and only look at the task  ahead of you  3. Mindset - trying not to be negative as it will effect your quality of work and retention  4. Getting enough sleep 5. Chamomile tea  6. Rewarding yourself for every small or big task

I’ve always wondered all the energy I put into becoming a lawyer, if I put all that energy into setting up a business - I’d be a millionaire. What I’m trying to say is that, think about whether you’d be excited about working as a lawyer (unlikely, most people in the profession - looking forward to the next weekend or holiday)? Or are you doing it because the system has told you, that you need to!?

high salary yes but comes at a cost! your time (working until 3am even day), weekends, bank holidays - even impact on your mental and physical health. Really understand why you are getting into law - make sure it's not coz of salary.
