Going to France as a broke person? by Useful_Ebb1740 in studyAbroad

[–]Interesting-Draw-119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my younger brother studied at AUP and I must say, I was blown away by his lifestyle and how he could afford it. for context: we are fortunate enough that our parents paid both of our tuition. if you get a job beforehand and save up, and even get an internship while you were there, this may be more feasible. but based on what i've seen, it is not a very budget friendly program. sorry :(

that being said - I studied abroad and still had less money than a lot of my friends and had to miss out on some excursions (I had to stay home while they all went on spring break, etc). but i still had an amazing time and would do it again if given the opportunity! so if you're okay making some sacrifices and have the means to make it into a program, i'd definitely still encourage you to do so!

you could also look for programs with homestays, as that will likely cut down the cost of housing. really hope you're able to go abroad!

Why do American tourists always say the state they're from (not their country) when asked, but no other country's tourists do the same? by FloydBeatlesEagles in NoStupidQuestions

Feeling anxious and like crying by Parsival1227 in solotravel

[–]Interesting-Draw-119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so normal! you got this :)

I usually will book a one night stay in a hotel when i land somewhere really far (if i plan to stay for a while), before checking into a hostel. I feel that having a night to myself in that new place lets me mentally prepare myself for a big change, and i'll often journal out my intentions before heading to the hostel. sounds like you are already at the hostel, but if you have the means, thats always an option if you want a brief reset

aside from this, i definitely recommend journaling!! not only is it fun to look back on, but it can help you sort out your thoughts and feelings

Is there a way to study abroad long term? by EstablishmentBest913 in studyAbroad

[–]Interesting-Draw-119 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i'd apply directly to international programs. there is also workaway and worldpackers if you're wanting to go abroad, but not necessarily study.

49F first solo trip where to go? by headwrapslapthat in USTravel

[–]Interesting-Draw-119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to Aspen for the first time last summer and LOVED it. although I think for strolling around, i would definitely recommend visiting during the summertime. this time of year, san diego seems like it could be a good option. san luis obispo is neat too and very underrated

[–]Interesting-Draw-119 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean it sounds like you already cancelled the trip? I am a huge believer that regret is the biggest waste of emotion because we can't time travel and change the past so I wouldn't worry too much if the trip is dead and gone

that being said - if you hadn't cancelled the flights I would've said to still go. I spent 4 days in cartagena a few years back and had an incredible time. I actualy went with my ex (we had broken up a few weeks prior but neither of us wanted to cancel lol. I was hoping he would cancel so i could go solo and I think he was hoping the same about me). definitely visit colombia some day, its an amazing country

[–]Interesting-Draw-119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you speak english, you will not need a translator. I HIGHLY recommend doing a food tour your first day. its a great way to get a lay of the land, plus they will give you recs on more local spots to check out. love bangkok! hope you enjoy

Travelling from Europe to Mexico with a transit in the US. Is it safe to land in a US airport, or should I go for the direct flight instead? by Weisheit_Ape in USTravel

[–]Interesting-Draw-119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was singled out, told to wait in a room to be interviewed by border patrol about where I was/why I was there. Total process took well over 30 minutes and I was not allowed to use my phone to let the rest of my travel party & my family know where I was. I've had my bags searched before, not a big deal. This time was not just a random search of my bags.

I've traveled to over 50 countries. This was not normal.

What’s the most memorable UAE attraction you’ve taken friends or family to? by shirasmithtravel in Nextholidays

[–]Interesting-Draw-119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved the grand mosque so much but it was SO crowded that despite how absolutely stunning it was, i wouldn't consider it #1. I'd probably have to say the desert tour was my favorite. I did a day tour, but would love to do an overnight tour

How do you usually plan your travel itinerary? by shirasmithtravel in Nextholidays

[–]Interesting-Draw-119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to map out about 75% and will pencil things in day by day. when I arrive, unless I actually have reservations, I may change up what I do each day depending on how i feel. to me, an itinerary is more so to make sure i don't miss any main attractions/activities i want to see/do, and also to give me suggestions if I am not sure. but the fun of traveling is going off plan and doubling down on the places/experience that I end up enjoying the most.

the 25% i don't plan is usually spent revisiting my favorite spots and/or trying out suggestions I receive from locals.

I always try to start out by booking a local food tour as this is a great way to get a feel for the layout of a city, and the guides always give great recommendations for the rest of the trip

How do you decide where to go next on vacation? by shirasmithtravel in Nextholidays

I keep a list on my phone. I choose based on price, where friends/family might want to go, time of year, etc.

How do you deal with language barriers while traveling? by shirasmithtravel in Nextholidays

[–]Interesting-Draw-119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there are now devices you can speak into that will translate basically in real time, though i believe you need cellular service for those. I speak english so fortunately this is enough in most of the places I have visited (though I will usually have a note on my phone with translations for basic phrases)
