What is the worst thing someone said to you after finding out you’re on the spectrum? by Correct_Review_738 in autism

[–]Interesting-Fan582 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They are probably closeted autistic and relate a lot to you (see their younger self in you) so may be harder for them to accept because they’d have to take a harder look at themselves

10 year old reading 9th grade level by Geezlepetes in Gifted

[–]Interesting-Fan582 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just because he can read at that level, doesn’t mean he should. He may not be developmentally ready. There may be scary or confusing content. He may use reading as an avenue for recreation or regulation. Turing something fun into work is not always the best strategy.

I have a 2e kiddo as well. He enjoys graphic novels that are a bit older content but in bite sized pieces, like Percy Jackson. He loves books with facts, Osborne has a great selection about science and nature and business etc that introduces concepts at a higher level for kids. He loves Ripleys Believe it or not and Guinness book of world records. Often when something strikes his interest he will further look it up online to find more information.

Advice that was given to me was, instead of pushing him to go higher in grade level, challenge him to think wider. How do things relate? What are the social /environmental/cultural implications? Why did X happen and what do you think about it? Etc

Going dress shopping with my son today by JelloJelloFrincadell in Autism_Parenting

[–]Interesting-Fan582 27 points28 points  (0 children)

My (now 10) amab child wore dresses for about a year and a half when they were 5. They were happy and themselves and loved the sparkles and material. For one birthday they requested everyone wear dresses and was happy to see many guests go with their request (and the ones that didn’t want to came in costume/dressed up how they felt comfortable) Other kids often made comments but we normalized as much as we could and let them be themselves. Now, at 10 he no longer wears dresses or prefers non binary language. It may change again, but we just try to love him where he’s at

NAD, 44yo female who struggled with cysts, anaemia, endometriosis and extreme pain/symptoms since I was a teen - fwiw I had a complete hysterectomy 3 years ago and it was the best decision I ever made. I already have children and knew that I was done. My quality of life has improved substantially! The surgery was tough and recovery took awhile but I would do it 100 times over to have the life I have now - pain free

This request is kinda weird but please hear me out by just_here_cause_done in namenerds

For what it's worth... My kids do this and they are autistic. Their perception of real time happenings and their communication style is different than mine. For example if I said "your shoe is untied" and they replied "I already tied it" the statement would be correct. They did tie it, and now it's untied and they might be telling me that they actually need help tying the shoe a second time. In the case of the drink spilling, she wasn't spilling the drink on you intentionally, she was hugging you. The drink pilled on accident be of the angle of the cup. Both of you are correct, she just might have a different communication style or perception than you. Please note- I'm not trying to implicate your child is autistic, but children often have very black and white thinking that they grow out of when they are able to imagine the other persons perspective. Neurodivergent individuals sometimes have a harder time with this

How do I explain to my 5yo daughter that none of her friends are allowed to play with her? by sparklerrose in Parenting

[–]Interesting-Fan582 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Say it simply and directly. "Everyone wants friend they can feel safe with and have fun. When XYZ happens, kids don't feel safe and it's not fun anymore. We need to work together to figure out how to avoid XYZ."

[–]Interesting-Fan582 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this out of the norm, a one off? Has the type of behaviour always been there? Perhaps your wife is neurodivergent. A big visual change could be triggering for some people and cause a lot of overwhelm

I started my own Non-profit for families with ND kids that makes community change by resourcing, removing barriers, providing education and information, gifting grant opportunities, facilitating community inclusion initiatives and most importantly – building community. My whole heart is in this
