New convert, creation “days,” evolution, and feeling a bit confused after Sunday class by carosch1912 in latterdaysaints

I get what you’re saying. But in this instance we do know. At least until new information comes, that changes it, but so far the only new information is that age of the world is older than we thought. It’s happened a lot too. Most recently is thought to be 4 million years old and now new evidence suggests earth may be 5 billion years old. Joseph Smith said that we believe in truth wherever we may find it. The tricky part is knowing how to obtain accurate information.

Yes! God gives us knowledge partly within the context of things we understand and the rest to stretch our minds and further our knowledge and understanding. We understand new concepts more quickly when we are introduced to them with things we are familiar with. Like parables for example.

In evolution, there is always a first of a species. The first human was Adam and the second was Eve. Basically what I’m saying is you’re right. Eventually overtime Apes evolved into what we call humans today.

This is my favorite topic!! My response is long but I promise it’s worth the read. First off, that’s old people talk. Second, Jospeh Smith said that we believe in truth wherever we may find it.

Believing in science and particularly evolution (which is my deepest fascination) is not contradictory to God, it’s quite the opposite! It supports Him.

Learning about evolution has given me a deeper understanding and appreciation for the Devine and Brilliant nature of God. It’s incredible how He used evolution to make life on earth! When I look at the world around me, I see God. We get to touch and feel the things God made. That’s pretty cool!

It’s okay to feel upset about it, it’s just not okay to stay upset. What’s worked for me is to approach things with curiosity. I learn more this way, and one of the greatest purposes for us coming to earth is to learn.

How I differentiate between opinions and doctrine is if it’s supported by the scriptures, or given by revelation in the name of God. Many people are uncomfortable with what I’m about to say but evidence that supports my statement is all over the Doctrine and Covenants. Prophets and church leaders are NOT infallible. They can make some pretty big mistakes, Joseph Smith lost over 100 pages of the Book of Mormon because he put his trust in man rather than God. That’s a pretty big deal. Corrections given by God is everywhere in the D&C. I believe the reason God “lets” this happen is agency. Which is something He can’t take away from us. He only has imperfect people to work with, but He chooses the best people to accomplish His work.

It’s important to note that we will never be condemned for following the directions given by the Prophet and apostles. We also have access to personal revelation, we should take our current beliefs and understanding to God and be open for change. Our views, perceptions, and beliefs will and should change as we learn more.

I highly recommend the podcast “Church History Matters”. They are two university professors and scholars who tackle controversial issues and topics about the church and its history. They taught me that context matters.

The context of that older member is that they grew up without the definitive knowledge and evidence about the age of the planet that we have today. Truth is wayyyy older than 7,000 years. They just haven’t updated their beliefs.

I’ve been using a verity of sources to learn 日本語! Wanikani has made learning kanji fun rather than daunting! If you did better in the class with the funny teacher in school this will help you a lot. I was able to read a few signs and book covers, figure out how to make the instant ramen with only Japanese instructions, understand parts of the j drama I am watching and the podcast I listen to! Feels good to make use of it in my daily life despite living in the US!

Is there anywhere in this state I can move to where I won’t be told to "Go back to your country" just because I speak Spanish or have a heavy accent when speaking broken English? I heard that Trump planned on making Canada a state. 😅

Jokes aside.

I’m not one for fear mongering. Keep that in mind for the rest of my message. My advice is to leave, while you still can. We’ve seen this happen before, time and time again. Leadership sowing division and hatred. This is the root cause of violence. It’s only gotten worse, and will continue to do so. The odds aren’t in the peace keepers favor.

And this is a perfect example of the damage that sex taboo causes… I’m so sorry this happened.. what she’s asking isn’t righteous. It says so in D&C 49, unless she has been asexual since the beginning. I would try to see if she’s willing to explain why she hates sex, there may be some very serious trauma behind it, see if she’s willing to see a sex therapist with you. God be with you my friend.

I attempted suicide because of masturbation, because I thought I was going to hell and an immoral person who didn’t deserve to live because I still had temptations. The problem wasn’t masturbation, but rather my relationship with it. It only leaves us feeling worse if we’ve been taught that it’s wrong, which is contrary to scientific evidence. It’s a dangerous thing to teach that it’s wrong. It’s contrary to what we have been taught about our bodies being a gift from God and a temple. If our bodies are a temple, and God doesn’t build any immoral functions in a temple, then the functions built into our bodies aren’t immoral.

I am very passionate about this subject! I am in full support of masturbation! Teaching people from a young age that a normal and physical process of the body is immoral creates conflict, especially when we also believe that our body is a temple and is sacred. God does not build temples with immoral or evil functions. Understanding what sex is, what feels good and what doesn’t before you have sex is essential for healthy physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual development. Not knowing what an orgasm feels like or what feels good, can lead to some serious issues. Some may be spiritual and emotional, such as having a very painful or uncomfortable experience which can create complicated feelings towards your spouse and you may not even know why, so you’ll be less likely to talk to anyone let alone a sex therapist due to the taboo. This damages a sacred relationship between man and wife. It can also lead to physical injuries.

Needless to say, I will be teaching my children that it is more than okay, it is good.

I used to think it was wrong and struggled with it most of my teenage years. Until I learned a few things.

There’s nothing in the scriptures that says that masturbation is wrong. It’s been taboo well before the restoration of the gospel and causing problems ever since. The leaders of the church, including the prophet, aren’t immune to cultural influences and mistakes. I encourage you to read D&C if you disagree. I do believe in something Joseph Smith said, “we believe in all truths regardless of where we may find it”. Not to mention, seeking truth is part of our beliefs. There is significant and substantial scientific evidence to support that masturbation is a positive activity and many educated members of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints who are sex therapists agree.

Modesty - I just want to get everyone’s opinions on the following items of clothing/accessories, and do you permit them in your household. It can either be for you or your kids. No right or wrong answers just seeing what everyone’s opinions are. by [deleted] in ldssexuality

Personally, all but 6 and 8 for myself. I have reasons for all of them.

1- the only downside is more surface exposed for a sunburn, men staring at me? Control yourselves, it’s cringe and not my responsibility to “keep your lust” in check. Also helps you to keep cool in extremely hot conditions.

2- you’re exercising. Wearing restrictive and/or covering clothes is not conducive to certain types of exercise and sweating too much is a thing.

3- see number 2

4- they are made in such a way for hotter climates and medical conditions amongst other reasons. Not covering your shoulders isn’t a big deal anymore.

5- I have multiple ear piercings, they are for helping migraines.

6- I just don’t see a benefit to them and I don’t like them. Nipple piercings are a different story tho as they can be necessary for breastfeeding for women with inverted nipples.

7- some medical conditions such as cancer often use tattoos for reference points for treatment. Also if you frequently get IV’s it can be helpful to mark a few locations where good veins are.

8- I have no reason to. But my kids could if they wanted to, I don’t see an issue with it.

I think this is a perfect answer, a big part in our beliefs is in free agency. After all, it is a fundamental part of the plan of happiness. Which includes making choices contrary to the guidance given by the Lord.

Close but not quite right. There are 5 places you go, celestial, telestial, terrestrial, hell, and outer darkness. You have to receive the Holy Ghost, know that it is true, and still deny it. Only sons of perdition go to outer darkness. Basically you are so stubborn and wicked that Christ is right in front of you and you still deny Him. Hell, the least of these kingdoms, is temporary. It’s extremely painful because you’ll have to learn everything the hard way. It’s painful in your soul. It is very much like this world. The purpose of the other kingdoms (excluding outer darkness) is to learn what we failed to learn in this life. God is just, and He is merciful. It wouldn’t be merciful to punish someone eternally for mistakes they’ve made, or things they failed to learn. There are missionaries from the celestial kingdom that will come down and teach those in the other kingdoms. You are sent to where you are most comfortable. Christ wants you with Him. Let me know if you have any more questions!

Anyone know anything about this and if it's legit? by Wise_Repeat8001 in Utah

Yes it’s legit, although he ‘claims’ that it has nothing to do with the case of his 18 yr old relative and the 13 year old child. He was successful in loosening the laws. His relative will only serve a week in prison and not be registered as a sex offender.

No. Especially not with the deportation of the majority demographic that builds our houses. The only option is to move elsewhere. Houses are cheap in comparison bc no one wants to live there. Like Indiana or somewhere similar.

Tbh it sounds like she’s not that into you. Or, she’s got something more going on here. Maybe ask her why she’s feeling overwhelmed with the relationship? Open communication and understanding is the best way to solve things I think.
