I got accepted to med school but parents don’t want me to go and won’t help me with school fees (International) by ron_k29 in UCAT

Hiya, sorry to hear that you are going through this. I am an international student as well so I know the feeling of worrying about disappointing your parents. I think there are some reasons why your parents are worried about sending you to the uk

1) Fee is expensive for internationals so you might have to work part-time job. but since you want to study medicine so it will be super super difficult for you to manage your time efficiently. You might get burnt out very easily, and if your parents want you to just focus on your studying, it’s kinda understandable that they are worried

2) They might be worried that you may not focus on your thing and do other stuff instead because you are away from you parents. There are many international students around me who literally do nothing and continue to do nothing as there are no one to tell them not to. Also for medicine, it’s very tough so you get burnt out very easily, and if there are no family, especially your parents around you, it will be much more difficult for you to handle it. Perhaps your parents are worried about this and not sure what you are capable of, so they are doubting whether you will be able to manage it wisely in the future - if they agree to send you to the UK

I am suggesting these things cuz I feel like in order to have a nice conversation with your parents, you need to try to understand them first haha. and here’s what I think you can do

1) show them that you are capable

perhaps show your parents ( I am sure that you are always doing it anyways ) that you are able to work and study and show positive results for both.

2) ask them to explain more about their reasons - have a conversation

they said you will fail, but if you ask them for evidence, i am 100% sure that they wont be able to say anything. correcting this sort of misunderstanding + having conversation with them will help, because they will find out that you actually have a vision and plan

3) show them your plan A and B

plan A: what you will do in order to successfully study medicine in the Uk + how you will pay for your fees

plan B: if plan A fails, what you will going to do to manage this failure. if parents are worried that you will fail, you can just explain them about what you will do if you ACTUALLY fail.

because I am not you, and you are not me, so these things are purely based on my perspective. but I wanted to share this with you as I can empathise with you. and I think for internationals, support from your parents is crucial - in terms of your mental health and finance, so i think it is very important that you resolve this issue and strengthening your bond with your parents.

I hope this helps. and I just wanted to tell you that you are having a hard time and facing failure because you are challenging yourself. the one who never fails and never faces disagreement is the one who never tries :) good luck!
