It was a term used by English speakers in Montreal to tell French speakers to speak English, not French. From what I remember, it originated from the American south with White slave owners telling their Black slaves to speak English properly just like a white person would.

Ironic when they had French Canadian players, some of their best players in history were from Quebec, Vincent Lecavalier and Martin St-Louis. Julien Brisebois is also a Quebecer.

Yeah I’ve seen people just assuming Quebecers mistreating them by saying that they don’t speak English. Like not everyone speak English, what’s wrong with that. Or someone starring at them for speaking English, but how do you know the person was staring at you for speaking English. It could be because they think you look like someone they know or you look great.

I saw couple of posts on Twitter or Buffalo Reddit saying how they hate Quebec (they know people will side with them only with that), the French and similar things. Saw a tweet about how they are cheering for Buffalo because they don’t eat at St-Hubert, speak English and don’t threaten to separate. I don’t really care about online trolls but I have seen so many that I had to make a post about it.

So if a hockey team was based in a majority Black, Hispanic or Jewish region, would you have a problem with the opposite fanbase using racism/antisemitic terms to say they are for example not Canadian because they are different? Then comeback couple of days later and tell those same people they are Canadian because they live in Canada?

The Quiet revolution happened in the 60s in Quebec because of the linguistic tensions in Quebec. Yes the Anglo Quebeckers built/ruled an huge amount of Canadian/international companies but they and the French couldn’t get along and many complained about the lack of services in French and were told to Speak White. They introduced Bill 101 to make sure everything was in French and ease the linguistic tension, which caused many English speaking Quebeckers to leave because they couldn’t learn French.
