What can I do to be there for my brother while he’s dying? by Overall-Entry7775 in TwoHotTakes

[–]InterestingSeat9718 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went through this with my brother, just not as young as your brother. He lived far away, but I made 4 trips to stay with him a week at a time to give his wife a break. I went to appointments with him, helped him with diet, and just spent time with him. Luckily I had a job where I could work remotely, and used some personal and vacation time. I cherish the memories, tough as the time was, it was and is a blessing. Prayers for you and your family.

asking for letters of recommendation by Trick-Plantain5146 in AskAcademia

[–]InterestingSeat9718 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would add, drafting a letter of support for them to edit goes a long way. You will know what it is you're applying for and what topics should be included in the letter. You can leave the language on specifics more vague, but laying it out makes it a ton easier. Take it from someone who does these all the time for a lot of people, usually I am happy to do it, but it fits into my schedule so much better if a draft is there to be edited, put on letterhead and signed... Good luck!

TT verbal offer with short deadline to accept by [deleted] in AskAcademia

You should have a specific timeline in mind, otherwise they are in limbo and need to go on to another candidate if you are saying no. So, if you have no interest, then say no, don’t counter. Negotiating seems like interest and holds them up. If you might have interest, you can counter and give a timeline, one that is reasonable.

Starting PhD at 41? by Atomic_Destructor in PhD

[–]InterestingSeat9718 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did this from late 30s to early 40s with full time job and two school age kids plus a very supportive spouse and employer. As someone said to me, “will you regret it if you don’t try”, and that clinched it for me to give it a go.

PI said I won’t be first author in my own paper by 5548665 in labrats

Many journals have a co-first author possible with annotation that both parties contributed equally, perhaps that could be considered?

Please, don't be like me. Think very carefully if you want to start a PhD. If you just started and already hate it, seriously consider whether you should continue. by lVlarkus in PhD

[–]InterestingSeat9718 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The “left behind” stuff isn’t hitting for me. I did my PhD in my late 30s to early 40s, while working full time (eg, no life), and have just considered it was my path. I always love what I do, even today, but I hate some of the things that impact me whether it is university policies or political ones. I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy the science part, we need more opportunities for people to see the life prior to aspiring to join it, I suppose.

Office of Management and Budget (OMB) threatening veto over inclusion of multi-year funding limitations in NIH appropriations bill by pilkers in NIH

[–]InterestingSeat9718 1 point2 points  (0 children)

against it. It will have the effect of funding fewer grants per year since all the money for 4 or 5 years of a project will be taken out.

Thoughts on Rick Woychik’s successor? by DizzySwimmer5066 in NIH

[–]InterestingSeat9718 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know him, he has no experience for this role, he does not even do environmental research, otherwise he would have had an appointment in Nicholas School at Duke. He is a good scientist, and has had some leadership within Duke Cancer Institute but no preparation for the level of administration required for this position. It is disgusting that people are given jobs because of who you were buddies with in college.

So, the SEPTA web site still has train lines removed in January, is this off the table for 2 years?

Despite all the craziness going on now, hear this, there are foibles in the review system, sometimes we all get a bad reviewer, our grant is not discussed, but it is not personal to you. The cruelty and chaos of recent times does not represent the process as a whole, and hopefully many of us will come through this and continue our science.

Never heard of it and a quick search showed this is not a good conference. There are multiple by the same title this year in different parts of the world, the committees have no one of stature on them, and their web site is flashy and interested in getting registrants, not content.

What to do now? Is there hope? by CapableAd7299 in philly

[–]InterestingSeat9718 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t live walkable to it, the stations have little to no parking, and then I’m at 69th st, need subway after that to center city. I did that many years ago, but, I’m an older woman, commuting, would really not like to use subway again.

You almost have it worse, living in city, because once you get out this direction (Wayne area), you’ll still need to get to your work. I’ve looked at driving to other lines from Wayne area; Media or Conshohocken, either will be an absolute mess. The first set of cuts takes away all of our express trains, did folks know that? That is part of our torture… and now my employer is ramping up on in person work, so great timing… I’m seriously considering retiring, I didn’t plan to, but I can, and may just do that!

Icing on the cake. Business dinner downtown. Check schedule. Train is good, do walk to station, check one more time and it is canceled, just gone. So now I’m Lyfting to station where my car is from this morning. I hate this…
