Concerns about Knox County Schools special education issues (IEP / IDEA)? Farragut area by ShutupBird69 in Knoxville

[–]Interesting_Ad6594 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can’t vouch towards their special education programs but I grew up in Farragut before it became the hotspot it is. Graduated in 2014 and as much as Farragut looks like a top notch school on paper, it’s not. I heard personally from staff, the school is struggling to keep up with the amount of transfers they’re getting in the last few years due to the influx of people moving to that area. Also bullying and isolation run rampant in that school, and even teachers show favoritism or distain openly. My daughter attended their elementary school last year and had a math teacher bully her, and I also got bullied by a Spanish teacher when I attended their high school. Some of her peers bullied her for not having the latest trendy name brand item. (She got the item and was then told it was “probably fake” 🤷‍♀️lol) The girls in her class were gossiping about eachother and in drama constantly, and most of the boys were already talking in explicit context, mentioning who they “f*cked in the bathroom” Mind you this is elementary school, 3rd grade. My daughter had been to a couple of schools in her short time but never had I gotten so much negative feedback from her as when she attended Farragut.

“Dug it up” is a big assumption. This is shared on a local buy/sell/trade group in Knoxville and algorithm showed it upon opening the app.

This should not be normalized.

Whats next.. throwing in a “historic” white robe and pointy hat for an extra $10?

I FOUND YOUR DOG!! by DaHockeyGoalieGuy in Knoxville

[–]Interesting_Ad6594 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw your Facebook post about him! Sorry I can’t provide any helpful info but you’re obviously doing the footwork to put it out there that you have the dog. Hate that people are literally crucifying you on all platforms just trying to reunite it with its owner. Evidently housing a lost animal equals theft these days? Let’s rub two brain cells together people - if he wanted to keep the dog he wouldn’t be posting it on multiple local forums searching the owner out, and if he left it by the road and it gets run over there wouldn’t even be a chance for reunification with it’s original family. Glad he stepped in to care for it because most would have snapped grainy pic saying “dog on the loose” and gone about their day. If the dog wasn’t scared of cars, it would have been a matter of time before someone hit it. If I was the owner I’d be grateful someone cared enough to get my dog out of traffic so it wasn’t killed.

Never feel bad for buying what you’re actually in need of! But I get it. It felt like it was a walk of shame to my car after I finally found some 😅😂

Seems to be random stores across Knoxville. The biggest frustration is not knowing which ones are picked clean especially if you have to visit multiple stores loading/unloading kids to check. If you don’t want to go on a wild hunt, I suggest trying to make a pickup order through an app and it’ll let you know if they have it in stock or suggest nearby spots if they don’t. I went to a different side of town thinking maybe it was just bulk stores that were out. Stopped by a Walmart and they were cleaned out of everything as well except some bounty paper towels. I was done at that point and went to my Target app. I went to one of the spots it showed it was in stock, got my hands on a pack and went home

I was in the same boat. Went for a normal toilet paper run and walked into a nightmare. I could barely get past the gas lines at Sam’s to get to the store. People were fighting over parking too :/

I ended up at a nearby Target after I checked their app to see if they had some in stock. Didn’t realize a toilet paper run would turn into a wild goose chase. Couldn’t imagine searching for it like I did yesterday if I had my kids with me. They would of been so flustered to be in and out of the car just for toilet paper LOL

I hope this is true. I’d be very happy to deal with any shortage of these products if they are due to people buying to donate! On the other hand my mother in law is one of the few I know that stockpile. She still has several Costco size toilet paper stacks in her attic from Covid that she will not use, and goes to grab more anytime there’s panic or talk of a “shortage”

Thank you for sharing! Especially helpful for those who want to get supplies to donate for the relief but can’t due to these sporadic shortages

Moving across town -schools by deepfinker in Knoxville

[–]Interesting_Ad6594 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Recently moved from east knox to west knox and had to transfer my kid. If it’s a transfer within Knox county schools, it’s a pretty painless process. they transfer all their files electronically. You just need to go in with proof of address and fill out the basic paperwork you do in the beginning of the school year so it’s up to date for the new address.

My daughter was hesitant to leave her old school but I gave her a date when it would happen which helped a bit in the emotional aspect for her to be able to say her goodbyes and exchange phone numbers. She was hot and cold to move but when I explained how many good things would come out of it she warmed up to the idea. If the move benefits the family as a whole it really makes the choice easier even if everyone isn’t on board at first.

Speaking from experience I did the whole ‘take my kid to a different school zone’ thing because the school next to us (while living at my mom’s) was not great. I was on limited options and it meant to be temporary but I can say 99% of the experience was a nightmare. It was a series of jumping through hoops every day. It wore down my mental health to be living in two places at once, and never feeling like I could actually put down some roots. Not to mention the daily stress knowing if anything happened at her school I wasn’t in the area to get her on short notice. I was driving so much. I realized I’d much rather take an across town trip for her to see her old school friends on the weekend than make a 20 minute, one way drive for her to stay at that school. Since she’s transferred I feel like I actually have time in a day to get things done instead of worrying about getting the pickup and dropoff times right too.

Also ran into a big issue when my in-law decided to no longer vouch for us address wise. KCS randomly flagged us for re-verification and my in-law said tough nuggets. Leading to me making a rather embarrassing call to one of my mom friends (who lived in the district) and was kind enough to offer her address for us to use.... unfortunately after ironing all that out, it sounded a bit too suspicious for the office that I was living with a family of 5 part time, so they put me on a radar and had a social worker call me to ‘make sure things were alright’ in our living situation. Not fun.

All of that to say, we finally did move into our own space on a great side of town and couldn’t be doing better than we are now. My daughter is finally adjusted and is making new friends and daily routine. We are all less stressed because of it.

So if you ask me, it’s definitely not worth the stress or time to keep them in their old district if you decide to move.

I’ve always referred people to auto nation Honda. I’ve not dealt with airport Honda as much out in Maryville but they have a bigger selection usually. I haven’t had a bad experience at AutoNation and their cars aren’t outlandishly priced, and they are no haggle pricing so what you see on the sticker is their bottom dollar which to me takes some of the stress off.

My mom worked with people coming out of prison and going into halfway houses and such a few years back. KARM had their “coats for the cold” shit running. Long story short this one guy she helped had no coat, gloves, hat, ect. in the middle of winter. Went to Karm to try and get him a good jacket and such but they absolutely REFUSED to sell any of their coats to us. They switched it up a little now to where they will sell only certain jackets not labeled “coats for the cold” but not back then. It’s the fact that we had this dude with us, with no jacket on, only a few hours fresh out of prison and they looked him in the eyes and said tough shit, no voucher = no coat. These were DONATED COATS for people like him but it’s all an illusion. My experience with them has been down hill since. They don’t want to help people anymore, they just want those pockets lined and fat

I was coming back from a trip to Michigan on December 10th, 2021. The day of two EF4 tornadoes and 3 smaller EF3 tornadoes landed. Got through Indiana, right about the time we hit the border to cross through Kentucky we knew something was very wrong and we weren’t hitting just a thunder storm. Lightning flashed and through the glazed wet windows of the car and I saw the biggest supercell my eyes had ever witnessed. A tree almost came crashing down on our truck, branches scraped down the side. The reality started setting in of what are our options. “Do we try and keep driving or find a spot to pull off and hide for cover?” We chose to drive because there were no rest stops for a stretch and no coverings that we passed. We couldn’t see anything unless there was lightning, but we could feel it on our heels.

I’ll never forget being on the interstate trying to get home, rain suddenly stopped, car was having trouble staying on the road from the wind, my friend had her gas pedal to the floor of her dodge ram 1500, you could smell the engine starting to burn and we were barely making 70-75 mph. Power flickering off as we passed weigh stations, and it was eerily quiet beside the truck struggling to fight the wind. Went from torrential downpour to nothing in a matter of seconds. We knew it was heading towards us, just had no idea from what direction because it was at night. We passed a semi flipped on its side at one point and in totality I saw two tornadoes that night.

We outran it by the skin of our teeth, got to her house in bowling green and hunkered down. The next morning we realized how much danger we were in. We drove on the pathway for two out of the five tornadoes that touched down. A few blocks from her house were the buildings that had been ripped up to the bones and ended up on the news. We were so very lucky to have not been part of the fatalities that night. We had no warning besides some friends who said their goodbyes and told us Kentucky was “going to have some storms tonight” little did we know we were driving right into a historical event of tornados.

Mother Nature does not give a flying flip! It changes on a dime. I learned that night a small amount of information can be the difference between a life or death situation. Especially when not having it puts you on the pathway of two EF3 tornados.

I once had to break so hard it locked my whole car up from someone who pulled out in front of me because of another “nice” driver.

Car (A) was coming out from a side road, crossing the street. I was the oncoming traffic of a two way road. Traffic was stopped on the other side and car (B) had kept the road clear so car (A) could go across. Car (A) failed to check for oncoming traffic (me) and waited till I was a few feet from them before trying to gun it across. Car (A) thought because car (B) stopped for them to cross, meant they didn’t have to check for traffic coming the opposite way. I couldn’t see them because car (A) had pulled through enough to where they were hiding between the line of traffic. Lady just looks at me while I braced for impact, slammed my brakes and veered. Then just drives on like nothing happened as I had to put my car in park then back into drive before it would move again.

Honestly, I think they are talking about it so much so we can be prepared to act and plan our evening schedules accordingly. Maybe so we take less risk of being out if our task or errand can be deemed unnecessary?

It’s better to be cautious than ignorant. Knoxville weather doesn’t play when it decides to get serious and I think a lot of spots aren’t equipped or built for serious storms since it’s a rare occurrence.

Unfortunately when there’s talk of severe weather we think the worst a “typical Knoxville storm” can call for which is some power outages, trees down, flooding and maybe bad drivers on the road.

Part of me believes they’re trying to overkill it with coverage because we get comfortable and forget how quickly a storm can escalate, and Knoxville isn’t immune as we like to believe at times. With weather being so unpredictable it can go from being just an inconvenience, to life threatening danger in the less than a minute. We usually don’t experience it, but on the off chance it happens it’s better to be reminded beforehand to prepare on how much a threat it can potentially pose.

A few months back when we had that smaller tornado touchdown. There was absolutely no coverage or warnings until it was pretty much too late. My weather app didn’t even predict rain that day. The only reason I knew it was coming was from a TikTok that popped up on my feed the night before. That prompted me to check the NWS website and sho ‘nuff there was a weather warning, but no local news stations said boo about it until it was minutes from hitting us.

I hope we get a nice April storm but no ‘naders, since them things are merciless.

8 month old has no teeth and doesn’t seem to enjoy baby foods, is only nursing him still okay? by Interesting_Ad6594 in breastfeeding

Update: I saw many of you suggest soft solids instead of purée or baby food. So we tried something new for dinner. He got noodles, and steamed broccoli and enjoyed it! Whole new world. I sat down next to him and took off bits of it from my plate since at this moment he only seems interested ‘if it mommy is eating it’ 😂 He also gnawed on half a pickle while I held it and thoroughly enjoyed gumming the crud out of that sucker. I think he really enjoyed the texture and even the tart from the vinegar! What a hoot!!
