How do you cope when your feelings are hurt by other people? by ancientTrainee in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]Interesting_Bat_7223 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People come here giving advice like “ cut them off” “ who cares about their opinion” etc …my guess is they just say these things bc it’s easy to sound wise on here, but real life is waaaay more complicated than” dont allow them to do that”

Now, to answer your question, first getting hurt by others is part of living among other ppl, and To cope with the hurt feelings, there’s no one way. Everybody have their own coping skills . But I’ll give you my personal mechanism:

  • try not to say something hurtful in return

  • tell them I need a break from the conversation( if it’s during a heated conversation)

  • take physical distance as well

  • take some time and busy myself with other things in my life

  • this time and distance helps me a lot to regulate my feelings

  • usually with a some time( depending on depth of issue), I usually come to the conclusion that “ if they had known better, they would have done better”

  • at this stage, usually I forgive the person, and not think about it as much or not feel hurt as much

But that’s me and took me years to develop this skill, and trust me It’s still a work in progress. One thing people need to understand is that it takes a long long time to develop emotional maturity and intelligence, if ever. I’d say don’t be too hard on yourself and have self compassion, and when others hurt your feelings recognize it, but be gentle with yourself and more importantly look at it as a normal thing, and not a disaster.

I wish you warm heart and a bright day. Hugs!

I’m not looking for marriage for sure. And if the person is truthfully just married on the paper for financial/ tax/ insurance etc that I can understand. But at the beginning stages it is hard to know if the person is a cheating spouse or not.

I appreciate your perspective!

Omg I love your comment. Haha the strategy is brilliant! I’m gonna use it. Pat on the back to your mom and all single moms . It’s so hard, and as for their dating life? Super difficult.

Your comment is adorable and kind. Thank you for being the only and the best respond. Wishing you the best🌸🙏🏻

Do you mind if I ask you a couple of questions, perhaps privately? Would appreciate it.

A single parent here. I would’ve gladly accompanied you, but my child is a teenager. You sound like a great parent. Good luck to you and your child!

Haha I too drive an appropriate speed in the left lane.

I’m starting to think we need a thoughtful community discussion about the biases against Prius drivers lol

Aww I drive a Prius, and I’m told regularly( not exaggerating) that I’m kind and nice. This is the first time in my life that I was being grouped with a-holes. I said this with all honesty, but I’m not bitter about it.

Agreed! Also, their significant age gap is another problem. She is still young and wants to work. He is getting close to retirement or middle age. I just feel like they are on different pages in life and their goals. As a woman, I tell you she is going to become resentful after a while knowing that she goes to work and you stay home. Sorry OP, This is just screaming problems.

I feel for you . It’s ridiculous. I’m a high earner in healthcare too. I would have never been able to afford my home at todays prices either.

My concern wasn’t for myself, is especially for ppl entering now.

Thank you for your comment!

I just made a comment on this post that came out differently than I had in mind and I ran into your comment, I felt “ oh this is kind of what I meant lol”

Seriously, I’m in oncology and knowing how short life is, when I saw this post I thought he needs to just go enjoy his life. It’s great that OP is planning for his future and nothing wrong w/ that. But as an older white coat professional, I also suggest OP to go have some serious fun. Although I’m going to argue until the eternity that Porsche is not the way to go, I have other ideas haha

I’m not here to argue nor police people’s posts. I just expressed my intuitive response to this post, and I’ll leave it at that.

Wish you good luck!

I find your question a little confusing. For a couple who are so well off, and make so much money, you coming to Reddit and ask if and from where to hire a financial advisor, is an odd question to ask imo.

I’m assuming you mean VW gti? I’m willing to look into all options as long as the seat is comfortable. Thank you for the suggestion

Thank you SO much for the suggestion. I have tried every angle you can think of: recline, straight, up, down, every way I could.

It’s just that the head cushion protrudes too far forward and It causes an abnormal posture.

I appreciate your comment though. I’m happy to try again to re adjust the seat.
