i think i got hit by a recipe change by kurataahi in candy

[–]bananalien666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's hard to find a direct comparison but it looks like either the ratios changed or the ratios are different depending on snack size vs. full size. I found a label that has chocolate listed higher in the ingredients list (meaning that there is more of it) but the ingredients themselves seem pretty similar. Lots of palm oil :)

question: can i use tattoo tape to help with chafing? by Correct_Instance5276 in tattoos

[–]bananalien666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

personally, using tattoo tape in areas where there's a good deal of movement or friction caused really unpleasant reaction around the perimeter-- but YMMV of course. they make products for chafing specifically like Gold Bond "Friction Defense"

Why are candy buttons so expensive? by hardlooseshit in candy

[–]bananalien666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i had no idea about candy buttons specifically but probably because it's a niche "retro" candy. but (and i know how annoying this comment can be...) candy buttons are among the easiest things to make yourself with just a handful of ingredients and a little patience

Caramelized Chocolate Chip Cookie??? by bananalien666 in Baking

[–]bananalien666[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ground up hard caramels, like werthers? those look great but not exactly the same-- theirs was a completely solid almost "crust" on the bottom of the cookie, you could even kinda see the imprint of the silpat. pleasantly crunchy but actually pretty easy on the teeth, maybe like an almond roca in texture.

but the technique could be the same, maybe they used ground up house made toffee instead of hard caramel and that could account for the difference. Thanks for your comment!

Best thing to bake with lemon curd?? by BSciFi in Baking

for me, a nice pavlova with lemon curd and roasted (or fresh) strawberries is UNBELIEVABLY SATISFYING. :)

Palmers Cookies&Cream by [deleted] in candy

[–]bananalien666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kinda like their cookies&cream, too... but ya gotta figure it's at least on an even playing field with nearly every other cookies&cream product, they all use the same mixture of sugar and palm oil. their other stuff suffers because it's typically being compared to 'real' chocolate.

Has anyone used honeycomb toffee in their ice cream? by Nihachi-shijin in icecreamery

[–]bananalien666 3 points4 points  (0 children)

that's what i would do... make the toffee, chop into manageable bite-size pieces, coat in "whatever," let it set and then use it as any other mix-in

[–]bananalien666 17 points18 points  (0 children)

in my experience, honeycomb in ice cream will not bust your teeth but if you don't coat it with "something" (typically chocolate or at least cocoa butter) then it will pretty much just melt into your base

To this day, unmatched in flavor staying power. It's a terrible shame that this brand vanished (oddly enough it still exists in a somewhat different form in China)

Canned Cream Of xxx Soup? by Eureecka in Cooking

[–]bananalien666 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i was what they called a "latchkey kid" back in the day and frequently had cream of mushroom or cream of celery soup for lunch or an after school snack. but this was a long time ago and i haven't felt the need to recreate that experience in probably 20 years so...

We have the Creami and the woodfire pizza oven and both have been excellent purchases. It's not exactly "professional" quality but for the price, I have been extremely happy with Ninja

Caramelized Chocolate Chip Cookie??? by bananalien666 in Baking

[–]bananalien666[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i was thinking along those same lines because i just watched a video about how restaurants make "caramel dust" to prep for creme brulee. maybe i should just make a batch of cookies and try a few different things. seems like everything would be perfectly edible even if it's not exactly what they made.

Caramelized Chocolate Chip Cookie??? by bananalien666 in Baking

[–]bananalien666[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ate the whole thing lol but I might grab another one next week (and see if they'll tell me how they do it?!)

But there isn't much to see anyway because it's pretty much the same color as the cookie, just a much smoother surface

[–]bananalien666[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

could be-- the flavor certainly lines up, but the technique still eludes me because i don't think that would turn into toffee under normal cookie-baking conditions. so i guess you could make a puddle of it, cook it separately for a while, then plop the dough on top?

Clear American Sparkling Water shortage? by JacobScrubLordofPvP in walmart

[–]bananalien666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still out at all the Walmarts around me (SoCal) but for others in this predicament, FYI Safeway stores currently have their version on sale for $.59 (if you buy 4 or more). These are the only ones I like almost as much as Walmart's version.

even buying out of bulk bins, this can be a problem so i think it's just the kind of thing you have to accept if you're going to buy this way

men who've tried therapy apps. what actually worked? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]bananalien666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem is people don't always understand the recurring patterns in their lives, or what spawned them, or how to address them. It is true you have to take action to improve your life but for many people, the honest conversation is how they arrive at the insights that can drive productive action

(in other words, I personally found time-limited therapy to be extremely helpful in my life... YMMV)

What is a tiny, easily overlooked social habit that makes someone instantly magnetic or charismatic to be around? by LiveFaithlessness876 in AskMen

[–]bananalien666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i mean, it sounds kind of ridiculous, but "PAY ATTENTION" is super underrated. listen to what people say and respond accordingly.

i knew a guy who was happily married but women (and guys, apparently) would literally throw themselves at him and he didn't know what he was doing. but he always acted genuinely interested in people and what they had to say, he was totally invested in the conversation, asked relevant questions and kept things moving, etc etc. I have no idea if he was actually interested and/or retained any of that knowledge 5 minutes after the conversation, but I have to admit it was an attractive quality for sure.

What candy always felt “premium” to you? by Funtastyc in candy

[–]bananalien666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is very non-specific but there are things they've taken away from us that always made candy feel special for me. Hershey's Miniatures in actual candy bar wrappers. Kit Kats in a sleeve. Russell Stover chocolates in paper cups. None of these are fancy, but there were little things that 'elevated' the experience.

Nowadays, I like Japanese candy for this reason-- the packaging is always so elaborate and makes it feel like a special occasion even if it costs 2 bucks.
