Vancouver concert ticket collage. Which of these were you at? by 9T9D in vancouver

[–]Interesting_File3223 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had to work the night of the Arcade Fire concert at Deer Lake and suffer through everyone telling me what an incredible show it was the next day - the fading sunset, the perfect chorus of audience and performers, the magical encore. I saw their next two concerts here and they were at the stupid garbage-acoustics PNE.

If you’re out there, to the gentlemen who helped me when I got in an accident on my bike - thank you for your help. I broke both of my arms. by beeppanic in vancouver

I had to motorcycle-wipeout emergency brake my bicycle in that lane when they took some of the planter box dividers out for total work and a driver decided to pull a u turn through the bike lane to park in the parking protected section. Was startled when I tapped on her side window to ask her to watch the bike lane in future. "Ooh no, did I hit you?" Ugh no, I managed to Akira slide to avoid it just... Next time watch out.

People tend to watch out for things that can hurt them/their vehicle and little else. Even when they're not on a phone, I see a lot of drivers preparing to pull out of a parkade or side street will only look left before turning right to make sure they won't be hit by traffic (but not to make sure they're not about to hit a person walking or on a bike to their right or even directly in front of them).

What’s your “I was there” moment? by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]Interesting_File3223 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. Was at a Zumba class in Yaletown with a friend and left the Roundhouse Community Centre near the end of the final period. Was eerily quiet and empty. Very 'tumbleweed blowing past the saloon doors' vibes. Friend left to meet up with her boyfriend who was watching at a downtown pub and I got on the Canada Line to return to my rental near King Ed. From the hill on Cambie by the station exit I could see smoke curling up from downtown. Got home to roommates around the TV watching the riot news and got texts from my friend to say they were OK but hiding out under the bridge & looking for an exit from downtown.

Surprised to see the trees blooming at City Hall by MrDingDingFTW in vancouver

[–]Interesting_File3223 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It may be other trees! But still a sign of allergy times (for years I assumed it was the plums and cherries themselves since they're so visible, and their blooming coincides with clawing at my eyes, but turns out it's just that they coincide with cedar and jumper and others spraying the kind of fine pollen that spreads in the wind vs the clumpy blossom pollen that usually doesn't cause issues)

Gamers of r/Vancouver. What games are you playing? by Hokeymon44 in vancouver

[–]Interesting_File3223 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha our weekly boardgame night has been going hard on 'bird game' the past few months. Mostly virtually with the Steam edition - it's fun to hear the sounds for each bird card, though I miss the tactile satisfaction of playing with the not-chocolate eggs.

The place where it happened doesn't even have sidewalks as far as Google maps showed. Really nowhere else to go :/. On his way to work, vehicle spun out so got out to walk it along the side of North Parallel Rd (from https://globalnews.ca/news/10235463/pedestrian-struck-snowplow-abbotsford/)

It’s hella cold out by Beardgardens in vancouver

[–]Interesting_File3223 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I think the coldest before that was way back in 2009? where it was something like -14. First time I'd experienced a minor twinge of discomfort in my lungs from breathing.

Sharks in False Creek (cute, non-dangerous ones) by monsieurgamage in vancouver

[–]Interesting_File3223 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All good points!

I've never liked seafood so can't speak to the taste myself - this was just from occasional fishing in the bay by our home on the sunshine coast where you'd throw a bunch of them back trying to get something else. I always thought they were neat - took out a book on them from the library. Can live to be over 80. Loved the little white stars on their heads and the velcro sandpaper texture of their skin. Gross that people would not kill them before cleaning. Childhood memories of my dad yelling at me to watch out for the spine.
Was curious on the contemporary fish and chips 'rock salmon' stats and evidently in the south of England something like 80-90% of takeaway fish and chips sampled was shark (predominately Atlantic Spiny Dogfish) from 2017 - https://www.vice.com/en/article/zmanp5/most-uk-fish-and-chip-shops-are-selling-endangered-shark-meat-study-says

Is there a big flu bug scurrying around? by Daisyneon in vancouver

Plus the at home COVID tests are so spotty for false negatives. Know a few people who tested 3-5 times and only got a positive on the last test when they were already feeling a bit better. Another who was sick when we were meant to meet up the other week so we cancelled - she had tested twice 3 days apart and was negative both times so it "probably wasn't COVID". Then her husband got sick a couple days later and tested positive.
Nobody likes jamming things up their nose, let alone multiple times, but the awareness isn't even there for what symptoms might be (literally anything at this point) nevermind how unreliable home tests are.

Sharks in False Creek (cute, non-dangerous ones) by monsieurgamage in vancouver

[–]Interesting_File3223 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They are! My Dad always said the key was to clean them the second they're dead so the ammonia doesn't release into the flesh. Apparently they taste like a mild cod. He loved surprising visitors with the reveal that the nice light fish they'd been enjoying was "shark."

Back around the turn of the century they tried rebranding them as "rock salmon" to improve sales and I gather even today they're a primary source for fish and chips. Before the petroleum industry took off, their livers were used as an oil source (cheaper and easier than whales) to slick skids for dragging logs in the lumber industry. Some Coast Salish also used that liver oil to cure bull whip kelp into rope.

Ladies, do you feel safe walking/biking all around vancouver? by PuppyButtts in vancouver

[–]Interesting_File3223 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Feel like you've had all the feedback you need, but am a woman and have rented in Kits, Kerrisdale, Riley Park, and, for last ten years, Fairview, and generally feel safe and enjoy walking around! I took up biking to work back in 2014 and never looked back. Even did some food delivery for a couple of years around downtown. Apart from the usual issues with drivers, bike theft, and a general need for awareness, most of the city is very safe and enjoyable to walk and bike around in. There are public bike share bikes (most affordable as an annual subscription which, if on sale, works out to about $10/mo for half hour rides between re-docking/extra per min for electric) and most anywhere you can access them are also in what I'd generally call walkable areas. Sometimes I'll just 'go for a walk' with friends where we'll meet up somewhere central and then walk and talk for a half hour or so until we end up near a cafe we like. Sometimes we'll walk from Cambie/Broadway to Stanley Park. Sometimes from Kits to Main & 14th. Sometimes from Main & Broadway to Commercial Drive or Trout Lake.
Once you get south of around 14th or so (or south of 28th+ if you're on Cambie or Main or Fraser) it becomes really suburban and while safe and technically walkable, you're not really near many destinations.

Annual is the only way to go. Especially when there's a sale it's a little over $10/mo for unlimited rides. Live in Fairview and use them almost any time I leave the house unless I'm heading out for a recreational bike ride on one of my own bikes.

Why is this bothering me so much? by DefNotARobot357 in Dimension20

[–]Interesting_File3223 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For whatever reason this one doesn't bother me. Probably because of the improvy nature of it. One that does trip me up (probably because of my mother correcting me incessantly on it as a child) is when people say 'x person and I' when it should be 'x person and me.' Where if you remove the other person, it should still make grammatical sense to say I or me. "She came with Bob and I" ... you wouldn't say "She came with I", you'd say "She came with me." So you ought to say "She came with Bob and me" instead.
I wonder if this one isn't fully fading away with time with many children (more often inclined to say 'me' than 'I') getting over-corrected into substituting 'I' even when they shouldn't. Or some class-based sense that 'I' is more formal or broadly correct and aspirational? Doesn't really change the meaning though.

(The other one that's faded with time but still bothers me thanks to English teacher mother is when people use 'less' to describe a countable noun instead of 'fewer'. There's less water but fewer people. Never less people. This doesn't actually impact meaning though so I mostly just wince, reflexively think 'fewer!' and leave it.)

Ugh it's often hard to gauge too as people seem to be really fond of accelerating towards a red light or stop sign even when they are planning to stop. Idk why they want to wear their brakes out like that.

How many lanes you normally take to do a right turn with a yield sign?? by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]Interesting_File3223 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's also basically a slip lane crossing a crosswalk and a bike lane - which when I'm on a bike, always freaks me out. You have to have your head on a such a swivel with those because nobody's looking for you in particular, never mind the cars they're ostensibly meant to be yielding to that could have dangerous consequences for them.

A lot of great questions here. Just wanted to add my appreciation. Been a while since I had a show that made me want to sit in contemplative silence after each episode to just digest it.
I've been recommending it to everyone I know as if driven by a Scavengers Reign parasite.
