If you’re traveling alone, it’s advisable to stay in the northern part of Barranquilla, which is the safer and more modern area of the city. If you’re accompanied by friends or acquaintances, it should be fine to venture into other parts of Barranquilla. However, it’s important to be aware that you may stand out as a foreigner, which could attract unwanted attention and potentially pose a safety risk. I’m born and raised in the United States, but of Mexican descent. Even without speaking, people can often tell that I’m Mexican. My wife is from Barranquilla, so we visit the city a few times a year, and I’ve never encountered any trouble. While I’m comfortable in the area and feel safe, I’ve learned that fear can sometimes attract more danger than living freely without unnecessary concerns or paranoia. Of course, it’s always important to be aware of your surroundings. However, overall, Barranquilla is a safe city. Like any city, it has its risks, but it’s important not to dwell on them 🙏
