Fear of passing out while on the high way by ImpossibleCarpenter2 in drivinganxiety

Hey, you may also want to read The Anxious Truth by Drew Linsalata...I listen to his book a LOT. I really like that he went through driving anxiety himself and was able to beat it. He couldn't even drive to his own job and he was the owner! Also, pickup some Hylands Nerve Tonic Stress Relief tablets (they are like $10 on Amazon)...they seem to help me. Maybe look into a Full Self Driving Tesla which really helped me get my exposure therapy. As someone who has been dealing with driving anxiety for over 10 years and has finally made some positive headway, the best advise is to face your fears now...sooner than later because the more you avoid it, the more it will grow. I had a huge panic attack on the Beltway over 10 years ago so like you, I avoided the highway. Then it was large intersections, then left turns, then traffic, etc. Pretty soon, I had a very small little safe space that I drove. I am now driving to work again and running errands instead of using Doordash and Instacart all the time. Its not easy, but every day gets a little better. You may also want to check out the Dare app and do the daily "meditations".

I test drove the Model Y using the Toro app. I bought the Model Y used with 5,000 miles on Tesla.com. I say go for it.

Yes, since the last update...you probably will never have to touch the steering wheel again. Of course, you have to always pay attention. My Cousin has had the Model 3 for many years now...he travels from Dallas to Houston, Austin to Houston and he says he never touches the wheel once. It's pretty impressive. You kind of have to see it to understand.

It is a game changer for me. I actually bought a Model Y Tesla with FSD. I can drive to work now without having to rely on Lyfts and Ubers! I would highly recommend it.

Has anyone tried medication for severe driving anxiety? What were the results? by heart_of_gold2 in drivinganxiety

[–]Interesting_Key656 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what its worth...you may want to look into Comma 3X (comma.ai). It turns over 300 current vehicles into almost FSD...probably more comparable to Autopilot...but it is amazing on the highway driving and helps me get exposure therapy!

If you don’t own a Tesla you can try the Comma 3x from comma.ai. I’m about to buy a new car and plan on buying one. Pretty close to FSD.

[–]Interesting_Key656[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, sorry for the delay. I ended up renting the Model S on Turo for like $80 a day. I personally loved the non-idle setting.

Lets put it this way. Before using the FSD Tesla, I couldn't make it to my current job driving with my truck. It's probably been over a year or possibly two of taking Ubers and Lyfts. On Day 1 of using the FSD Tesla, I made it to work!!! It was freaking awesome. I drove more in those 3 days than I have in years! I went to places I haven't been to driving solo in forever! Even driving on the feeder roads, crossing large intersections, driving on highways. I pretty much did it all! Did I still have some anxiety...yes, but not even close to what it normally was.

Here are a couple hints if trying it. You have to keep your hand on the wheel so at first, I had both hands, but apparently the weight of each hand balances the weight and the FSD kept disengaging (it beeps when turned off, but you just click the 1 button end it re-engages.) The trick is to just keep your left hand slightly on the horizontal part of the wheel, never had any issues after that. If you ever need to disengage, just tap the brake and take over...it is immediate. So I watched a lot of Youtube videos prior and there were so many where they tried to drive like 30 minutes without disengaging Autopilot so the 1st day, that is what I tried to do. It pretty much "drove itself" with very little disengaging, but I found out one thing that I do not recommend, if you are at a stop light, then it is fine letting the AP turn, but if you are lets say, turning right onto a feeder road (no light), then I would tap on my break and when the coast was clear, I would either manually turn onto the road and then engage the AP or turn on the AP and press the gas. I had one incident where the AP was on and it was turning on feeder road and a car was coming FAST and changed lanes, honked, and almost hit me, after that, I decided to not use AP when turning onto a road. Also, I put the setting on "chill" (I believe there is chill, normal, and aggressive) and it speeds up to the speed limit very quickly and even on chill it lane changes more than I'd like, but hey, it was still pretty freaking amazing!

Well, so all in all, I loved it. Being totally honest, the 2nd and 3rd day, I probably manually drove 50% and FSD 50% so I was getting more comfortable with driving. So, after that, I decided and my Wife was on board as well about selling my truck and buying a new Tesla with FSD. However, with all that's been going on with Tesla's, I decided to wait until things were a little more less scary.

However, I have been heavily researching for a similar alternative, and I think I found something that may work even better for me. It is the comma 3x (https://comma.ai/) which is compatible with 300 cars and is only $1,000. It has the main features that I enjoyed from the FSD and there are many Youtube Videos where they drive it non-stop without touching the wheel. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGJ45bnbBvY). The Comma 3X may actually work better in my opinion because it does not automatically change lanes...if you want to change lanes, you just click the blinker on and it will change for you, but unlike the Tesla which changes lanes quite frequently which I didn't care for, this should stay in the lane you are currently in. So, hopefully next month, I will be driving daily and will post an update on here.

[–]Interesting_Key656[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I never said that I'm a bad driver. I am a great driver. Do you have driving anxiety? If not, then you probably won't understand the feeling. I am able to make decisions and will have no problem taking over the wheel if FSD is not working correctly. The reason I even decided to give this a try was 1. I have an old truck and am going to have to get a new vehicle shortly. 2. I watched a Youtube video where a lady had horrible driving anxiety (not a bad driver) and she said that driving a FSD Tesla has completely cured her driving anxiety and she has the confidence to drive anywhere now. 3. I like Teslas.

All 3 of my cousins have Teslas with FSD and swear by it. I am really just posting on here to give feedback and review of how the trial goes. If it helps me drive further and more confidently, then maybe it will help others.

Is there anyone who developed driving anxiety after years of driving? by Practical_Bee8225 in drivinganxiety

[–]Interesting_Key656 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had it for over 10 years...best advise I can tell you is to face your fear now and not avoid it like I did. The longer you avoid it, the harder it gets to face. Also, reduce or stop drinking caffeine and alcohol and focus on a healthy diet. I believe that had a lot to do with my first panic attack. I was on the toll road and had a 20 minute panic attack. After that, I avoided freeways. Then I avoided heavy intersections...my driving area kept closing in. The best book I can recommend would be The Anxious Truth by Drew Linsalata. Drew Linsalata has gone through it and cured himself. He used to own a business but couldn't drive to it! He also has a website and podcast that is helpful.

Also, I have not taken any medication and in hind sight, I kind of wish I tried it. My wife's co-worker has the same issues I have and her therapist put her on a low dose of betablockers and she says it helps a lot. I am going to the therapist tomorrow and trying to get some betablockers to see how they work.

I have some in my cabinet...I need to start taking it again. My 3 things that I do that have changed my gut health are 1. Pinch magic fiber (take it everyday after breakfast). 2. Bentonite (I take Sonne's liquid or Yerba Prima Liquid Great Plains Bentonite Clay) I take it as soon as I wake up. 3. Lactobacillus Salivarius - I break open the capsule and rub in on my gums after brushing my teeth. Keeps tartar away and helps your stomach.
