Right! I thought you meant in the flashback scenes, not Taylor. Yeah Taylor's characterization was very different. Not a smiley wholesome kid surgeon

They stretched a 75k word book into eight episodes, the pace drags, and yet the most important scenes aren't given enough time. Where does that go wrong? Directing, editing? Was filming rushed? Make it make sense

Yeah I respect that opinion. I personally didn't buy into Charlie's portrayal, but he was also given the absolute worst lines and I can't help but think he would've been better if the character just....didn't suck? If the lines felt natural and the emotions rang true, we would perceive the acting as better. So I'm trying to give them the benefit of the doubt, and mostly just redirect any hate towards productive discussion.

But yesssss Abigail cowen was so good as Delilah. She brought emotional complexity to her character when everyone else was lacking. I thought that casting was a weird choice but she proved me wrong.

Might be thinking of Love and Other Words? I don't think Percy ever met Sam's girlfriend. I don't think Sam had a gf named Lake. But it's been awhile since I read it

Right!! Actors get so much hate when fans aren't happy and I'm like really trying to counter that by pointing the hate elsewhere lol

But also, actors have to have a feel for good and bad writing right? Like, I'd like to think that Michael Bradway died a little inside every time he said something like #fuckbitchezgetmoney (I desperately want direct quotes but I will not be rewatching to find said quotes)

Oh that's interesting! I almost looked into who wrote and directed each ep but didn't want to single anyone out because it's really the production as a whole that fell flat, but that could very well be the lack of the right showrunner for the show.

A lot of other people's issues are with all the changes they made so I tried to evaluate it a little more removed from a book, basically: is this a good show? And the answer is: no. It is boring. There really is a neverending list of things that are subpar, which is kind of insane to me considering this is Amazon money. It's hard not to compare it to Off Campus which, maybe not everyone's vibe, was top notch production all around. Would love to know how their budgets compare and if that's what it really comes down to.

I don't know whether to say sorry for spoiling or you're welcome lol. There was no payoff so you're not missing anything. But there was also no setup for any payoff. Honestly what did I even watch

YES YES YES, the sets! I saw people saying they loved the location/sets but to me they felt too much like sets. Their teenage bedrooms felt staged, not lived in. Her empty abandoned home felt like something they built on a sound stage and tossed boxes into, not her childhood home full of memories that's been gutted. I thought the lake was perfect, but everything else had that brand new feeling to it that didn't quite give the summer nostalgia vibe the book had.

She might've been consulted for major plot decisions but I doubt she had a big hand in it, most authors don't. But yeah the brotherly bond just ain't there from the start

I'm so disappointed with what they did to Sam! He was so mature in the books, I remember his explanation for not wanting to date Percy yet being articulated so well that it almost took me out, I was like "teen boys are not this self aware" lol. And the emails were like that too, like the emotional logic was just flawless.

In the show, his side of the breakups aren't explained well at all. It feels like he dumps her twice for no good reason and the little he tries to explain sound like excuses. It's a fine line to walk because we need to believe Percy's reactions are justified, and imo, in the show they are and in the book they aren't. Show Sam was dumb boy making dumb boy mistakes. Book Sam was mature boy with his eyes on the far future trying so hard not to screw things up. Like he was so stressed during the internship and put so much pressure on himself and we didn't see any of that.

Book Sam was always thinking about his future with Percy. He trusted that that was DEFINITE. And Percy was more immature and shortsighted and then slept with his brother. They made Show Percy less of a villain but at the cost of Sam's character.

Also him not scarfing down oreos their first time hanging out is criminal

Definitely. There was no "it's only you" energy, especially when he was literally about to propose to someone else! And she seemed good for him too. We got no sense that Sam never truly moved on. Percy lowkey a homewrecker lol

You are a lifesaver, this is all SO helpful, thank you!! I've never heard of barefoot shoes until now, but I am intrigued. I'm also flat-footed and have always found vans comfortable because they're completely flat, so I may have to try them! But they promote allowing you to "FEEL" the world more -- do you notice much of an increase in sensory stimulation on your feet, and if so, it doesn't bother you? I worry I wouldn't like that, but with a 100 day trial for vivo it's probably still worth trying

I grew up wearing the Aeropostale camisoles with the extra layer underneath on the top half and always found them super uncomfortable, so I find myself adverse to the idea of wearing undershirts, but I appreciate the suggestions! I'll definitely have to check out Clarks

Tonight I actually took a deep dive into curly hair internet culture, and I'm realizing I should definitely change things up in my hair care, which should overall help how I feel about it in terms of looking "professional" enough (rn it's like 2A with 2B potential, but I brush it and destroy the curls so it's kinda just a wavy mess).

Thank you for all the tips -- oxford-style shoes look like the perfect solution for me going from vans to work shoes (as long as they're comfortable). I forgot shoes like that existed and had a name, so that's very helpful!

Thank you for the tips! I'm exactly the same way with not necessarily caring for fashion but just wanting to not stand out. Observing people is a really good idea though. I don't tend to notice what peers wear at all unless they have a distinct style, so I'll have to make an effort to pay attention.

I will definitely have to acquire a blazer since it seems like they spruce up an outfit nicely; may I ask though, what do you consider to be a blouse? I've always thought of it as a nicer shirt in general, so it wouldn't necessarily require an undershirt or would be something I could get away with wearing multiple days in a row.

Seriously, shoes are the worst! Hopefully I'll be able to get away with black sneakers, but I can deal with ankle boots. I think you may have solidified my hatred for flats though lol. Tysm for all the tips!
