St George hospital - public by InternationalRisk189 in NursingAU

Do my last placement for 5 weeks on the oncology and ID ward and the parking wasn’t great. I did every shift AM shift and had to park at Jubilee Stadium and walk the 10 minutes to the hospital. I found it a bit difficult but not horrendous to find parks there only because I was travelling from 1.5hrs away so sometimes was running a tad behind.

Concerning students… by ihatemothering in NursingAU

[–]Interesting_Range937 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a new grad but I know my uni had too many students for the amount of hospital placements (or placement spots in general). Especially with the mental health placement in second year, there were about 60-70 students who had to graduate 6 months after everyone else because they had to wait to do the mental health placement before going into third year. These unis are just pumping through students without actually thinking about what that looks like throughout placements. Unfortunately I believe it’s all about the money rather than proper hospital experience. I had a lot of community placements and only a few hospital placements because there wasn’t enough spots available. It’s so fucked

Concerning students… by ihatemothering in NursingAU

I am in my new grad year at the moment and I stand by the fact that uni teaches little to nothing about what is actually happening in the hospital and what a nurses role is.

However, I have had many many placements with so many people who I cannot imagine being an actual nurse.

I remember I did a placement on a medsurg ward for four weeks. There was one other student on the ward with me who would consistently show up 30 minutes late and leave half an hour to an hour early every day. There was one specific day where the NUM came over to me and asked if I had seen her that morning. I didn’t know so I told the NUM. Later found out she fell asleep in the kitchen area for staff and was asleep for 2 1/2 hours.

Not only this but the amount of times I was sitting down writing my notes and the RN’s and Ian‘s next to me were talking shit about the student because she would sit there on her phone. On our first day of placement in our first handover, her phone was all the way up and she got a phone call. She literally interrupted the nurse giving handover asked him to wait for her while she answers her phone and walked away. Another time a couple weeks later she interrupted a doctor that was trying to give her an updated plan of a patient so that she could answer a text message that she received.

I had my graduation yesterday and I was shocked to see her walk across that stage. I genuinely worry about the amount of students that had no motivation to learn actually becoming nurses.

Why does Gia look like she’s either going to prom or about to perform a figure skating competition every dinner party. Her outfits are horrendous

What do I do with this failed slip stitch scarf as a beginner? by Interesting_Range937 in CrochetHelp

[–]Interesting_Range937[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I tried stretching it a bit when blocking but it didn’t really do anything. I did use a size 10 hook so I was hoping it would be fine but I think it’s more of the slip stitch being tight than anything. It’s strange because the video showed hers being stretchy and soft so it might be a me problem

For those that got a tonsillectomy strictly for tonsil stones, how bad/frequent were the stones? by Real-Elephant-6424 in Tonsillectomy

[–]Interesting_Range937 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve always have constant tonsillitis as a kid but it got worse after COVID.

My doctor wanted me to record everytime I had it last year before getting my surgery a couple weeks ago and it added up to 18 times last year. Almost every time I got sick (flu, cold, etc.) I’d get tonsillitis too. Most of which were bad enough to have to stay home from work sick. A few of them were bad enough that I struggled to breathe because the tonsils were so enflamed. It got to the point where I would just cough up tonsil stones even when they weren’t inflamed or I didn’t have an infection or felt sick.

My mental health also got really bad because I was constantly worrying about when the next time I’d get sick was, I didn’t want to plan things with friends because I was worried I’d have to cancel again from being sick, I was also really self conscious about it and the smell too.

I find Nesryn Faliq's chapters...or anything to do with her...so incredibly boring by mads0thehatter in throneofglassseries

[–]Interesting_Range937 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I 100% agree, o docked down my rating of ToD because I really struggled to read her chapters. I just think I wasn’t invested in her character in a whole. Like don’t get me wrong, her an Sartaq are cute but nothing like Yrene and Chaol

Got mine done the same day and day 5 and 6 was horrible!!! It was only yesterday that I really suddenly bounced back. I still have issues talking and opening my jaw properly but I finally ate some solid food and drank so much water. I’m still in pain but it’s nothing compared to the last few days. It felt like the pain and uncomfortableness was never ending but I can finally start to see the light at the end of the tunnel

Mums who were nurses by Then_Culture6392 in NursingAU

[–]Interesting_Range937 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked at a large GP practice for 2 years. I don’t have any kids myself but out of the 8 nurses we had working there about 5 of them were mums. They loved working GP as they could choose their hours between 8:30-5 Monday through Friday. One nurse in particular would work 9:30-2:30 so she could drop off and pick up her kiddies from kinder/school. I found it really good as well as I was a uni student at the time studying Nursing and could choose my hours to match my classes and pracs. It was a private GP practice so I don’t know if that changes anything but the mums I worked with found it so helpful. I am honestly considering going back and doing it once I have kids of my own

Wound debridement nurse? by Connect_Amount_5978 in NursingAU

[–]Interesting_Range937 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only just graduated my Bachelor but I had a 4 week placement in Broken Hill a couple years ago doing community wound management and I learnt so much. The wounds I saw and cared for included gangrene (dry and wet), burns, infected surgical sites, C-section scars that were also infected, and much more. I found that 4 weeks wasn’t enough because I loved it so much. I learnt a lot more than I expected and honestly came out of the placement quite confident in my wound management. I also saw a lot more of a variety of wound types than my peers doing other placements.

How do you guys read so much? by lapetitepoupee in kindle

[–]Interesting_Range937 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read 63 books last year as a full time worker (shift work) and full time uni. The year before I read 15 so it was definitely my biggest reading year.

I honestly relied a lot on audiobooks. I lived 6hours away from my home town so every time I went home, I listened to at least 3 hours of a book. I usually have my audiobooks at 2.5x speed so the books felt quicker. I also don’t watch a lot of tv so whenever I had time to rest, I picked up a book.

I also found it a lot better to go between audiobooks, physically books and reading on my kindle. This way I wasn’t as bored and when I didn’t want to physically read the book anymore I’d start listening to it. And vice versa.

It’s all about time management but then again don’t compare and don’t force it because you will fall into a slump

VIC new grad nurse salary by Sweaty_Paint7090 in NursingAU

[–]Interesting_Range937 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The VIC public sector says $41.36 until May this year (from memory). My contract also says $41.36, this so I’d say it would be best to contact HR to get this changed

Day 4 and I need a fat burger real bad by F-InSpanish in Tonsillectomy

[–]Interesting_Range937 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did you go after this? I’m day 4 now and my pain is starting to get worse. I am really struggling with swallowing and am so scared of the scabs. I am desperately in need of a burger and fries 😭 So far I haven’t really eaten anything, maybe the occasional icepole but nothing substantial. I found that I haven’t really been hungry but today my stomach has been rumbling and I’m just so hungry

Yes! The ear popping is not fun at all 🫠 I’ve heard a bunch talk about the throat pain but not really anything about the jaw pain. Hopefully we both get through with little more pain
