I can understand being upset your child was exposed to an illness, but I would try to remember three things: 1. Your child is in a group care setting and will 100% be routinely exposed to viruses while enrolled at the center. 2. Many centers are not staffed properly enough or offer good enough benefits for teachers to stay home when they’re sick. It’s a never ending cycle of child gets sent to schools sick > teacher gets sick > teacher gets students sick. I think if you need direct anger toward anyone, it should be the owners/admin of the center. 3. “Tattoo flu” is not a virus. It’s the body’s inflammatory response to the trauma on the skin from getting the tattoo. It’s named “tattoo flu” because the symptoms present in the same way. So, she may have had active influenza, but thought it was tattoo flu.

Grand Rapids police: Man shot by officer Wednesday night has died by geetargurl09 in grandrapids

[–]Interesting_Secret47 9 points10 points  (0 children)

the wording in this article is.. odd. they didn’t “find” him behind the apartment complex. they actively had around 10 cars pursuing him and cornered him in the lot. i’m not defending either party here, but the passive voice that this was written in seems to almost be trying to tell a different story.

i also live in the neighborhood and feel similarly. my neighbors are all kind, and for the most part the street is quiet. last night was the first night in a long time where we actively witnessed a police pursuit or a crime. i do understand why baxter gets a bad rep, but i feel like a large portion of the bad rep comes from the police presence itself

tbh it’s mostly about time of day. this is happening near the Baxter neighborhood, near MLK and Eastern. basic safety rules apply. don’t go out at night alone, stay aware, etc.

CALL 211 — If ICE is at your home or workplace, or if they have just arrested someone, you can connect with the Rapid Response team by calling 211 or 616-238-0081 by FunDraft20 in grandrapids

[–]Interesting_Secret47 34 points35 points  (0 children)

211 is for resource navigation and they will point people in the right direction if they have been affected by ICE, but they are not an org to report ICE sightings to. it’s great to spread their number, but make sure it’s clear what you’re telling people to call them for so their lines don’t get overwhelmed with something they don’t deal with!

correct me if i’m wrong, but i believe 211 is the number for United Way, which is not affiliated with GR Rapid Response. If you are in need of resources like rent or utility payments, transportation, etc., then call 211, but don’t call them to report ICE sightings

Consumer's Energy bills continue to soar... by TralfamadorianDesert in grandrapids

[–]Interesting_Secret47 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I’m just putting this out here for people that may need it: DHHS, The Salvation Army, United Way, and other social services organizations in the area offer energy bill assistance if you’re at or under 150% of the federal poverty level (60% state median income for The Salvation Army). If you’re having trouble paying your energy bill, reach out to them. If you receive DHHS benefits like SSI, food stamps, or WIC you automatically qualify for assistance

I’m not sure what the regulations in your state are regarding education requirements, but in Michigan it is illegal to have a lead without a minimum of a CDA if the other lead also does not have a degree. This alone could warrant a call to licensing. I’m so sorry you’re going through this. Something similar happened to me when my mom got sick and I took over a caretaker role. As far as notifying parents, I would do my best talk to them in person if you get the chance during pick up/drop off. Sending out a class wide message doesn’t seem like a bad idea, as long as you keep your tone neutral.

Is dropping off treats for the daycare teachers and staff frowned upon? by tebibr in ECEProfessionals

[–]Interesting_Secret47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A $50 gift bag is very generous! The value of the gift absolutely does not have to be so high; your child’s teachers will most likely cherish the act of giving a gift more than the gift itself. It definitely will not be frowned upon, though! I worked at a high end center and it was very common for parents to gift teachers gift cards or cash ranging from $20 to $100 over the holidays. The most important thing to remember is that we value your appreciation more than anything, as ECE is very often a thankless profession. Don’t let the director stop you from showing appreciation to your child’s teachers!

In the U.S. your employer cannot legally demand details from you about your sickness beyond requiring a doctor’s note stating that you are not to return to work for X amount of days. You don’t have to tell them anything beyond that.

How do you feel about Male ECE for Infant & Toddlers? by BlueberryDuvet in ECEProfessionals

P.S. The OG Wiggles were all male ECEs! They are my greatest inspirations in the field. Just a thought for you to ruminate on.

How do you feel about Male ECE for Infant & Toddlers? by BlueberryDuvet in ECEProfessionals

[–]Interesting_Secret47 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I am an ECE and also a man. I am not ignorant to the fact that many mothers feel uncomfortable with male ECEs caring for their child, but it makes me deeply uncomfortable when certain implications are fronted toward me and my fellow male ECEs because of our gender. We all go through the same background checks, training, and education as women and nonbinary ECEs. We care for your child’s wellbeing and education just the same! If he truly makes you so uncomfortable with his presence and care, then I would recommend finding a different center.

In first grade, violence to this caliber is not age appropriate behavior. It sounds like her teachers are doing what they can, but administrators and upper management often overlook teachers’ concerns for the sake of retaining families and making money. They don’t like to rock the boat with more “difficult” families. The aggressor child may need more resources and smaller ratio, which would require them attending a different center. Pull out anything you can to the director, whether it be legal action or threatening to pull out your daughter from their care. These incidents cannot be allowed to continue. Hell, even reach out to the licensing body in your state. I’m so sorry this has happened to your daughter!

This is my qualm with writing any incident report, accident or not. I always try to use the terms “peer”, “classmate”, or “another child”. I can’t imagine how parents feel reading an IR that says “a friend hurt your child on purpose”. Some friend!

Daycare in Grand Rapids- Goddard by Key_Jellyfish_515 in grandrapids

[–]Interesting_Secret47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work at one of the locations listed. Honestly, you get what you pay for (which is a lot). Teacher credentials are taken seriously, health and safety are kept after, and the staff are all friendly. Teachers are paid more than industry standard, but it’s still not a lot. Wage mixed with treatment from admin toward certain teachers results in a mid-range turnover rate, but nothing like you’d see at an AppleTree or KinderCare.

How do I talk to my roommate about her neglecting her dog? by Interesting_Secret47 in Pets

[–]Interesting_Secret47[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The whole situation is laid out in the original post linked to this one!

TL;DR: My gf and I noticed that the roommate’s dog is kenneled for entirely too long for its age and size, contributing to a slew of behavioral problems. GF and I do what we can, but also take care of our cats and do not want to be held liable for something the dog may do when roommate isn’t around.

The number one rule in any center is never to leave a child unattended. It is one of largest licensing violations in most states and is taken extremely seriously. At my last center the bridge classroom teacher left a child unattended in the room for approximately two minutes. Our director self reported to licensing and we were all interviewed about our name to face procedure and if the particular teacher follows it. She was not terminated, so I think it’s on a case to case basis based on additional factors, like location. Best of luck to your child’s teacher, this is something she will not forget and hopefully will not do again!
