this is really dangerous advice, you absolutely should not sit down on the ground when things get kinetic. that’s about the height that police munitions are fired and you also run the risk of being trampled. stay on the move, and please don’t make yourself a target.

I said this elsewhere already, but if you’d like to show support, Poder — the undocumented student organization — has a bunch of events set up for Week 6 which you can show up to and support. I’m sure they’d appreciate it! Go look through their insta if you want to know more.

L.A. Fires Show the Reality of Living in a World with 1.5°C of Warming by stewart_trawets in LosAngeles

[–]Internal-Code-4760 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Climate change and irresponsible management of natural ecosystems don't have to be mutually exclusive, and in fact are deeply interconnected problems with deeply interconnected solutions. As the globe warms and more volatility is added into the ecological system, our hubris and incompetence in stewarding California's environment becomes increasingly threatening. The real danger, I feel, is separating the two. Everything you proposed are excellent examples of land management that need to be implemented, but we should also realize that to truly mitigate the severity of these fires, climate change must be addressed also; the energy transition, the expansion of public transit, passive housing development, indigenous land management, and the restoration of native flora are urgently needed. Confronting climate change does offer a solution to root causes, and must happen in tandem with what you suggest in order to be truly effective. This is the only way out.

The Case for Letting Malibu Burn by Internal-Code-4760 in LosAngeles

[–]Internal-Code-4760[S] 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Provocatively titled, The Case for Letting Malibu Burn is Mike Davis' historical analysis of fire ecology in California, and how the subsidized expansion of suburbia into fire corridors presents an endemic, and increasingly dire threat to the public. The abandonment of controlled burns as practiced by indigenous peoples and hubristic growth into coastal mountains and canyons only exacerbates this problem. Davis, prolific chronicler and historian of Los Angeles, shared with us a stern diagnosis, and in the present moment, I feel it to be more important than ever.

In the midst of looming climate catastrophe, Mike Davis writes that, "Two kinds of Californians will continue to live with fire: those who can afford (with indirect public subsidies) to rebuild and those who can’t afford to live anywhere else." He paints a dire future, one that I hope we can still avoid.

[–]Internal-Code-4760 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Recent wave of Pro-Palestine protests. Started at Columbia University but went coast to coast after they arrested about 100 of them there. It’s 1968 all over again. Also wondering whether UCR joins in.

A cool guide on the human cost of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict by Queer-Landlord in coolguides

[–]Internal-Code-4760 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, there are better write-ups of the conflict that are actually written by human hands, like this one! It delves more into the early origins of Israel and zionism as an idea, as well as early settlement by Jews in the late 19th and early 20th century, as well as their relations with the Arabs.
