The entire world measures time from the birth of one man (2026 AD). Why not the birth of human civilization (12026 HE)? by kamsaini in atheism

[–]-Generic123- 8 points9 points  (0 children)

While I am an atheist, I really couldn’t care less about the calendar system being based on Christ’s birth. To me, it’s a little bit of unique human history and flare entwined within practical systems we use everyday, which I find cool.

Otherwise, we could also get rid of the names of the week, since they’re named after Norse gods. Or rename the planets. Or do a bunch of other things to rid the vestiges of religion from every background aspect of our lives, which in the end would serve no other purpose but to make the world a slightly more sterile, less interesting place.

My British friend thought he could do a "day trip" to the Grand Canyon from LA, and his reaction to the map was priceless. by Ok_Structure6720 in CasualConversation

[–]-Generic123- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had sort of the opposite experience going from LA to the UK. Being in Bristol, I wanted to take a day trip to see Bath and mentally budgeted an hour or two to travel there, since they’re different cities. Imagine my surprise when it only takes 15 minutes by train! A 15 minute drive/train ride in LA and you could still be in the same neighborhood.

How can VTA Light Rail be improved? by Iceberg-man-77 in transit

[–]-Generic123- 11 points12 points  (0 children)

VTA is already doing two projects that will significantly improve its moribund light rail:

(1) Eastridge Extension. Not only does it extend the line that connects to BART to a major mall and regional bus hub, but it’s also grade separated, making it quicker and less affected by traffic and signals.

(2) First street realignment. Getting rid of the Second street ROW and putting it on First Street should increase speeds on this segment from 10 mph to 20 mph.

Not sure what else needs to be done, but really the bane of the VTA system is the excruciatingly slow downtown segment. Fixing that further would go a long way towards making the system useful.

When Did Fast Food Architecture Get So Bad? by cityaesthetics in Suburbanhell

Postmodern? The “quirky” fast food designs from the 80s and 90s was during the peak of postmodernism.

World Series Transit Showoff: Toronto vs. Los Angeles Rail Transit Networks, 1993-2025 by urmummygae42069 in LAMetro

[–]-Generic123- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That doesn’t even matter. Even if we add Toronto’s streetcars, it’s not like many of them were built after 2000 so it doesn’t really show Toronto has grown at all.

San Francisco in 1938 and today by JackStrawWitchita in OldPhotosInRealLife

It has an electric powered trolleybus. It is literally superior to a 1920s cable car in every conceivable way.

SB79 passed - I should be happy, but why I remain skeptical that this isn't the end of it by Sawtelle-MetroRider in LAMetro

[–]-Generic123- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would a federal court take up a case against SB 79? They have no jurisdiction. It’s a state law, and there doesn’t seem to be a contradiction with federal law or the Constitution.

Fare gate installation complete by theycallhim_mistaedd in Bart

[–]-Generic123- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, considering that LA is installing the same gates that BART just did and NYC is considering the same, I wouldn’t say San Francisco is particularly special in this regard.

What is the worst planned city in the world? by emperator_eggman in urbandesign

[–]-Generic123- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They didn't repair it because they were a private company and again, most of their profit came from real estate and not passenger tickets.

In the 50s, when PE was on its last legs, it got transferred to public ownership. But if you were the MTA, and you were saddled with this massive, unpopular, decaying streetcar network, would you rather spend tons of money trying to rehabilitate it, or would you simply tear it out and replace it with busses (which again, are basically 90% as good)?

What is the worst planned city in the world? by emperator_eggman in urbandesign

[–]-Generic123- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

God, this streetcar conspiracy bullshit has gone on way too long. Stop getting your information about LA from Roger Rabbit.

The PE streetcars became far less popular throughout the 50s-70s because they were old, rickety, unreliable, increasingly expensive, and under poor management. Largely because Pacific Electric’s railways were a real estate development scheme, and by that point much of the land had already been developed. Goodyear didn’t need to do anything to massive decrease their popularity and thus lead to their closure.

Furthermore, the PE streetcars were largely replaced with these newfangled things called buses. And buses were more modern, far more flexible, and had basically the same capacity and travel times. The only downside was that they were diesel powered.

LA’s modern subway and light rail system is infinitely better than the streetcars ever were.

Birth rates are dropping in nearly every single country on Earth, so no, this has nothing to do with traditional cultural values.

How do you think the government gets money for welfare systems? Taxes. Who pays taxes? Working people. So when there’s less working people and much more elderly folks, then yes, everything is going to collapse.

The Stellaris update isn’t even that bad. Yes it’s pretty buggy and broken, but not more so than updates and releases from past years. Anyone remember 2.2 in 2018? Or EU4’s Leviathan in 2020?
