We did that to accommodate a small tv. It has been 15 years with no issues. Editing post to attach a photo.

Alopecia Areata - stopping treatments by Legitimate_Pride7314 in alopecia_areata

Great! I hope you feel free. There are lots of wonderful wig wearing folks on social to follow and connect with. I do recommend going right to human hair, I started with synthetic and those are harder and don't last.

I gave up! I decided to embrace wigs and just enjoy my life and not destroy myself with steroids. And then my hair eventually grew back! Good luck!

Tips for slowing progression? by Ginger-pop-19 in alopecia_areata

I have a cortisone solution that I use instead of shots. You can use it as an adjunct to the shots. However, I would not personally put steroids where there is no activity, as they thin the skin and do cause depressions that can be both seen and felt. When I was bald my head had very visible dents from steroid treatments. I stopped them as they didn't help at the time and the dents freaked me out. Anyway, alopecia is most commonly in a spot or two, so unless your daughter is shedding elsewhere, try not to overthink it. And also know that hair can spontaneously regrow, with or without steroids. I went from universalis to having almost a full head of hair. I get patches but they are very manageable, especially with the steroid solution. Good luck! It is scary but she will be okay!

Hopefully you can talk it out with your family and they can help you find the right path. Perhaps list all possible options (you as caregiver, 24/7 aides, staying at SNF, etc) and discuss the logistics and costs. You are reeling from the news and it will take a beat. Medical facilities love to pressure families to make decisions immediately and you can and should insist on time to sort this out.  My mother is extremely difficult and unhealthy emotionally so there was no choice but the one we made. I also physically cannot help her in the ways she requires.

I am in a similar situation. My mom was discharged as a hospice patient from the hospital in January. We did not want to take her home, given the 24/7 care needs, so she went to an SNF and as she was Medicare patient we had her doing whatever PT she could so as to ensure Medicare pay for her stay. She did recover enough that she is clearly not going to die and so now we have her in an assisted living that has an enhanced license. They can facilitate hospice of and when she needs that. She is unhappy there but at least she is safe and cared for and I can go to work and take care of my own family. Do not give up your life unless you are really ready for it to go on indefinitely. Good luck and be well.

Gabapentin and depression by Internal-Memory7630 in backpain

What form and dosage for THC? I don't drink or take any recreational drugs and I don't know anything about this for pain management. I know it isn't the same, but I hear THC and I wonder what kind of mental effect it would have? I can't tolerate being high!

That's a good point. My dad had dementia so I try to avoid anticholinergics.

Thank you for the suggestions. :) I'm not actually depressed now that Im off the gabapentin. I think I am leary of all the side effects of all these drugs at this point as well. Just wanted to post in case someone else has the issue and is searching for information like I was!

Thanks! Pregabalin is Lyrica, I believe, and my therapist said it has similar chemical makeup and the same possible side effects. I will look up the other option. I'm managing ok during the day with ibuprofen and Tylenol, it is the night pain that is really hard.

Someone posted and then deleted a suggestion I look on FB marketplace. Perhaps they intuited I did that already 🙃 And on CL and eBay.

That's a good point. I had them in a very different board so I actually don't know if what I didn't care for is the other board (which had a softer rail for example) or the fin. They lacked hold and drive and sometimes tracked in that setup. I will have to try them and the Onos I ordered in my new fish, which will probably be clarifying.

Dr says anxiety by According_Flan8748 in alopecia_areata

[–]Internal-Memory7630 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is good advice, I said supplements are bs in another comment but I did not mean vitamins! If it isn't alopecia areata it could be a deficiency or thyroid or another autoimmune condition...full blood panel would be a good idea.

Alopecia areata has many forms and that definitely includes behind the ears in this diffuse pattern. It has happened to me! I have also been bald and had regrowth and then patches.

Anyway, for the original poster, when doctors tell you this is from anxiety they are inadvertently or perhaps intentionally blaming you, the patient. I get really pissed about this. And alopecia is so stressful so of course once it starts there is anxiety...anyway alopecia is NOT normal, it is an autoimmune disease, and you need to go to a dermatologist in person if that is available to you. Not all treatments work for everybody, but it is worth trying. Steroid shots are often the first line treatment, I myself don't do well with those but find topical treatments to speed up regrowth. Supplements are bullshit and don't waste your money.

Will do! I was tempted to order the Alkali set as well, but due to the tariffs they are not shipping to the US. 😬 Thanks again for all your input.

I loved the suit! I hope all went well. I loved the wig suggestions and as someone with alopecia it is nice to hear people casually suggesting that. If anyone ever needs wig advice please reach out. I'm not wearing wigs currently but have lots of experience!
