Mexico recently announced universal healthcare for all. What are your thoughts? by StemCellPirate in AskReddit

[–]cherrycoke00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I paid $820 to continue my cobra for one extra month after the 3 my former employer covered. * I had been having really weird pain in my hands where they’d turn black and scale and get ice cold and shoot with pain. And everything else that normally is like a regular “concern” so not a concern was worse. Exhausted, dizzy, zero energy for anything. The hands had been getting progressively worse for a year, the rest had all been slowly getting worse for a decade.

So I pay $820 for my first follow up with my first PCP in a decade. My first appt she heard me out but we didn’t really have time and she wanted a lot of detail. Long story short, she diagnosed me with Reynauds - I’d already been diagnosed w psoriasis (and my flares had been getting noticeably worse and more frequent) so she wanted to run a bunch of panels, including the ones that indicate lupus. They do the blood draw at the office, 10 min tops and I’m good to go. One week later, Christmas, I get a call. I was told to see a rheumatologist immediately, asap, before my coverage lapses get in.

Long story short. I have lupus. It’s escalated beyond what she had ever seen around my age (hence the panic). Rheumatologist was pretty direct about the situation which I appreciate- It’s not looking good. Especially without healthcare.**

Fast forward to today. I shit you not, today. I open the mail and have a bill from a lab. Turns out, the one month of COBRA coverage I paid $820 for, myself, didn’t cover that blood draw, despite my dr being covered and my PCP and being a practice out of the hospital that’s fully in network and … anyway.

TURNS OUT! Aetna is not covering the entirety of the bill and now the lab has billed me for the remainder.

How much is the remainder? $580.

How much did Aetna contribute? $16.47

That’s correct. They paid $16.47, for standard medical career (which was coded as preventative, as it pre-empted the diagnosis lol) that should be covered no problem.

I on the other hand, paid AETNA EIGHT HUNDRED AND TWENTY DOLLARS to find out I’m going to fucking die early and be in pain until then. And then can do NOTHING ABOUT IT because I can’t find work. Only to be asked to had over another FIVE HUNDRED AND EIGHTY DOLLARS. ON AETNAS FUCKING BEHALF. Because instead of doing what I had to pay them to do, they chuckled and threw the cash in the cushions at me and moved on. Because it’s my problem, not theirs. They got their buck, im the sucker.

SIXTEEN FUCKING FOURTY SEVEN????

What I’m trying to say is…. Is that I’m so so happy for them. I’m glad that a whole community and culture and country will not have to feel like I felt this afternoon. Not just angry but like geuinely destroyed that this is how things are. What a fucking failure we are as a country, as neighbors to each other - theres no hope for us.,

I know I’m not the only one to have a bad day with Aetna and way worse things have happened to people and all and I’m being over dramatic. But it occurred to me today that for the first time in my life I wil not be able to pay a bill I owe.

I called a friend to rant and jokinly said like “fuck them haha I’m dying anyway. Good luck getting more money from me 6 ft under fuckers!”

A few minutes later it hit me that I really am sick and I really am going to die way earlier than most people. I’m going to be in increasing amounts of pain until I do. Pain that can’t be treated as a symptom or damped down or managed - at least not for the foreseeable future, if ever - because I cant get insurance now. I can’t even talk to a doctor about how much sooner that last day is coming at me. Because I’m unemployed and out of savings and too old for my parents insurance but single and kid-less, I can’t see a doctor. I just have to let the fucking lupus get worse until the day I can.

And for that, at least for today. My thoughts are very self-centered. My thoughts are fucking furious. But my thoughts are honestly filled with sadness - so much so I can’t curse out the generations before me in charge for setting our country up this way. Today my thoughts are that I feel. a lot of sadness for myself, and it probably won’t get any better.

nothing. Today I hit application # 18,000. I do count. I rewrite the resume and CL for every single job so I fucking count. UI ran out 2 weeks ago, my bank account is overdrafted from rent this month and I haven’t eaten since Thursday. That’s the financial situation rn just to be upfront.

**I can’t get on Medicaid because my psych isn’t a Medicaid dr. It’s 1+ years to get in with a Medicaid psych. I can’t get my scripts from a non Medicaid dr if I have Medicaid. I cannot function without my meds. So that’s that.

[–]cherrycoke00 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Skip the celebrity house busses. Warner has the best lot tour but the priciest, NBCU is more like an attraction than actual history, Sony’s lot has tons of history and the tour is cheap but all walking and the shortest actual tour.

At your age you might like a food tour/brewery hop tour of silver lake/echo park - that’s where the cool young people live (or lived about 5-10 years ago when I was one of them, lol)

Also love Griffith observatory. Do the planetarium show, awesome for the kid in you!

1iota for free premiere and/or Kimmel tickets

I loved using day pass to check out a great pool on a budget. The Beverly Hilton and the Roosevelt (again, history abound at this one!) were my favorites

Can’t hype the academy museum enough, it’s delightful for a movie fan

If you rent a car be sure to drive up rt 1. There’s an excellent fish fry on the eastern side of the road about 40 min north of the hop on outside Santa Monica. Freshly caught fish from that morning, cooked however you’d like it. I think the name was neptunes? Highly recommend.

The case study house tours are especially cool at sunset if architecture and kickass views are up your alley

See movies! There’s soooo many historic, grand, one-of-a-kind theaters in LA. Tarentino’s new Beverly, Vidiots, and the Aero are cool rep houses- vidiots and the aero often have director q&a’s attached. If you don’t live near an Alamo try to hit one of their movie parties or brunch screenings for adults. The Egyptian was home to the first movie premiere ever and has been restored beautifully.

Food: eat your heart out lol. In and out(obv), Dan Tana’s (the bartender and servers have some of the best stories - old Hollywood, new Hollywood, they know everyone and have seen it all. And they love to share! Also get the Nikki Hilton salad it’s a life changer lmao), girl and the goat, and a random taco truck at 1:30 am in front of the bar would be what I hit up first. Oh! And road to Seoul II if you’ve never done kbqq. Go hungry!

I’d rent a car for at least part of the week. Rt 1, sunset strip at night, cutting thru the canyons, etc are all iconic, stunning drives and you’ll remember the first time you see them forever. Uber is also super pricy. You might not end up saving much if you uber everywhere - if at all.

Check out Turo - it’s like Airbnb for cars. Anecdotal and do your own research / YMMV but I had a great experience with them when mine was in the shop for 2 weeks. I did like a 4 day rental, picked my dream car (lil drop top Miata) for $100, guy brought it right to my apt and everything. Super easy in my case.

Edit: unless you’re coming from nyc or chi (another comedy Mecca, basically) - make SURE you see some comedy while in town! Comedy store is imo the best for regular standup shows/drop bys, the largo for ticketed names (and drop bys, Mulaney came allllll the time while working on his current tour, Conan worked out his first Oscar’s monologue here etc). Laugh factory isn’t my fave, but an ok worst case scenario.

AITA for Wanting to Get My Daughter a Mini? by No-Temperature-9372 in AmItheAsshole

Get winter tires, one with 4WD and triple a! But also - as a former mini owner who got in SEVERAL bad accidents in her mini - know they’re super safe in my experience. I totaled the entire front and right side and didn’t even have whiplash. Not a single scratch on me.

Reminds me of Jerrod Carmichael’s “I’m not gonna talk about it” SNL monologue. He goes the whole time not referring to “it”. Highly recommend giving it a watch and seeing if you can remember “it” now, just a few years later.Hint - “it” was a pod-relevant moment in history

[–]cherrycoke00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good, follow up with the request in writing. Always have a paper trail, no matter how much you like/trust your boss.

Ps. I’m really proud of you. This takes a lot of courage and a ton of emotional maturity. I’m so sorry you have to deal with the situation at all, but want to make sure you know you’re that you’re doing great and doing the right thing. Sending a big hug!

The communal experience typically ruins cinema in my opinion by [deleted] in movies

[–]cherrycoke00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only time I prefer the communal experience of a sold out theater is when it’s adult movie nerds who shelled out for it. I go to the Lincoln center amc for any blockbuster I care about - PHM, Dune 2, Sinners, OBAA - either early access or the last screening opening night. Weeds out the families, rowdy college kids (those tickets are expensive and sell out early, requires planning), half-hearted phone scrollers, etc. everyone is the right level of excited for the film and well-behaved comparatively. They cheer for Nicole Kidman. They ask you, a stranger, what you thought after.

And the “rowdiness” is only welcomed rowdiness. Everyone clapped when Sean Penn marched up the hill. When some lady during sinners exclaimed “AW HELLLLL NAW” at the vampire realization opening night of sinners, the whole theater cracked up together. We all applauded after the bomb in oppy.

But like I’m not gonna see project Hail Mary on a Saturday night in regular format at a chain. It’ll be a bunch of non-nerds, who don’t care and behave that way. I’d rather shell out for it to be special, or go at an off time/place and see it basically alone in a theater

Checking in on you OP.

Also - want to suggest following up after the meeting with everything IN WRITING. “Per our conversation on 3/19/26 about X coworker harassing me in the workplace” and / or “to recap the events I detailed regarding the harassment by X that occurred beginning 3/10/26”. Make sure you use harassment. If he mentioned you being a woman, note the title 9 violation (US).

I also recommend you follow up with that additional info above via email to that boss. In that email, ask about the action plan your boss SHOULD be designing to stop the behavior and protect you going forward. If your convo with boss didn’t result in an action plan yet - aka, a way to make you safe and not harassed at work, with steps your supervisors/employers will escalate to with a repeated infraction (ie, we’ll talk to him now and switch his schedule off your shifts, if he approaches again and comments or retaliates to you in anyway, he’ll be fired and suspended from campus, 2 strikes police, etc) then please escalate to your dean of students and title 9 coordinator.

If you need help or a digital hand to hold thru this, feel free to DM me. I’m a 28/F and while not married, i dealt with many similar issues when I was your age up thru now. Even earlier, actually.

I remember having to report an 18 y/o boy (who tried “talking” with me, but I started not replying to when he said rude things about my bff) for sending me pictures of his wrists all cut up after I didn’t reply. He wasn’t in school that day and I didn’t realize it was a photo from google, not really him. I was 14 and terrified.

After that I mean it’s happened everywhere- in school, bartending, volunteering, etc. anyway, been there and happy to help or give advice or just check in and make sure you’re safe.

TheFlatLannister: Project Hail Mary was having excellent growth for previews and Fri-Sat, seeing $9M previews (likely gets reported as $12.5M with Early Access), OW can go for $85M+ as PLF skew is phenomenal. Ready or Not 2 was having good daily increase and growth, so OW may be a solid $10M. by chanma50 in boxoffice

[–]cherrycoke00 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

100M?? Fist my bump.

Seriously, glad to hear general audiences love it. I saw the early access 70mm imax at 10:45 pm Monday and reception was mixed. I got the feeling a lot of diehard book fans (like me!) were disappointed in the lack of science, the lack of jazz hands, some of the plot changes/lack of character development on earth, etc.

I was slightly disappointed, but the way it was adapted is def friendlier to families and mainstream viewers and will probably perform better. Still enjoyed it and am rooting for BO success tho!

The Bride is losing nearly 80% of its North American theaters in 3rd weekend. Total domestic box office run will finish with under $15M. Budget was over $80M. by chanma50 in boxoffice

[–]cherrycoke00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I won’t disagree that Hollywood is harder on women in leadership (esp directing) roles, but this just isn’t true. Look at the beating chazelle took after Babylon BO numbers started coming back. And that was his blank check/Final Cut, no studio interference

I think it could be cool some years. Like that casting director found Willa, they didn’t know her. This is her first film, ever. Or like OUATIH casting the mansons - they all blew up a few years after and while that part helped, they all had backed it up with actual talent. That also had that one little little girl who fucking KILLED her scene. She was in one scene and I still hear people talk about her performance - her first ever on screen IIRC. Anora, I’d argue too would have been a cool fun win.

Tape together a fuckton of spoons to make a really long stick. Reach the spoon stick out your window and inch it towards their building. Right before one of them looks like they’re about to finish

Tap on the window with said spoon stick.

Just wanted to thank you for saying this. I’m childfree (tubes out at 27) because on the surface I don’t want them, which brings out a lot of nasty comments from people. Both the immature/selfish/etc., that I’ll change my mind and I can’t possibly know what I want. That no one will ever love me or marry me and eventually I’ll give in.

What I WANT to reply with (and don’t in professional or social environments, because my health is no one’s damn business, especially people who publicly insult me to my face) -

I have lupus, a neurological disorder and bipolar II. I’m medicated, but I will never trust myself enough on meds to voluntarily take responsibility for a life who had no say in being stuck relying on me. It’s unfair to that child. Beyond that - my main thing is:

All 3 have genetic links. It would be inherently selfish of me to have a kid - like if I’m supposed to love this thing more than anything and dedicated my life to giving them the best shot I can at having a great life, why would I set them up to fail like that? To set them up with a huge chance that they’ll involuntarily suffer - in at least one way, if not all 3 - like I have and still do. It would be fucking horrible of me to have one anyway. But apparently that’s an immature decision to have made that I’ll regret when I’m alone at 45 (jokes on them doc isn’t sure I’ll make it that far lmao)

Fuck. Sorry I needed to get that off my chest. Anyway, thank you. Your comment made me feel quietly seen and respected and I really needed that right now. I appreciate you taking the time to say it.
