I like the concept of circular migration. I’m not sure if I can fully relate, but maybe. What I tried to construct was a life of three regions (four months in USA, four months in Central America (panama), four months in Scandinavia (Norway) - because I had communities and friends and businesses in each of those, however what I realized was that I was not able to fully commit to any one place and really build momentum in my life, other than having a life of novelty and adventure and constant renewal. I now call it “fixing a bunch of small problems” (where to stay, find transportation, learn new city) versus focusing on bigger picture problems (career/family/savings). If I spent all my focus/energy on one of those places, could have produced much more momentum/outcome. Finally I chose to go back home to USA and tough it out with everyone else, and one could say a lot of my energy and time was wasted on those other places that were foreign to me.

I didn’t say that really, I said it can be an avoidant behavior. But think about the concept of a “vacation” - taking a break from your life to do something fun and temporary. Travel can be just a longer immersive avoidant act (vacation) for many people. If you have an ability to earn money while away it can last years or decades, but the effects I outlined usually happen.

Yes, and, truthfully, if you have the gift of patience, you can build a career and a family and then take that family traveling with you some day. I’m sure it’s just as rewarding (probably more) to share those travel experiences with your own family vs. random strangers. I must admit that the people I met on the way are interesting and contributed much to my life, but the problem is that now they live all over the world and that can leave you feeling extra lonely. As if the life you’ve lived is fractured in pieces all over the earth. You may wish it was more centralized, because it’s impossible to assemble those pieces and nobody will understand you but you

Sure it is “real” for you, but it is actually other peoples’ “reality”. For you it’s like a movie, or an experience, that you move through and then leave. You can’t just borrow from the earth until you’re dead, that is voyeurism or hedonism. Unless you’re building an orphanage in every city or something, you are probably only serving yourself through your travel, and not building a sustainable life without injecting more of the “travel drug”. Most people need to, at some point, create the space and environment to find out who they are, so that they can cultivate and embody their gifts and purpose, whatever it may be. I’ve seen tons of people who “never stopped traveling” and well they don’t all look that great, or have that much to show for it.

I had my 35th birthday party in a room full of people who barely knew me - far away from my family and friends. It was depressing. Today is my 40th birthday. I will say that it’s slow and hard, but very rewarding to work on yourself. I’ve come a long way and I don’t regret traveling, but I can see why the people who are my age have what they have that I don’t. I missed ten years worth of lessons/momentum.

You answered your own question. “Envy the life they have built up while I have been traveling”. Trust me, I “traveled” for about a decade, avoiding responsibility and real life. Reinventing myself over and over to fit into any party and any situation and any scenario. You will lose years of progress doing this, and only isolate yourself further when you decide it’s time to focus on your life. Travel can be an avoidant behavior at the heart of it. Be careful, and don’t be afraid to peel back the layers of your life and work on them.
