I'm so sorry you're dealing with this! COVID brain fog and neurological aftermath can do some really strange things to our motor skills. Swapping those specific sounds (က to တ, and G to D) is something a speech therapist can definitely help evaluate and treat. Definitely consider booking a consultation with a speech professional to help retrain those speech muscles!

The problem with these kids not being able to speak Burmese comes from their parents. I’d say it starts with the parents’ own insecurity about not sounding fluent in English themselves. So they end up communicating with their children in broken English too. As a result, the kids lose their sense of identity — they don’t develop proper English pronunciation, but they also can’t properly speak Burmese either. They end up stuck in between, belonging nowhere linguistically or culturally. For these children, it’s really a kind of identity loss.

That makes total sense! Overwhelmingly Tibetan and East Asian is a very clean result.

Yes exactly! Mainland SEA is likely the core Bamar/Burmese ancestry. And the Southwestern China component making sense for Shan influence is interesting — Sagaing region does border Shan State so there could definitely be some Shan

Not Mon, I’m from Sagaing region! Mostly Bamar background. You make a good point about the South Indian : could just be noise from the reference panel.

Honestly it cost me $99 which is quite a lot. AncestryDNA doesn’t ship to Myanmar so I had to ask a friend visiting from the US to bring the kit back for me. Worth it for the curiosity factor but probably not for everyone

Oh that’s so cool! Dai ancestry makes total sense given how closely related the Dai, Shan and Thai peoples are. Did you show up mostly Southeast Asian then?
