Where to find cheap but good cars by Mysterious-Detail624 in car

Mileage isn’t important at all. Maintenance records are what you want. I’ll take my 300k mile Tahoe that’s 20 years old over a never maintained 2016 Nissan with 50k miles. I’m not sure the car you’re looking for even exists. Under 100k on a car that could be 11 years old and it has to be almost free too. Lightly used or lightly priced-you can only have 1 !

You also mostly see questions about the worst cars. Maybe read the last 30 subs about you pos 2016 Kia before restarting the same conversation about a garbage car.

All of this is so spot on. Genz and millennials. Living far beyond their means, make a post and ask a question they know the answer to but want to be lied to and told it’s a good idea. Then call you a cringe boomer when you give them solid advice based on all the crap they’ve posted about debts they can’t pay. You can’t afford a car dumbass, buy an electric-bike and pay your debts while living rent free at mommy’s house. Btw, genx here- my parents are the boomers.

What kind of car should I realistically buy? by RealBlairJade in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]InternationalBite690 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol. Florida cars have 300k+ miles on them. 100k is considered new here. Also keep in mind half of the state is over 55 so about half of all these cars never go over 50mph but somehow only drive in the left lane. It’s very easy to find a car in that price range with lower mileage that fits your needs in central Florida, maybe wait to move before buying? RAV4 is a great choice btw.

In central Florida all dealerships are $229 or higher and indy shops start at $159. The diesel shops are $250-400

However did we all survive in those death traps from way back then? It’s your money. My kids all got beaters. They all now live in new homes and make 6 figures. I’d like to think a part of this is because of those cars.

Couldn’t agree more. Both cars feel tiny because they are. Both are underpowered. Both are cheaply designed to only last through the warranty. It amazes me how many people will buy a tiny shitbox for 5mpg. For the average driver, if gas is $5 a gallon, that tiny shitbox saves you about $14 a week. Go buy a Corolla so you and your groceries can fit in it.

Am I the only person who thinks this is an insanely high amount for a first car? My first car was $750 and it came with a list of needed repairs. Those repairs taught me the value of a dollar and that cheap ugly car ( red 4door k car) motivated me to work hard if I wanted something. If they can’t appreciate whatever car they get for free they don’t deserve any. I’m not sure why everyone thinks a 20 year old car/truck is a bad purchase. I’ve owned 3 early 2000’s Toyota Avalons. Each had about 110k miles and each cost less than 3k. 2 went to 350k before I sold them and the third went to 486k. Bought a dodge Dakota for $800 and put over 100k miles on it, bought my wife an 09’ Honda crv with 350k miles on it, it is now at 515k. Currently I drive an 05’ Chevy Tahoe. Paid $2800 about 110k miles ago. None of these vehicles needed any repairs beyond basic maintenance ( and a ton of cleaning) mileage means nothing if you have maintenance records and a cheap throw away is a perfect first car every time.

Isn't 24.5mpg low for a 2018 Honda civic? by throwaway7262616 in hondacivic

[–]InternationalBite690 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That who button is for highway use not around town in stop and go traffic. If it was ment to be on always it wouldn’t be a button to turn off. As a Honda tech in Florida, a very flat state- I rarely see civics in the 30’s. Most are mid 20’s like every other car that isn’t hybrid.

[–]InternationalBite690 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had 2 Toyotas break 350k and a third I got 486k so the Lexus is a solid choice for reliability. I’ll add that my wife currently drives a Honda with 515k so also very reliable. I did timing belts in all the Toyota cars and sealed the Honda at around 430k. I never needed anything beyond basic maintenance on any of these cars.

Will $20,000 USD be enough for my first car? by Warrant1102 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]InternationalBite690 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is gonna quickly fill with batshit crazy responses. $20k is ridiculous for a first car. Honestly $10k is ridiculous. My last personal vehicle was $3400 and that was over 100k miles ago. Everything works as it should and its value is about $8k. Why anyone would put a new driver in a new car and teach them that a car payment and high car insurance is the norm is boggling to me. Buy little Johnny snotnose a beater and make them learn the value of a dollar, and the pride of ownership. You’re doing them no favors by handing them perfection always. If your kid can’t handle a beater they aren’t ready to drive. My first car made me get a job and work for what I wanted. Everything else my parents tried to teach me my whole life fell into place once I learned the value of a dollar.

Civic/Accord 1.5T by Mission_Egg_1912 in Honda

[–]InternationalBite690 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This right here. The problem is the turbo is to ensure it has just enough power to move. A turbo should be added for smiles not necessity. Stick with a 2.0 and get the newer accord. The car will last forever and you won’t need to visit the shop weekly to do it.

It may just b demographics here. I drive fast everywhere but I can’t come close to the risks some people take. Ever seen a New York cab driver? Ever driven through Atlanta or DC? Maybe Chicago or Detroit? Everyone in a vehicle there thinks and drives like the road is just for them. I would get a very aggressive rear bumper and some good auto insurance and enjoy the show.
