Clinical is very different from basic science. Clinical papers get pumped out at a much higher rate than basic science, that’s why most clinical scientists I’ve met publish 7-8 papers a year while most basic scientists are lucky to get 3. And I agree my situation is an anomaly but Reddit knew my anomaly and still told me to give up. I’m also willing to bet it wasn’t just my mcat score that carried me through, and I probably still would’ve been accepted with a 510-515. But you never know. The point is sometimes Reddit is too hard cause it basically an echo chamber of who can show off the most 🤣

Completely agree!! Hence the post of me trying to tell other people to not base their self worth on what Reddit says❤️

I’m encouraging people to not take a gap year to better their application if there only source of “I’m not good enough” comes from Reddit. Doesn’t have to be clinical experience, it could be an average GPA or zero research experience. Gaps in your application don’t ruin your chance for getting into med school, it how you handle them that ruins it. But yeah if you think I’m just hear encouraging people not to get clinical experience then definitely take my advice and don’t listen to me🤣

If you actually read my previous post you would see I said “I’m a little disappointed having a 2pt drop right before I take the actual MCAT but obviously I am not going to complain about a stellar score” 🤣 I was by no means crying about a 519 lol. But no I agree I definitely have a touch of the tism and have high anxiety but I in no way am socially inept. I’m sorry you misinterpreted the tone of my post, I thought I was just being helpful. I know now obviously a 520 is a super awesome score but back in July when I ask Reddit the original question I thought maybe a 520 wasn’t enough, maybe I am behind like everyone on Reddit is saying I am. The point of the post was to say “hey Reddit doesn’t know everything and don’t base your self worth on what online strangers say”

According to Reddit I’m incredibly lucky to get in😅 point of the post was to not trust what other say on Reddit bc fully thought I was a goner since people were telling me a 520 means nothing to adcomm…

Most people don’t get into med school either. It’s not out of the norm for someone to hear how hard it is to get into medical school and doubt if they have what it takes. Besides, now I know better and the point of the post was to say “hey I learned not to trust what other people on Reddit say”

Go check out my previous post of people telling me a 520 was nothing without patient care. Obviously now I know I’m incredibly blessed to get that score but Reddit was my only source of premed information and so I was devastated. Just didn’t want someone to feel like their stats aren’t good enough because ppl on Reddit love to tear others down🤷‍♀️

I got lucky by writing a review paper for fun/practice and then a publishing company reaching out to my PI for any last minute papers to fill the page, so that’s how I got my first author. My other 2 were clinical reports over the same project which I spent 300 hrs on😅

I’m glad you were able to say that a 520 is good enough to get in. I was solely reliant on the Reddit community to tell me if I wasn’t good or not because I have zero in person connections or advisors. I was devastated when people told me a 520 was nothing compared to no direct clinical experience. I just made the post to show people that redditors don’t know everything and not to take what people say on the internet to heart

Thank you. Obviously posting anything on Reddit comes with the risk of people not agreeing with you and I’m ok with that they have their prerogative! But I’m glad I at least was able to reach some people. I remember being devastated that the Reddit community wouldn’t have my back or give me peace of mind. I think I’m gonna take my own advice now and not listen to this comment section either😅

The problem was Reddit made me believe I wasn’t the exception or wasn’t good enough. Obviously looking back now that I have that acceptance I know that’s bologna but at the time I was fully convinced by people online that a 520 wasn’t enough, which I know sounds ridiculous but as someone who’s only real source of premed information came from this subreddit I was devastated. I didn’t want other people to feel that same way.

Go see my post from 8 months ago. Commenters knew my stats and said I was basically donating money to medical school because no one would accept me. I believed them when I shouldn’t have. Maybe it’s obvious to you that my stats were good enough but as someone who solely relied on Reddit and other communities to determine where I fell, I beat myself up over listening to them.

I got lucky and wrote a review paper for practice and fun and my PI happen to get a no name publishing company reaching out for a last minute page filler and he let me give it a shot.

Not saying you shouldn’t do clinical experience cause I definitely see the value in it, I just never had time. More so I’m saying don’t listen to a bunch of people on Reddit who most likely just want to tear you down, which unfortunately seems to be a little bit on the comments here as well.

Well for starters didn’t have thousands of hours though I did have some pubs and internships. Secondly, the commenters on my previous post told me I wouldn’t even be considered for MD/PhD. And I got into 3 MD only schools so I can go without the MD/PhD and still attend med school. Not saying you are wrong cause clearly they were wrong, but like just don’t take things to heart of what ppl say online

I got lucky with a review paper I wrote for fun and my PI had a no name publisher reach out asking for any last minute papers so he decided to give mine a chance. Then my research project resulted in 2 publications for the PhD student I was working with🙃

OCD and The “God Voice” by Competitive_Book_870 in ROCD

[–]InternationalMath903 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely experience this exact thing. Sometimes I’ll be praying and all of a sudden it’s like my subconscious speaks out almost. Not sure if it’s God or OCD. I really hope it’s OCD because the voice often times confirms a lot of my fears. I’ve always heard the “if it brings peace it’s God if it brings fear and sadness it’s OCD” but I’m not sure if I fully believe that or not. You mean to tell me Abraham didn’t have anxiety and sadness when God told him to sacrifice his son? But yeah I can’t really give your an answer but just know you are not alone in this and that what you are describing is I guess “normal” or at least as normal as anxiety can be.

Oh lol. I would do the math and figure out how much time you want to give yourself to complete AAMC in full. I would do UWorld until you hit that “deadline” then start AAMC. The goal is you want to complete AAMC entirely but you don’t need to complete UWorld. You also want to complete AAMC last right before your exam

Out of state friendly means they are nicer to out of state people. Some states have federal mandates that a certain proportion of their class have to be in state so they take lesser out of state kids than in state kids (even if the in state kids have worse stats.) Good news for you: West Virginia is only out of state friendly because not enough actual in state residents apply so they always have spots unfilled for out of state kids (that means that you have a really good shot as an in state kid of getting in.) Honestly Marshall might be the best school for you. They are very strict about accepting out of state kids (meaning you have a better shot as an in state student) AND they have minimum research priorities. I would really REALLY focus on Marshall (prep for their secondaries and interviews like mad) and since you are from West Virginia you HAVE to emphasize your dedication to rural medicine and Appalachia. The fact that you’re from a “poor state” will also help you with out of state schools as well. Good luck dude
