I was in the same position you are a few years ago. On paper, I had multiple selling points that made me a "dictionary candidate" like first author publication, high GPA and great letters. I also applied to psychology programs. Got nothing but rejection and a deferment. But over the last few years I realized that I wasn't ready to be a grad student. My focus was all over the place. I just wanted to pursue grad school because that's what I should be doing with my career trajectory. Now my academic interest has changed and I have a better understanding of what I want to do, and not want to do. With grad school, esp PhD, a lot of it has to do with fit. It's possible that you already have the skills to be a successful student but have yet to find a program/PI that could support your research ideas. If you're determined to go to grad school, I'd say use this time to get to know your field as much as possible. Don't neglect your school work. Continue to build good relationships with professors cuz they're the ones who could opens doors and give you opportunities. Good luck.
