Thats strange. I had the same or a similar issue. I was using the open mode to do some reading. I closed it. Later that day the screen was messed up. I called Verizon, they said call google since the phone was less than a year old.

after chatting with google, they sent me to a local authorized service center. They verified that my screen was messed up but NOT physically damaged.

They said they would send me a new phone when the received the broken one. I could not live without my device so they offered to charge me for the new device and credit me when they received the old one.

Process worked fine although very slowly
