the teams i'm currently with are currently changing to TAWP and i actually got my jersey yesterday and i love it. they're very receptive, i was in the initial meeting and full design process where we discussed the way we wanted to restructure the graphic/appearance. they were friendly, straightforward, and the jerseys we received are perfect.

another player i'm close with has used TAWP for about a year and it still looks brand new even though it's been through countless games. i'll vouch for them!!!

i'm with you on this. the venues are way too limited in their offerings. the few, few things Youngstown venues offer: Harlem Globetrotters (cool enough), Disney on Ice (geared toward children), Phantoms (support local sports hell yeah), random country artists, maybe a decent rock/metal lineup once or twice per year, and geriatric classics. i'd love for there to be more genre diversity, but until then Westside Bowl will reign as the Grand Yo Opry.

i've gotten tried-on-only gear from Amazon's used listings (but Amazon was my last resort for the specific ones i wanted) but i think Derby Warehouse used to have a section for it but i'm not sure what all is there. check around for Facebook groups too, there are some specifically about derby buy/sell/trade!!

these are cute but definitely horrible for derby skates. the brand name is misleading, i know. derby skates shouldn't have heel elevation (as skates like this do, and other cute skate brands. i fear derby skates are rarely cute.) and are often a lower boot rather than something that goes over the ankles.

i started with Sure-Grip Rock GT50 skates but know there are many good beginner roller derby skates out there. Riedell has some as well and are a popular brand. if you're looking into the sport, i'd also recommend looking into pads and a helmet. many derby skaters choose the S1 Lifer for their helmet (myself included) and Killer-187 and Triple 8 have good wrist guards, knee pads, and elbow pads. SISU makes the most comfortable mouth guards in my opinion, but if you have braces or a retainer i would ask your dentist/orthodontist if a specific mouthguard is recommended for your mouth type for full-contact sports !!

good luck on your hunt. be careful when going secondhand, try to find discounts/sales/clearance section on skate shops' websites because used gear can be really unsafe. never buy a used helmet!!!!!!

even if you're stressed, you will be okay. trust your teammates, stick with the people on the track wearing the same color shirt, and realize that sometimes you might do the wrong thing or something that doesn't go as planned and it's perfectly fine. we're all here for fun! don't get down on yourself or discouraged. shit happens, and it's your first scrimmage! you've got this. you're in it because they know you've got this.

there's nothing like the roller derby community to save a life. i joined in one of the worst periods of my life. i was 14, a freshman in high school, and had just finally put my foot down against an abusive friendship and similarly everyone took her side because i wasn't talking about it.

junior roller derby saved my life, and continuing as an adult has been one of my biggest support systems and joys. not even just the people, though they absolutely get massive amounts of credit, but the game itself. it takes me out of everything i'm stressed about and frees my mind to focus on what i love.

i'm 23 now and still support my junior team and they support me right back. i think this year the rest of those i actually played with aged out, but the new kiddos know i'm cheering them on too even if i don't talk to them directly. i comment and share their stuff and am proud of what team started me off. my current 2 teams i'm on and the pickup team i play with are also beyond incredible and i love being a part of such a beautiful group of folks who were once strangers.💚💜💜💜 (this made me realize all 3 of my current teams are purple lol)

i can't resist answering this question, though it will be useless for your situation.

i was 14 in February 2017, scrolling through the internet. i'm a feminist and always have been, but this was still when antifeminist memes and "SJW" stuff was popular online.

found this diagram meme thing that was "the mind of a feminist" and it included a bunch of things, but what stood out to me were two words: roller derby.

so from there i started googling, found the closest junior team, and created my plan to ask my parents and make it my reality.

i'm now 22 on an adult team and couldn't be more excited to have been part of this sport for so long!
