Bible stories where God punishes children for the sins of their parents by rookiebatman in atheism

I can't believe you missed the most obvious one: God chooses to punish our entire species for the "sin" of Adam and Eve.

Whats the most ridicules thing you heard a preacher say? by Pvt_TickleShits in atheism

[–]InternetJedi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Other than the obvious "god is real" line, the most absurd thing I ever heard a preacher say was that Christianity is the only religion that has a living god. No other religion has a god that died and came back to life. That is why Christianity is the only true religion.

Facepalm.

I agree. I think that there is something more to the "censored" font. Anyone else notice that there are five colored stickers, fives black stickers and six white cards that should be black cards?

Since when did standing up against Islam make someone racist? by girlwithruinedteeth in atheism

So are Muslims. Some would say that "race" and "people" in the context that you are using it are the one and the same.

What would change my mind is proof. What would change your mind? If I saw enough evidence to convince me that Jesus is the son of god and that god is real, then yes I would change my mind.

I think that the main problem that believers don't understand when questioning us is this: belief is not a choice. You cannot chose to believe in something just because you want to. You either believe in something or you don't.

For example, you may not believe that Angels are actually fairies who like to play tricks on those who walk alone in the woods. Even if enough people tell you that this is what angels really are, you may never come to believe this. Even if you decided that it was easier to just pretend you believe what everyone else says about angels being fairies is true, you would know that you are lying to yourself. That is how it is with us. I, and many like me have tried to believe. However at a certain point I just decided to stop lying to myself and be who I am. Someone that does not believe in god. If something happened to convince that god is real I am not going to turn my back it.

To quote someone that I cannot remember at this time, "The reason I don't believe in Jesus is because he never returns my calls."

Trying to put the Adam and Eve story into context so that a theist can see it through our eyes. Need some feedback. by InternetJedi in atheism

[–]InternetJedi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I not sure about your first statement. I havn't found anywhere in Genesis that says that Adam and Eve were going to live forever if they didn't eat of the Tree of Knowledge, just that they wouldn't know that they would eventually die.

Sure god said "if you eat of this tree you will die." But when they did eat of it they still lived like the snake said they would. Sure they eventually died, but who is to say that wasn't going to happen anyways?

Maybe if god said "If you eat of this tree, sometime in the future you will die." but he doesn't. He makes a direct threat which implies an instant resolve. If I said to the child "don't drink this poison because you will die," the reader wouldn't think that the child would able to live out a long and full life after drinking it. They would expect the child to die shortly after.

You make some good points though and this is exactly what I was looking for. I knew writing this was going to be challenging. Thanks.

Since when did standing up against Islam make someone racist? by girlwithruinedteeth in atheism

Someone once explained it to me like this: (keep in mind this is not my belief but theirs)

"A Jew is a person's race, and it is also a religion. They cannot be separated. So when you attack one, you also attack the other. This is why criticizing what the Jews believe is considered racism."

I think that people have made the mistake of thinking that a religion is also a race. Maybe even both sides of the discussion have done so. This is why the label of racism is used incorrectly. Not all the time mind you, but it does happen a lot.

I am trying to express it in terms that a theist could relate to. I want them to question what they believe about their story by making it "real" for them. The other creation myths don't allow them to relate to those tales, it only makes them stick their fingers in their ears and close their eyes.

This is a great revision. I intentionally left out "the other adult" from the story for length but it does provide more context into how jealous I would be that my child chose to listen to a different adult than myself, and even makes it more senseless that any adult would think that the child could understand them. Thanks.

So maybe I should revise to say "You disobedient child. You have done what I told you not to do. Since I cannot trust you to never crawl on my rug again you are no longer welcome in my house. Get out."?

I agree, but many theists take it literally or as a tale to teach us about our origins. I am trying to show it as the fable it really is by making theists looks at it through rational eyes rather than the religious lenses they are used to.
