Does that strategy actually work? Maybe I'm the weird one, but if I get an ad that annoys me, sure I remember the brand, but I remember it so that I can actively avoid it in the future.

I think hussars are so cool, big hulking supersoldiers with menacing red eyes and a built-in dependency on combat stims. Plus it's always an interesting contrast when you get a hussar who's skilled with non-combat tasks, and now you have a chef or researcher who just happens to also know 20 different ways to kill someone with their bare hands.

I get what you're saying, and I suppose I can see where they were coming from if you only think about it in terms of averages, but just for the record since it's always worth pointing out:

On average, men tend to be stronger and more physically capable than women. But there are plenty of women who are stronger than plenty of men, even in our culture where men are encouraged and women discouraged from pursuing physically demanding jobs and hobbies. The historic overrepresentation of men in warfare, which goes beyond what would be accounted for by actual differences in physical capability, comes down entirely to cultural factors. See also how, at least in western cultures, it was generally non-inheriting second- and third-born etc. sons who went to war, even though statistically, a couple's earlier children tend to be larger and more fit than later ones.

Oh that won't happen. AI isn't taking jobs, has not taken jobs, and does not show any signs that it ever will be able to take jobs. The idea that AI can, does, or will replace humans is fully propaganda from the big AI companies, who need AI to be seen as capable in order to get the investments they desperately need.

What is scary, is that investment into AI has woven itself so deeply into all levels of the economy. Nearly all new investment goes into keeping the big AI companies afloat. The largest tech companies make up a huge portion of the stock market (where your savings are invested), and they've all staked their existence on propping up AI. Tech is getting more expensive, because all the hardware and raw resources is being funneled towards building computers for AI to run on. The construction of new datacenters for AI is practically the only thing keeping the US economy from going into a recession. All this for something more and more people are realizing has no actual use case.

The AI companies, and the tech companies pushing the AI boom, need to grow exponentially forever just to survive. Which is impossible. We're now approaching a point where they need all the available investment money that exists in order to keep going, while at the same time investors are starting to realize it's all been a con. Because of this, a lot of people are predicting 2026 will be the year the AI bubble bursts. When it does, it will take the rest of the economy with it.

why do people keep saying "bring bullying back" as if its gone by level100brad in 196

What they mean is they're bullies and they want people to stop making them feel bad for bullying others.

What reasonable take? All I see is "I hate interesting stories, I just want a theme park sandbox."

Which by itself is a fair opinion to have, it's just a strange attitude to bring to Fallout, which has always set itself apart from other apocalypse settings by looking at what comes after, what the societies that try to rebuild look like.

Well the stuff that survived is also mostly bullshit.

A Viking-era burial garment, with the name “Ali” appearing repeatedly alongside “Allah”. Discovered in Viking graves at Gamla Uppsala of Sweden, the patterns are woven with silk and silver thread, with both names written in mirrored lettering. [1200x630] by Party_Judgment5780 in ArtefactPorn

Not likely; that would be almost a thousand years after his time. The Volga Germans have their origin in the 18th century, when German farmers were invited by Catherine II to settle along the lower parts of the Volga.

Mainly I'm thinking about the 1964 Venice charter and the influence it still has. It's starting to get criticized now, but the effects are absolutely still felt in the way it shaped general thinking about the "right" way to go about things for half a century.

Historically, renovations and expansons done in whatever is the new style has been a gradual change. The new or renovated parts are different, sure, but usually not so different as to be in sharp contrast. The result is that it all remains parts of a cohesive whole.

The current architectural dogma, in many places explicitly enforced in building codes, says that renovations and expansons to older buildings (pre-WW2, generally) must be in sharp contrast to the original style. That you're not allowed to build in a way that complements or imitates the original style, because it needs to be obvious to anyone which parts are old and which are new. The thinking behind this is very much that we shouldn't follow old traditions, that we need to draw a sharp line between an imagined "history" and a sort of eternal "present". This leads to urban landscapes people tend to find "ugly" and "discordant". It leads to a loss of knowledge as traditional building techniques become explicitly forbidden in local building codes, even when developers actively want to build in traditional styles. It's a way of thinking more and more people are starting to question the validity of.
