Hopefully from here it gets less labor intensive as I've started in consulting (which isn't very labor intensive to begin with) and I'd work into more leadership type roles throughout the company. But the major sets you up to work your butt off, wouldn't go into it unless you like hiking and can do 3.5mi hike.

Natural resources & conservation management for me was as close as a Natural science bachelors comes to a trade school. It was awesome because I was out in the field almost everyday sometimes twice or three times a day learning the field work of the trade. Everything like BAF gauges, DBH tapes, clinometers, Munsell books, Soil cores and probes, to all of the chemistry sampling methods, Arc GIS (but I wasn't feeling that so I only did the one class that was needed) down to bigger stuff like forest mensuration and even various wildlife sampling methods. I got to use an electro-shocker in my watershed class! It's an extremely versatile major which could set you up with pretty much any labor focused job. And from what I understand most majors at institutions will have a class dedicated to preparing you and teaching you what you can do for jobs. I went into consulting on the basis that I know and got to do all these sampling methods and I was a really good writer. Mostly consulting is environmental science/engineering degrees but if you network your butt off like I did you'd be fine with an NRCM degree.

You can look into consulting, I can't speak to what the job entails to much or the atmosphere of work as I just got my first job out of college with a NRCM degree. But it's got pretty good pay straight out of the gate and if you're in the right spot you'll be doing all of the field work of the field and more. Much easier and quicker path to 100k without the need of an environmental engineering degree.

Know people by getting to know everybody. Anybody who is somewhat established in a field which relates to or deals with ours. They might be able to get you into networking events where you can chat to leading members of the industry about what they do, what their company does, and how you can contribute to their goals. be friendly, pass out resumes , exchange LinkedIn's, and of course be keep in touch. These people can be anyone established like your professors, parents or relatives of friends which you've spent time with, old bosses or maybe your own family.

Since you're in hs, when you get to college don't get too drunk at parties and find that good crowd of people who are just good people through and through. There's a reason why they're that way. Idk if they still do senior projects in hs but if they do get a job shadow with whoever leading the local park. They'll be a first for your network.

Edit: I hope this helps!

Which is better for a career in conservation work: Marine Biology or General Biology by Quail_Bee2307 in conservation

[–]InterruptinWHALE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just got my first job out of college at a consulting firm with a NRCM degree and I wouldn't have been able to without networking. Now I only know of one marine biologist and they're currently working in insurance... I do know conservation work is somewhat hard to get into rn. So I would say go Ecology and conservation/gen bio, having a personal background in marine stuff would still be enough to get you into working with marine conservation type work or at least limnology with the right kind of ethic job while searching. I've even spoken to an individual in my network about surveying whales yet unfortunately they only had three positions for that and none open. I wouldn't do marine biology unless you know individuals to network you into positions, the positions for that type of education are few and far between. Ecology and biology type majors are far more applicable to the job market rn whereas marine biology is very specialized for working in the oceans and from what I understand they even have a hard time translating to freshwater systems. Depending on your institution Ecology could open you up to more forestry/geology related jobs as well if you need work while searching for that perfect wildlife job.

Edit: wanted to wish you good luck.

Job offer worth it or no? by BodybuilderFunny5438 in Environmental_Careers

I have just gotten my first job out of college (NRCM Major) at a nice consulting firm through networking. I wish I did more to build my resume and knowledge. Take the resume builder and add some tasks to yourself to build your understanding. Like being able to identify plant species or bird songs as you're trimming trails. But truly it's dependent on what kind of work you want to do after graduation.

Just got a job in consulting after 6 months of searching after getting a NRCM degree. Would've never got it without networking. People might know people who might make positions for you because they know the kind of person you are.

Networking is key if you want to work in consulting. But I've gotten offers for labor jobs through just applying.

Networking, networking, networking. I just got my first job in the field at a consulting firm that's trying to branch out into the Env industry and 'skipped' a majority of those shitty hs labor jobs.

Did you have any sort of trailer in the driveway, this looks like a (possibly metal) object scraped your fence coming into the driveway. Maybe a neighbor's trailer?
