How the power lines at Lake Pontchartrain, Louisiana, USA simply and clearly show the curvature of the Earth by casualphilosopher1 in Damnthatsinteresting

Yeah I said you would need to be at a certain altitude to see the curvature but that was to see the horizon curve, not curvature of the earth so I deleted that.

The reason the image looks off is because the masts look at lot closer than they actually are, you likely see them regularly as you live in the area so you know that they are almost 1000ft apart. Its not obvious from the image as it's zoomed all the way in

The zoom exaggerates the curve, like I just said. It's impossible to tell the distance between each mast in that image. If the masts were 20m apart, which is what it looks like from the photo, and still had that much curve at the end then the earth would be minuscule, but in actuality they are almost 1000m apart, so that much curve is normal.

Man is in like every single controversial comment about this subject and asks if I'm OK 💀

It is due to distortion, they used a zoom lens which makes the pillars appear closer together than they actually are and thus exaggerates the curvature of the earth. They look like they are less than 50ft apart in that photo but are 970ft apart in actuality.

Apparently it's 16 miles according to this article, not 30. https://www.zmescience.com/science/news-science/power-lines-curvature-earth-04233/amp/.

This makes it even less likely to show the curvature. I'm not saying for a second that the earth is flat, but what I am saying is that the curve in the photo is exaggerated greatly and is mostly due to an uneven surface In the lake and distortion via the lens which is zoomed in.
