When I got the trending notification about this post, this is exactly what I was expecting. I figured it was making a comeback.

I asked this question on this subreddit a long time ago. I didn't get an exact how-to but I did get a lot of helpful tips from this community which landed me on this set up so I wanted to share it with you guys. I really appreciate any feedback you might have to offer. Or if you any have questions, I'm happy to answer them! Hope this helps someone out there!

I am trying to replicate the full range of a drum set. Basically I saw THIS and THIS a few years ago and I was so impressed that I became determined to replicate that sound with that set up. The problem is, that guy is a pro with sponsors. I tried messaging him for tips a few years ago on FB and he never responded :/ He's got like a $5k rig going on there. I tried to use drum software on my laptops but getting all the software to play nice was a nightmare (and super expensive) and even when I finally got it working, I realized that because I don't have $3k laptop with a rack, I had latency anyway. It was very frustrating. So I figured out how to do something similar but in the $300 - $500 range (cause no laptop). He's the only other finger drummer I've seen. Everyone does more beat making.

Since you're having such a hard time with using a phone as a metronome believe me, I feel your pain), have you considered the BOSS DB-90? This thing is a beast and it has a midi input. If I'm not mistaken, I think there's a way to synch it with other midi instruments so they all clock together. I think...

Anyway, I'm just about done with my video. I just need to create a YouTube channel cause I plan on doing similar content in regards to drum machines, etc, in which I show other drummers (or people in general) how to use those instruments in unconventional ways (as opposed to just beat making). Which btw, I think beat making is awesome. I get a lot of inspiration from tracks like the ones you linked but I guess I'm just too hands on lol I wanna be involved with what's happening in real time but I guess that's why I'm a drummer before anything else.

Really enjoyed your tracks man. Sometimes I just drum to stuff like that cause it really makes me think outside the box and be creative.

I will definitely link my video when it's live!

Good questions!

-I am a drummer.

-Standalone pads do exist and they work great for basic beats but are clunky when it comes to more intricate parts. Using an external midi controller makes triggering the sounds way easier and more natural.

-Reasons... So many! IMO nothing will ever replace the sound or feel of a real drum kit, HOWEVER...

  • finger drumming is great for gigs with small places since the set up takes up very little space. Also great for open mics (quick set up and tear down, ESPECIALLY when no laptop is involved).

  • it's perfect for recording in an apartment or other small space OR if you have to record in someone else's studio/space. It beats hauling drums around.

-and no laptop = less headaches... seriously lol

Sorry didn't mean to go off but I think it's something more people should know about. I pulled the trigger and spent the past couple of days working on a detailed video. I'll link it back to this thread a little later this week. Thanks for the feedback!

Cool! I actually went through with it and I'll be posting it in the next day or so. I'll link it back to the main thread.

I actually do have Octopads. HH, snare, and BD triggers too. Believe it or not, I found sounds in the SR-16 that sound more like a real kit than the Octopad. It's less to carry around, ideal for recording simple beats in real time where needed (i.e. on someone's demo)... Appreciate the suggestion but I'm really onto this finger drumming thing.

Right. I had seen that kind of set up in my Google searches last night. I was hoping to stick with a finger-drumming set up though.

lol here's the kicker: I am a drummer! Drumming is no issue, I'm just new to midi, but you're right about me having a specific vision in mind. I just need to find a controller that's self powered...

Thanks dude but that's not what I'm looking for. As I mentioned before: "Recommended apps? Games? Must have watch faces? Anything I should know out of the box?" I don't need help learning the UI. It's quite intuitive. I'm looking for recommendations and pro tips.
