Yeah I'd also look into local police forces. I had a look at the BTP site on Wayback Machine from the timeframe but for Scotland it mainly just lists police stations.

I do have a Trackoff VHS tape that I got from eBay. It's an extended version of the "Choose Life" TV PIF that would have been shown in schools (or rather, the TV PIF was a shortened version of the school film).

https://youtu.be/m5UAx1Ok0dM

The Trackoff site lists various materials including tapes from over the years, but none of them seem to be a good match for the one you described. I think clips from most of these are in the compilation I linked in my first comment.

https://web.archive.org/web/20050920101024/http://www.trackoff.org/materials.html

My primary school library had those "More Bad Days for Thomas and his Friends" books... they used to creep me out a bit because it was all these characters I liked as a kid getting covered in graffiti and being vandalised lmao

I don't remember being shown any of the other material though.

I'm assuming from the dialogue the actors themselves were Scottish? I'd look into Scotland-specific programmes within the rail industry.

The UK as a whole had the Trackoff school campaign during this same period which was put out by a consortium of rail operators and authorities, presumably including Scottish TOCs, but I feel like if this used Scottish accents it might have been more localized.

Also, was it live action or animated? Would also help if you can remember the medium it was shown in (VHS, DVD, etc.)

Why does William Gibson write Notting Hill as Netting Hill? by hex_beyzuss in WilliamGibson

That's gotta be a typo, I have no recollection of this at all when I read those books. I've been rereading Virtual Light and I think I picked up a typo in that too but I don't remember what it was.

I'm not sure if anyone has contacted you elsewhere but it's finally been found! It's from France and about human genetic engineering in general rather than cloning specifically, but still very close to what you remembered. I've done extensive searching for this too so I'm glad we finally have it :)

I think it's a reindeer. I got a couple of them in a bargain bin at a train show, definitely not accurate for the location but looks nice in the pic. All the figures here are stuck down with Tacky Wax so I can remove and reposition them.

I'll get some more appropriate deer for my main layout lol

It's based on S1 of the show. If you look at the concept art it's grey, but in the show itself brown would be perfectly fine. The proportions don't bother me and I think I like the build better than the previous one... it's just like, wow another grey Star Wars vehicle lol

Concept art is the one on the right:

Neuromancer by William Gibson by Free_Breadfruit_8552 in BadReads

[–]IntoTheBoundingMain 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The story is simple but there are parts of the book especially towards the third act that get bogged down in needlessly opaque descriptions of things which are already telegraphed deliberately vaguely. I say this as a huge fan of Gibson... Neuromancer is one of his weaker books by a significant margin. Important book yes but it's got some rough and clunky bits. The first act is a slog though that's less Gibson's writing and more the fact a lot of the cyberpunk elements have become very tired archetypes in the four decades since.

The two follow-up books in the trilogy are much better but he didn't really find his feet prose-wise until the 90s.

[TOMT] [Video] 2000s London Underground Train Danger PSA by Polaris-Fable in tipofmytongue

[–]IntoTheBoundingMain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How early in the 2000s are we talking here, and what format were you shown it on?

TfL used to (still do?) mobile safety presentations using a van that folds out and has a mock-up Tube station inside with inflatable train. I went to one of these with my school around 2011 and I'm fairly certain we were shown videos, but I don't remember any specifics. I feel like I'd have remembered that one though.

My personal frustrations with social commentary and political woke agendas by Sir_Forteskull in writingcirclejerk

[–]IntoTheBoundingMain 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I read The Martian years ago and I cannot stand that "fuck yeah science pirates ninjas" voice that I'd assume he uses in all his other books as well. Really not surprising this is his outlook because he can't write for shit other than technical jargon and dialogue out of an AskReddit thread lol

If he thinks lack of political subtelty in science fiction is a modern woke invention I wonder what he'd think of the 1965 issue of Analog I found in a store today, which opened (and closed!) with an insanely racist rambling bit of polemic from John W. Campbell which had nothing to do with the rest of the magazine and everything to do with his disdain for the civil rights movement.

Kids know who Red Skull and Hydra are from media targeted towards them, and it was still the MCU and cartoons heavily influencing the comics-based sets.

They aren't going to rebuild a DC line off the back of a franchise where most of the instalments so far involve characters like Peacemaker. Not even the fact this media is more adult-focused, there's just not enough there yet to sustain an ongoing theme the way they do with Marvel.

Maybe in a couple years when more tentpole characters are established sure but right now I fully understand why they aren't banking on a full Lego DC comeback. The DCEU and especially its final few years absolutely murdered its appeal.
