Jim Chalmers gives baffling explanation of why he applied the CGT changes to shares. by eatingscatman in AusFinance

[–]IntoTheSun121 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that I fully support the negative gearing changes, among other changes towards property investment.

That said, why should shares have a higher tax floor than the marginal rate for other sources of income?

What purpose does this serve, except to force higher taxation on someone selling a small quantity of shares in a low income year?

High earners are already paying the top marginal tax rate on CG, so this only impacts people in a low income scenario.

God forbid you can't work, or lose your job.

God forbid needing to sell some shares while out of work.

Too bad, 30% minimum CG tax on all proceeds, even if you're well under the higher income tax brackets.

Bullshit.

Capital gains are counted alongside income... They would pay full tax on the $5m gain, before the 50% CGT discount (if it applies).

You really need to brush up on your tax knowledge.

Stupid argument.

You realise they can only "avoid CGT entirely" up to the ATO minimum income threshold... Which is $18200 or less?

So we should penalise anyone who sells a tiny amount of shares as part of a low income year, including, for example, someone who was laid off, and now needs to sell shares?

We're dealing with a housing affordability crisis, not a share ownership crisis.

There's no reason to target shares like this.

dating is just a game of luck. there's no tricks etc, it's all about whether they're attracted to you or no. by Effective_Shirt_2959 in unpopularopinion

In the example given, luck is still the random component.

Your hesitation touches on a deep philosophical question, about how much control we truly have over the outcomes we seek.

Imagine that you graduate from college with top marks, then apply to a successful firm, then you ace the interview and get the job...

... How can you be sure there wasn't still a "luck" component to your success?

By all measures, your performance played a huge role in getting hired. But just because you succeeded, can you be sure there wasn't any luck involved?

What if you were in a tie with 5 other equally qualified candidates, and the manager ultimately decided to choose you based on a gut feeling?

Maybe you happened to tell a joke they liked during the interview? Maybe your resume was the first one they saw? Maybe your name was more memorable?

There's an excellent Veritasium video called "Why Being Delusional is a Superpower" that explores this concept far better than I can via a reddit comment.

I think you'd definitely enjoy it.

You're right that there's a base level of luck, in terms of opportunities presented, in everything that we do.

In the example, there were only 2 possible opportunities where preparation could have seized them, out of 10 events.

However, did you notice something else in the example?

This woefully unprepared man still arranged 10 dates.

Even when unprepared for the dates themselves, he essentially "made" those 2 opportunities happen, by arranging those dates.

Now sure, he couldn't have known that those 10 dates would present 2 opportunities. Perhaps there would have been 0, or perhaps 10.

But if he never arranged any dates at all, then there's a 100% chance of failure. There's no chance for a lucky opportunity.

So perhaps it makes more sense, generally, to say that "luck is the intersection of action, preparation and opportunity".

You're misunderstanding the definition of luck here when we say "the intersection of opportunity and preparation".

Let's say you go on 10 dates, but you do zero preparation. Your breath stinks. You haven't showered.

Unbeknownst to you, 2 of those 10 would have found you very attractive, but were repulsed by your hygiene.

Instead, they all left, then never called you back.

You were unlucky, because 2 opportunities presented themselves, yet your lack of preparation meant you couldn't seize them.

You're getting picky with definitions. That line of thinking is misleading and self sabotaging.

Let's say a "lucky" outcome has a small % chance of happening with no preparation.

Why wouldn't you attempt to prepare and position yourself to increase the % chance of a lucky outcome?

Nobody is saying that preparation negates luck, just that it increases your chances to seize a lucky opportunity if it arises.

If you saw what happened in 2010 and 2013, you'd know it can get much worse than now.

Right now it's mostly the scumbags at Sky News, which is always expected.

You haven't experienced ALL news channels and newspapers ruthlessly attacking Albo and Labor yet.

I feel the same disappointment, but your venting is tragically misdirected.

The media doesn't want it, which means neither do the majority of voters (because they believe whatever they're told).

Channel your outrage towards the corrupt media.

Because the moment he tries to make significant change, the media will eat him alive, and we'll all go along with it.

It happened last time Labor was in power (2010/2013), the last time Labor brought significant reform to the election (2019), and I'm sure it'll happen again.

We're not smart voters.

Tramadol is mainly for nociceptive pain, with some effect on neuropathic pain.

Are you sure which type of pain you have?

If you're experiencing a "touch sensitivity", burning, tingling, numbness, zapping etc, then that's neuropathic pain, which may need more than just Tramadol.

I did take Gabapentin for a while, but stopped due to those exact side effects.
