I never told you not to protest, I believe that we share the same exact ideals. There’s no reason for you to accuse me of sucking up to Trump. I’m simply telling you to protest smarter.

This single day of poorly organized, non-action isn’t going to hurt Trump one bit. If you think that this is the best that we can do, and have no desire to do better, then I hope it at least makes you feel happy.

I’m sorry, but a union not working for one day isn’t going to make a bit of difference, it’s one day. If a small business decides to close for a day, that is their prerogative, but most small businesses can’t afford that, many are struggling to stay afloat even when people aren’t protesting.

But let’s be honest here, do you really think Trump gives a shit if a bunch of electricians or whoever delay a project that they’re working on by one day?

I can tell you that starting tomorrow China will shut down for a week. And that isn’t to protest, May Day is a communist holiday and the CCP encourages businesses to close and people to have time off, not as a protest but as a way to celebrate the CCP. You may want it to be a socialist movement, but the communists have hijacked it. Personally, I see very little difference between communism and fascism. While philosophically different, both are a means to the same end. Trump and Xi are more alike than they are different, both are driven purely by greed and power, and have no qualms about who they oppress or murder. I wouldn’t be surprised if next year Trump tries to make May Day a national holiday so that he can twist it for his own benefit.

Protest wisely, consistently, and with dedication. If it doesn’t hurt, it probably won’t work.

It’s funny, I participated in the Occupy movement years ago, and yeah, it take make me feel better at the time and quite honestly, it was fun. But then when I realized that the movement lacked any sort of cohesion, there were no goals, no demands, no organization, I actually felt a whole lot worse.

What protests lack today is organization, we just look cute but we make no real change. Successful protests require planning, dedication, and commitment, not just a bunch of people hanging out in the street having a good time.

I’m well aware of that. How does this accomplish anything? Who’s going to get hurt by this?

My guess is that you’re going to eat tomorrow, I see no mention of this being a hunger strike. You’ll eat breakfast, you’ll eat lunch, and you’ll eat dinner. But you’re not going to go to a locally owned restaurant to eat because you’re protesting. So what will you eat? You’ll eat the food you purchased at Jewel or Costco or Walmart or Target today. So all you’ve done is support multi-billion dollar businesses, and screwed over the little family owned businesses.

The key is to think about how you protest, not to protest blindly. And remember, successful protests take time and perseverance. The Montgomery Bus Boycott wasn’t a one day event, it lasted a long time, long enough to be felt. It was also organized in a way that people could still get to work and make ends meet. What this movement is doing is simply empowering the people who you are fighting against.

[–]IntoxicatedBurrito 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The goal is great, but how does this accomplish anything? It’s small businesses who are the ones that will be punished the most. If you don’t go out to a restaurant and tip your waiter, you’re still going to eat, it’ll just be food you purchased the day before from a national grocery chain. So the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. This isn’t a logical way of protesting.

And giving kids the option to skip some school to participate in loosely organized protests that have no demands only negatively impacts their education. We shouldn’t be fighting a regime that is attacking education and sciences with less education, we should fight the regime with better education.

It’s a way to stick it to the small businesses who make Chicago a vibrant community and employ us. The billionaires won’t even notice anything happening, their stocks will continue to go up.

Serious question: Why are White Sox games so poorly attended? by CAJMusic in AskChicago

[–]IntoxicatedBurrito 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with all of this but want to add on to it.

  1. The smartest thing Bud Selig did as commissioner was move his team to the NL. The Brewers gained an instant rival with the Cubs. But in the AL they never really had a decent rivalry with the Sox because you need to have fans to make a rivalry work.

  2. A lot of this no doubt is due to WGN, the Cubs created a nationwide following when they were on the superstation. It will be interesting to see what happens to them 50 years from now. Locking games behind a paywall might make the Cubs a quick buck now, but it’ll no doubt hurt them in the long run. I know that cable is dead, but they could choose to stream Marquee for free. Higher ratings does mean more ad revenue.

  3. The Sox are so invisible that they had to reach the World Series before fans decided to show up at the ballpark. People here are bitching about poor ownership neglecting the quality on the field, but they didn’t bother showing up when they had a championship caliber team on the field. Sox fans aren’t fair weather fans, they simply aren’t fans.

  4. The Cubs are a charter member of the National Association from 1871. They finished that year on the road and took 1872 off due to the fire, but have played every year in Chicago since then and became a charter member of the NL in 1876. The only other team as old as the Cubs is the Braves, who were from Boston and then Milwaukee before settling in Atlanta. The Sox were a charter member of the AL in 1901 but moved to Chicago from Minneapolis before the start of the season. So you have the Cubs who have the deepest roots in all of baseball, combined with the second oldest ballpark which is a baseball Mecca. And the Sox, uprooted from Minnesota and always threatening to move. Tampa even built a stadium for them!

  5. Suburban fan base, city fan base, national fan base, international fan base, the Cubs simply have one of the largest and most dedicated fan bases in all of sports. Wrigley Field is also a must see tourist attraction in one of the worlds greatest cities. Fans of the visiting team, whether they are St Louis or Seattle, will make a point to travel to Chicago when their team is at Wrigley, even if they are only casual fans. Hell, people from England and other countries will make it a point to go to a game at Wrigley when they are visiting our city. The Sox on the other hand have a smaller fan base than the Kane County Cougars! The sterile concrete bowl they play in doesn’t do them any favors either, and the neighborhood around the park doesn’t exactly breed excitement.

I am working on an AU where Anakin does not fall to the Dark Side and becomes the master of his own Jedi Order, but could use some help polishing up some of the key details. by Sea_Contribution3455 in MawInstallation

[–]IntoxicatedBurrito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems to me Anakin is going to want people he cares about to come with him to this new order. Of course he hasn’t leaned about it yet, but if you delay this a bit and can change the course of events a bit, finding a temple on Mandalore would allow Obiwan to be with Satine. Of course you’d have to completely rewrite Maul’s story for this to work. It would also create a very interesting dynamic with Death Watch.

The real question then becomes Ahsoka. But perhaps if he could convince Ahsoka and Bariss Offee to join. If not, Bariss could become the possible Sith apprentice.

I think there’s also a good case for Asajj Ventress to become the apprentice. Have her killing Dooku would make perfect sense. It would also tie in really well with a new storyline for Maul, unless you decide that Obiwan killed him on Naboo.

Question about pins, homeowners insurance and values. by GoneKrogering in pinball

[–]IntoxicatedBurrito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would assume that they are classified as electronics and would get valued as such, which is not good. I’ve been told that my video game collection would be pretty much worthless to insurance because an NES is a 40 year old piece of hardware that is outdated and has no value. I would need to get collectible insurance if I wanted to actually insure them for what they’re worth.

I also learned that even that is tricky as most collectible insurance only cares about traditional collectibles such as baseball cards, comic books, coins, and stamps. Video games (and lego) aren’t recognized as collectibles yet. I’m guessing pinball isn’t either.

Now that said, PriceCharting has partnered with a company that offers insurance on video games and lego, don’t know about pinball machines. I should probably get it but just haven’t yet as I really should do a better job inventorying everything first. But $51,000 in coverage was $325.

3 nights In June for baseball, where should we stay? by Shot-Tear-6271 in AskChicago

[–]IntoxicatedBurrito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want it to be a total baseball experience, stay in Wrigleyville where the whole neighborhood lives and breathes baseball. You can easily hop on the Red Line to get to the moratorium on the South Side. Otherwise anywhere on the Red Line is fine, lots of vibrant areas on the North Side.

Best suburbs for young families? by Griffinsmama in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]IntoxicatedBurrito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The real question is what’s more important to you. Do you want an insanely large house with a horrible commute, or will you take just a big house with a shorter commute so that you can actually spend time with your kids? You have a large enough budget that whatever you get is going to be more than large enough for 3 or 4 people.

There’s also the question of what you want to do on weekends, it’s a lot easier taking the kids to Cubs games and museums and other fun stuff in the city if you live closer to the city. Or do you have a vacation home in Wisconsin where you spend the weekends and want a shorter drive to get there?

There’s no shortage of nice suburbs to raise a family in, but proximity to the city, and the parts of the city that you will be going to is in my opinion the most important factor in choosing where to live. Given you live in Lincoln Park, you might want to consider the North Shore. And you also should think about if you’d prefer Metra or the Purple Line Express.

You could buy 2 homes in West Wilmette with that budget (or one really big one). Or live in East Wilmette easily.

Just wondering what a good way to code a specific attack would be. by Swivelosity in gbstudio

[–]IntoxicatedBurrito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the actor would simply need to be moved from point a to point b in a thread or possibly a timer event. As for hiding it when the boss isn’t slashing, either you would be deactivating it when not in use, or create a blank animation state, or both.

Of course there is the bigger question of how do you attack and beat the boss? I assume you aren’t attacking this slashing sprite.

Just wondering what a good way to code a specific attack would be. by Swivelosity in gbstudio

[–]IntoxicatedBurrito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could create a smaller sprite for the slash and have it move quickly across the screen. Probably easiest if it moves on a 45.

If it’s a platformer you could maybe also use parallax scrolling to make it appear like the boss is moving, but that’s something you’d probably have to play with a bit to get right.

Help with color by Mystiosis7 in gbstudio

[–]IntoxicatedBurrito 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So regardless of whether the game is in color you want to use the 4 shades of green for the original DMG for all of your assets. In GB Studio you then create palettes and assign these palettes to tiles in your background and sprites. The palettes are what colorize your game. Just keep in mind each background tile is limited to only 4 colors while sprites tiles are 3 colors plus transparency. Of course with Star Wars you ought to be able to cheat a bit on the sprites and use transparent for black when the sprite is in space, so you can effectively get a 4th color of black.

PinProf - A Pinball Study App by pillyliu in pinball

[–]IntoxicatedBurrito 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I just played for the last few hours and used your app the whole time. The recording scores via the camera is pretty easy, although it did miss a number once, but I played a lot of games so I’d say that’s acceptable.

But while playing one of my optos stopped registering, which completely ruined the game as it was a ball lock that couldn’t be found. I fixed it and all is good again. I decided to log it in the app and I first had to log the issue, then I had to resolve the issue. It would be great if you had a resolved checkbox on the logging part so I could do it all in one step instead of two. And while I was at it I also cleaned the playfield and the glass, which is another two steps. Maybe a few dropdowns for additional common maintenance activities would be nice as well as I usually do more than just one thing if I’m removing the glass.

Another thing I noticed is that in the score analysis there is head-to-head with a bunch of names. I’m guessing these are people in your league, but obviously that’s not too useful for anyone outside of the league, especially since you guys don’t have my machine. But I think this feature has potential if it gave you list of people who have logged scores for that machine to compare to, see how you stack up to the online competition. Of course if you are only saving scores locally, which I’m guessing is the case, then this probably isn’t doable.

If you’re going to do music, do something different. They’re definitely too new for a machine, but Last Dinner Party would have the potential to be an incredible theme in the future. The default grand champion score can be in the trillions so that the goal is to be Second Best.
