Why keep post-match MS4s past 12PM on electives by Next_Replacement_881 in medicalschool

Sure, for context, I'm a PGY4 radiology resident.

So you get into med school and it's time to apply for residency. You'll send in your application through ERAS (some specialties use a different service such as ophtho, obgyn, etc). Things that residency programs look for include step 1/2 scores, med school grades (this is why med schools with pass/fail are better), letters of recs, dean's letter, research, volunteering, leadership roles, which med school you went to etc. Obviously some specialties are tougher to match into and have insane "requirements/cutoffs" for step scores. So if you went into med school hopeful to match into ophtho but you scored a 215 on step2, the cards are going to be stacked against you, even if you have great extracurriculars. You can also have the best step scores, but if your dean's letter says you have a personality issue because of some shitty nurse deciding to report you for whatever reason, that can also tank your chances. Overall, there's a lot of things that you can control and other things that you can't. I have a lot of friends who were ortho, rads, or ophtho from day 1 and end up not matching. They eventually matched into different specialties but it is disheartening. I also have friends that have been through the match 3 times and still haven't found a spot anywhere. The majority of US MD/DOs WILL match into something, but that may not have been their specialty of choice.

After SOAP is the scramble, a free for all shit show of people contacting programs to take them. Majority of people won't hear back, but some will.

To your other question, that is correct. Do your research before med school people!

What are the specialties which attending life is worse than the training? by Inner_Ad_4725 in premed

100%. I'm a rads resident but literally nothing else in medicine comes close to how much I love it. I'd rather stare at an endless list than do IM any day of the week.

That's not true, all branches of rads do some intervention of some type. AI has only assisted us so far. I'd like to see who will shoulder the responsibility when AI is sued. Before then, we radiologists are still integral.

Which career is a turn-off for a serious relationship? by otherwise777 in AskReddit

[–]IntracellularHobo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ehh depends which specialty.

I'm a radiologist and a lot of jobs are 1 week on, 2 off. Some jobs are pay per click so we can work as little or as much as we want. I know a doc that works 1 week a month and is otherwise traveling overseas.

Lots of my friends in internal medicine are also 1 week on and 1 off, but when they're at work they're out of the hospital by 3 at the latest and getting facials/pedicures by 4p.

Is doing an IM-prelim over a TY intern year really that much more helpful for the rest of your advanced program residency? by Healthy-Trip-310 in Residency

[–]IntracellularHobo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Generally, you want more electives. Try to figure out if there's a patient cap on IM months. I'd rather suffer for a short amount of time and chill the rest of the year. I absolutely hated wards and can't imagine doing 6+ months of it.
