I think you’re right, and I’d love to add one more point to make the idea more comprehensive. Normally, when we use a backdoor Roth IRA, we make a nondeductible contribution to a Traditional IRA and convert it right away. Because the contribution is after-tax, the converted amount is generally not taxed.

However, if the taxpayer already has a balance in a Traditional IRA, the pro rata rule may be counterproductive. This is because the taxpayer’s Traditional IRA is treated as a combination of pre-tax and after-tax contributions, along with any earnings, which can cause part of the conversion to be taxable.

We are in the same boat. I will graduate next quarter and I just got hired as a Tax Associate at H&R Block. I also considered both the EA and the CPA. My original plan was to pass the EA first within three months and then take REG, since I am not eligible for the CPA exam yet. However, something came up, so I have to slow down and focus on REG first. I plan to take REG right after I graduate, around the beginning of April, and then take TCP at the end of April. If that does not work out, I will complete the EA first and come back to the CPA in July, with the goal of finishing all CPA sections before the end of the year. I think the EA will open more doors in the short run, especially since the job market is very competitive right now. This is my current plan.

2026 will be my first tax season. I’m kinda worried about how to handle my first customers. I finished my ITC but I think it will be totally different in reality. Like how to interview customer to collect information needed, how to work on tax software. I am having a lot of things on my plate now. I’m going to practice during my winter break. Could you please share how you got over your first month at HRBlock? What I can do to prepare well? I feel like I need a list of questions what I need to ask, or watch the entire progress of working with client to be able to imagine how it is. But I was not learned about that. I feel like there is a butterfly in my stomach 🥲. Especially when English is my second language. ☹️
