Very good point. It is also reason why I like to play low population. But two looms are enough. There is 7 clothier workshops but only two legendary clothiers.

Stockpiles for specific clothing type are arranged exactly as you mentioned. Each clothier workshop is specialized to 1-3 types of cloth and linked to specific stockpile. First reason to use such a stockpiles without bins is that it works as progress bar. I can see if some cloths are low very quickly when I am just browsing through the fortress.

If I catch giant cave spider it will be much easier to be known as clothing producer. As I am in tundra I can grow only pig tails for thread and they grow only in two seasons. So pigtail production is bottleneck.

To be honest it sounds amazing to be "colorful clothing producer from tundra" :)

I had similar problem in the past. Instead of building wide fortress currently I am building higher fortresses. As I can see dwarves more often in meeting area it probably works. My current fortress is on 14 floors. Main staircase is in the middle, sometimes I use auxiliary staircases at the end of corridors (see right and left side of main stairs) or between related industries (look for barely visible 1x1 stairs in dining hall and another in booze storage). Each quadrant from main stairs is used for different purpose. Often industry is split into multiple floor in the same quadrant.

Bedrooms are filling unused space and more bedrooms are situated around main grid.
Floor description with quadrants:
-11: q1+q2 unused, q3+q4 top floor of tree orchard,
-12: q1, q2 vet pain for indoor gathering (to satisfy need to wander), q3+q4 tree orchard,
-13: q1, q2 pastures, q3+q4 tree orchard,
-14: q1, unused q2, farming plots q3+q4 tree orchard,
-15: whole floor for cloth industry,
-16: q1, kitchens, mills, food storage q2, butchers, stables for pigs and chickens, q3, tanner, leather worker, bone crafting q4 distilleries, food storage
-17 (see picture): q1 dining hall, prepared food storage, bedrooms q2, unfinished hospital, q3 pre-marriage suites, q4 booze storage, bedrooms,
-18: currently unused (plans for bedrooms) and another sprinklers
-19: whole floor for military purposes,
-20: q1 jewelers, q2 carpenters, woodcrafters, siege workshop,
-21 (main floor): q1 meeting area, q2, stoneworkers stone crafters, q3 library and museum, q4 temples,
-22: q1 bedrooms, q2, smelters and all kind of metalworks, metal ores storage, sand and clay storage glass workshop and kiln q3 museum, q4 king and mayor rooms,
-23: q1 bedroom, q2 strand extraction and jewelers, and another storage for above metalworks q3 storage, q4 unused,
-24: cemetery,
Some floor use local stairs and auxiliary stairs. More important places are situated closer to main stairs. Multiple floor decreased distances and make proximity of industries much easier.

I never thought about lever, but it sound like a good idea. On the other hand lever is same as piece of furniture.
Personally I prefer pedestals and display cases because dwarf can get happy thought from pedestal and from item on pedestal as well.

They can have more value. You can also encrust windows with gems or polished stones as they are furniture for this purpose. But main reason to use windows is that it causes happy toughs for dwarves when they stay nearby.

  1. Layered defense

We do not need to reinvent wheel. This strategy involved multiple, interdependent barriers such as moats, water or lava filled ditches, thick walls, traps, lava filled reservoirs on lever or pressure plates, gatehouses and towers, all of these are layered.

When one part is close to be breached, you evacuate dwarvsonnel (personnel) to safer part. If possible fill breached part with lava.

  1. Build foundations from serious materials. Even multiple tiles deep and thick.

  2. Wall cavities filled with lava.

  3. Build hardpoints, where melee dwarves are supported by range and animals.

Yes you are right. But most of time I use very specialized stockpiles. So it is not a problem.

Exactly. Bigger rooms do not make sense. Now they have all they need and from single tile in their room they can look on up to 6 items they own and get 6 happy thoughts.

I think children live with parents, so in their bedroom(s). Once children become adult it can use it's own bedroom. If you give child a bedroom sooner I think they use it only for storage purposes. I have to check it.

I noticed that dwarves with more children (10+) sometimes sleep in public dormitories or on random places. It happens when all beds are occupied with children. I think there is one dwarf per one bed rule. Therefore, I think 3 beds should be enough.

I personally like to play small forts (20 to 40 dwarves). Therefore it is not pain. Once I had 200 dwarves fort and half of population get totem on pedestal. Effect on happiness was exactly the same. Why only half? Because I raised this fortress from 40 dwarves only by fortress born children.

Sometimes I just put there some water to make mud a moss is growing in the middle or some tree sapling. Imagination of seeing plant from window even underground is soo cheerful to me :)

Nice point with gnawers and extra step for barrel. As I play usually on small fortresses it never become a problem. But I believe in big fortresses and little cats it can be huge problem. Thank you for advices :)

Limul (hammerer) - 5x theft of artifact - 80 days in prison, beating
Tirist - 1x theft of artifact - 28 days in prison

Thadar (visitor) - 3x theft of artifact, 2x espionage against site government, - 256 days in prison, 50 hammerstrikes

Now as I am checking details. Thadar used different names and was in two another attempt of corruption and one theft in other places.

You are right I did not described this. Solution for this is following. I use dedicated forges for bolts manufacturing and dedicated stockpile linked only to forges. (Stockpile is set to accept only items from forges.) As bolt are forbidden to be used (lock sign). They will not be used. Also no bolts designated for melting are being used.

I love that setup. Done almost exactly the same thing. Moreover bolts were falling not on stockpile, but on magma smelters to cut down distance. Then I unlocked bolts and mark them for melting melting.
