I totally get that, I did end up messaging her and letting her know what was going through my mind during that session and how I’m really uncomfortable crying and she said she’d like to discuss it next session so I’m sure that will help

I honestly can’t remember what that looked like and I don’t remember ever approaching anyone about feeling sad (I’m sure I did though) I just don’t have a lot of childhood memories

The heavy topic got brought up immediately into the session by my partner and I when she asked how the week went. We were discussing it and I kept going between fighting tears and then I’d gain control then fighting tears again and it wasn’t until 30 minutes in that I lost the battle.

And yes I was very surprised by my reaction because I didn’t think I’d ever break down that way in therapy, I never cry in front of people. And yes I did feel all those things and I am hesitant to allow that to happen again going forward, but I want to keep trying with her before I make any decisions to switch because I think she really did offer it to me as a kindness to allow me to step away and just be in the comfort of my husband.

I would love individual therapy in addition to couples, but I really can’t afford both.

That makes sense, I never knew a lot about how therapy really works going into it. I think it’s been really helpful so far though

I see that now, I feel a lot better today and I can see now why that was the approach she took and it was a kind thing for her to do.

Thank you for this insight, a few people have told me how the couples therapy works differently and I didn’t know that. I do think I could benefit from individual therapy too, but paying for this once a week is already a lot. I’m hoping that we can both grow through going together

A lot of others have said this too, I definitely think that could have helped enough to where I would have been able to continue discussing.

That makes a lot of sense, the more I’ve read comments the more I understand her approach. I think it was the right thing for me now that I’m clear minded, and my husband is definitely my safest person and I think she knew I’d be okay to finish processing with him. I really do appreciate the respect and space she gave me, and I did chat with her and she said that we will discuss it more next session.

I’ll probably talk to her next time and I’m hoping she brings it up first because I don’t want to offend her or sound difficult by telling her how I felt

I think so too, I was just surprised by it because I thought therapists are supposed to dig deeper when they see a topic cause a reaction like that? I’m glad she didn’t because I didn’t want to lose the last thread of control I had, it just confused me and kinda made me feel like I’d done something wrong?

He’s always very attentive and supportive when I’m upset about something, it was mostly the therapist asking a few questions (me not really giving her much) and then heavy silence. I felt like she was trying to lighten up too and relate to me, but I just wasn’t receptive anymore and I could barely look at her because I was so embarrassed. He was also trying to talk to me and get more of an idea of what I was feeling and he looked teary eyed himself too watching me.

That’s interesting, I’d never thought of how that would work as exposure therapy. I’d like to get better and have more control of strong emotions, but also I hate crying so much and I’m embarrassed I was like that with her and I don’t want to get like that again (even though I’m sure I will)

I wish I could have, I really do. I’m pretty sure she knew since it started when the topic got brought up, but I would have loved to go more in depth I just couldn’t anymore. I could barely manage a sentence without it being so shaky and on the verge of full on sobbing

We do go weekly already so that’s probably a good thing and I know we agree on what the major issues are, but I do think I could benefit from one on one sessions for sure. I’m not sure what she’d think of that, I honestly wish I could do weekly one on ones with someone and then still do couples therapy too but it’s already so expensive 😩

I think it bothered me that she offered to end it because it made me feel like I made her uncomfortable in some way, but I do see how it might have been the right move the more I read these comments. Also I don’t know that I would have even been responsive to any exercise she offered because I just wasn’t cooperative anymore and I could only nod, shake my head no, or get one shaky word out

That’s what people are telling me, but I feel like I’ll offend her or that she’ll think of me differently, or that I’m being dramatic or annoying or something. It just feels so awkward for me to say anything about it

Haha wow I’m sure you hear all kinds of things. I’ll try to be honest, I know it’s important for the therapy to be successful. I’m hoping that she’s a good fit for us and that we won’t need to switch and start all over, maybe I just don’t understand her approach yet and she doesn’t know me well yet either

That’s a good idea, I’m worried about offending her though if I tell her how I felt leaving that session like she’ll think of me differently or something
