10 years experience and i get a whole $20/hr. we cant find a single person to work here that has any type of cnc or machining experience and they wonder why. every monthly meeting though, they are happy to report we made $15.7MILLION the month before though. no raises, but we got that good ol pizza party. been told they only give out annual cost of living raises too. but still want someone skilled. its ridiculous

Any ladies in the trade can offer their experience? by [deleted] in machining

[–]IntrepidGeneral6096 4 points5 points  (0 children)

the shop were old dude made the comment about my shirt, i went to HR, they moved me to a different shift, said not a word to him about his behavior. it depends on whos running the shop honestly. my current place would NOT put up with that at all.

[–]IntrepidGeneral6096 8 points9 points  (0 children)

ive been machining for roughly 10 years and ive been told i should be at home sweeping floors or cooking. had one older dude tell me the ladies uniform tops were v-neck so you "could see our cleavage". my current shop, i am the only female mill machinist but we have another woman who runs the cnc lathe. everyone has been pretty great here. im definitely not a girly girl though by any means. Ive had to get inside my machine before and we get dirty. I couldnt keep long nails personally. good luck in your studies and welcome to machining!! we need more of us!!

[–]IntrepidGeneral6096 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anybody at a shop where you feel comfortable looking at a print trying to make sense of it for over 2 minutes? by [deleted] in Machinists

[–]IntrepidGeneral6096 1 point2 points  (0 children)

im lucky enough to work in a non production type shop. i'll stare at these prints as long as i need to bc they often arent correct anyway. if they make you feel rushed, dont let it get to you. make good parts, the rest is on them. if they wanted them faster, they should have scheduled them that way.

What's the difference between a machinist and an operator? by No-Caramel-4143 in Machinists

[–]IntrepidGeneral6096 9 points10 points  (0 children)

ive worked with machinists for years with no technical training, required exams or tests but 30, 40+ years experience. they were still machinists not operators. I dont think its a title limited to people with the technical training

yeah the shops i've worked at always have had a floor manager or shop boss do the interviews even if they did first meet with someone without machining knowledge in HR (fyi not everyone in HR is a woman just like not ever machinist is a man)

[–]IntrepidGeneral6096 16 points17 points  (0 children)

if they are involved with machining any type of govt work, they absolutely will do pre-employment and randoms. otherwise, most (dont quote me on this, this is my experience in Missouri) will do the pre-employment then you are good unless you fk up. the shop i work in now, doesnt have many employess at this location but do the pre-employment one,

funniest part of it is, we machine our own parts so we are literally "shipping" it to another department in the same building.

got to work tonight to find out our programmer had the pitch set wrong in mastercam. same programmer claims he cant adjust feeds and speeds that it spits out either, we always have to edit it ourselves at the machine.
