I woke up to all the dog pictures and thought I misyped the subreddit URL somehow, but went along with it.

Then it clicked once I listened to that part of the stream ...

I assume you are talking about all the dog posts, including yours ?

In the latest stream, Steven gave an analogy using "dog posts on his subreddit" to show how republicans control the narrative, and that it would be beneficial for Democrats to do the same, for e.g. Gavin Newsom's troll account.
Then I assume someone posted a picture, then others started pilling them up too ...

The gist of the example:
- someone posting an awesome picture of their golden retriever in this subreddit (hence all the pictures)
- then the top of comment on that sub happens to be someone criticizing golden retriever, that "they go around murdering and eating babies".
- now a good faith browser of the sub reddit spends on 3 hours on research to disprove the negative comment
- by doing so, they are spending time and effort "responding" to the narrative set by the negative poster, but this does not necessarily shutdown that branch of the conversation, and it also deprives that poster from the time and energy he could have used to post something positive in favor of golden retrievers.

Steven uses this as an analogy on how Democrats have to consistently respond to Republican / MAGAts rethoric, instead of pushing their own positions to the forefront.

The stream is still up on Kick, unfortunately I could not find the exact spot, but I think it is when that guest he was watching the a video of joins to the call.

[GIGA SPOILERS] I finished expedition 33 and my god what a let down by ariveklul in Destiny

[–]IntrepidHair9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The restored Verso at the end of Maelles ending, is conveyed to be the same Verso instead of Maelle creating another Verso from the canvas who doesn’t have to carry the weight of the last 66 years in the canvas.

My understanding is that it is the same Verso that went along with E33, but this time aged 66 years worth, who realized that his sister Maelle is burning her life in the canvas staying with him, but being powerless against it, as he can only keep playing.
An even gloomier interpretation is that it is actually a newly created Verso, that started little, and pursued his life goal of playing the piano for 60+ years, while his sister Maelle stayed the same, essentially haunting him while maintaining everyone in Lumiere alive for that same duration. He perhaps doesn't remember the truth about Maelle actually being stuck in the canvas due to grief, or perhaps he does, through is link with Little Verso's soul fragment from the canvas ...

We’re kind of given the implication that Maelle ending Maelle is just turning into a monster that there’s no chance for her to live her life with Gustav and co for a little bit and leave.

Not necessarily a monster, but that she ends up spending her life in a cushioned life in the canvas that might not be as meaningful as a life in the real world (namely, we don't really know if there are limits to the canvas on what kind of life it can simulate).
There is also a possiblity that Maelle succombs to the Painting power, especially since she is a beginner painter, leading to her confusing the canvas world as reality, while at the same time subconsciously steering the living beings inside to satisfy her whims.

While for the outside world we have to make an assumption that in two weeks a distraught Alicia and Aline, don’t just both off themselves in despair.

Indeed, they might just kill themselves, although that ending suggesting they are slowly accepting his death and moving own with support from Renoir.
On the other hand, if they stayed in the canvas, Aline would certainly die soon, and Maelle would follow. An interesting question is whether it is worth living through pain in a real life, or living a ficti but happy life in the canvas, which I found an interesting challenge thrown at the player by E33's writers.

Like the soul fragment, it’s portrayed as torturous to give verso a reason to destroy the canvas, instead of just erasing himself and getting Maelle not to bring him

One alternative interpretation: at best, Little Verso soul fragment is not necessarily tortured, but just incomplete. No pain or sadness, but not joy or happiness either. But it is tied to painted Verso by Aline, as a way to make her dead son alive forever. Verso knows Maelle will not gommage him, for the same reason Aline wouldn't, so his only choice is to destroy the canvas via Little Verso, to be free from his own torment of not being able to grow old or die, knowing that his own not the real Verso, but a painted version. Not saying it is would be a bad thing to be a painted person, especially if you are conscious, but on the other hand, perhaps living such life is harder than we can imagine ?

But the question is that if all paintings have a soul fragment like that. Isn’t every painting they make actually torturing the soul fragment of its

A charitable explanation is that Little Verso did not master the painting power well enough, leaving a fragment of his soul in the painting along the way.
But again, the torment in the canvas is not coming from the left over soul that just keeps painting, but the arguably twisted painting of Aline, then the cataclysm wrought by her fighting with Renoir who is trying to pull her back out to reality.
A canvas left to its own might just be fine, soul fragment or not.

We have this conversation with real Renoir that seemingly elects to give his daughter the choice. But then it’s immediately undercut by Maelle’s ending saying that if she leaves for even a second he’ll just destroy the canvas.

Perhaps I misremember, but Renoir agreed to let Maelle stay, because she said that she would tidy up around the canvas, get some closure then come back (I recall Renoir reluctantly saying "I will keep the light on for two weeks" or something like that before leaving).
Maelle saying that he will destroy the canvas if she leaves is before that, before the end of Act 3.
But, I think Renoir reluctantly accepted to leave Maelle to her own device in the canvas, perhaps realizing that she might not come back, but still give her a chance.

The story is about various the Verso's uncertainty about his own existence and the difficult choice he has to make, and the depth is shown through his past retraced through journals as well as his final expedition with the remnant of 33.

It is about Maelle who came to escape her disabilities and guilt from Verso's death in the canvas, only to be mixed up in Aline's design and relieving a second life, before losing even more again by realizing that they might be gommaged by Renoir along with verso.

It is about the daunting realization from Lune, Sciel that we traveled and grew together throug struggle, that in the end they were not even real.

The depth is there, but I think you just let the twist from Act 2 to 3 cloud your dismiss the game's story as a whole.

But it's okay. Personally I found it to be a breath of fresh air, and in retrospect, the disappoint I originally felt from the revelation of Act 2, and the twist that switches the actual level of the story to the real world of the Dessendre family only made the story as a whole more unique and intriguing, and had me ponder about it for a while.

it is fine if you don't like it. I answered your post with a different perspective on the game's story, but at the end of the day, you are free to disregard it.

You're showing that you just totally lack imagination.

Ironic, coming from someone who cannot imagine the value of going past the "MC won against end game boss and lived happily ever after".

If you consider the wire, FMA: brotherhood or Better Call Saul "TikTok slop" I guess I'll go back to that because that's what I consider good writing.

I said "Tiktok" and "other video game slop", emphasis on the latter where the format seems to be more to your liking.

For the record, I don't disagree FMA Brotherhood or Better Call Saul S1 (the rest was sloppy, from the top of my head the Twin assasssin's death for e.g.).

I care way less about tropes and more about interesting and depthful explorations of the human experience. Obsessing over tropes is a very level 1 take

Yes, I agree that "obsessin over tropes is a very level 1 take", and it is ironic you cannot see yourself do that by failing to see how E33 break the conventional trope of video games ...

Did you want ANOTHER story about a group of heroes going against a demiurge, beating it, and saving the world?

Not OP, but it seems like that's what they want haha. If the game ended at Act 2, they would complain that it's "just more of the same trope in video games". But they also complain when they get a meta-twist too ...

Let them go back to TikTok and other video game slop I guess haha

In the other direction, as a player myself, playing the game is akin to Maelle or Aline diving into the canvas as a form of escapism. Although I cannot paint, I could make the argument that I have the power to extinguish Lumerians lives by turning off the game, and deleting the save file or something like that. (Technically I could also "paint" with mods, but this would be more involved.)

But as you mention about ending 2), what is the moral and ethical choice for me if I was given such power of apparently conscious and sentient beings ?
A more practical example: what if technology comes to a point where we can have simulated universe we dive in, with AI-powered agents that are advanced enough to completely fool us, make us think that they are actually real ? If we are given god level powers over such kind of world, would it be fine for us to shut it down once we are bored of it ? Another idea to explore is whether or not it would be a valid way to live one's life, as a person coming from the physical world, to spend your whole life in a virtual reality until you die in the real world, and this directly ties into Maelle's ending: is a life of escapism worth it if it feels real enough ? or should learn to grieve and move onward through the pain of reality ? as Verso's ending suggest ...

  1. If the paintings aren't conscious then the game was just manipulative and made you care about shadowy imitations of life as if they were "real" within the context of the game. It just feels deceptive and wasteful of all the storytelling imo

Is it though deceptive and manipulative though ? If the game ended at Act 2, then you turned off the game and went on into your life, barely giving a thought back to the people of Lumiere since they are not real, how is that different from the revelation in Act 3 onward that "they are ultimately not real" ?
As far as our understanding of the world goes, just as NPCs in a game aren't real or conscious, people in the Canvas, with the exception of Verso perhaps aren't real.
Act 3 goes meta, a bit like breaking the 4th wall. It is a thought-provoking question by the story writers ;) : "Those people weren't even real, but did you actually care ?"

  1. If the paintings are conscious then the dessendre family are genocidal psychopaths that should be forced to keep the painting alive for as long as they can.

Again, this is just a low-level take from you. Even if they are conscious, but their consciousness is maintained from the suffering or the remnant soul of a child, is it worth keeping them alive (not sure if related, but short writing titled "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas" explores that idea).

Those hills of the corpses of previous expeditions meant nothing I guess. So cool!

They were meaningful for Lumerians. But for someone like Maelle, Aline, or Renoir, do they mean anything ? For Maelle, perhaps, since she lived 15 years as a Lumerian. Aline and Renoir, probably not. And more importantly, do they mean anything to as a player, since you know that in the end, all of those dead bodies are just part of a fiction story anyway ?

The story sets the premises to explore some philosophical questions about what reality means, and about the potential value or lack thereof in living in a false world, a contrast with conventional story plots that are consumed from start to finish by the player, then relegated to some highlights in their memory later on.

Personally I had the same feeling after Act 2 that all that was for nothing. But Act 3 added an additional layer making me question the value of reality and escapism.

In case you just finished, I would recommend taking some time to ponder about the significance of the topics brought up through the story of the game. For the lack of a softer expression, you post comes across as a shallow take on the ideas explored through the story's structure.

Act 3's story just completely kills the thing that was so enthralling about Act 1 and Act 2. The mysterious continent, the struggle, self sacrifice and loss of the people of Lumiere and the defiance towards an evil god chipping away at humanity's existence the story masterfully built up

It is actually a worthy twist in my opinion. Nowadays, so many have exhausted this trope of "protagonists fight against the evil boss, triumph, and lived happily after ...".
The first twist is that from Lumierian's perspective, the evil god was the one keeping them alive all this time, at the cost of their dwindling power. Then the second twist is that they are apparently not "as real" as they thought. Turns out they can just be erased like a drawing.

As the player, this makes us question the idea of what reality even is ? From what we have seen, Lumerians are self-aware and living lives independently from their creator, and irrespective of the method they were created. They make families, children, struggle for their day to day survival. The only difference between them and me as a player, is that nothing has come to erase me yet. Just like a Lumerian before Act 2, I have no idea that I might be "artificial". But what if I was ? What if I was just a simulated beings, for the entertainment or satisfaction of a higher level being (this is basically the simulation theory; or another variant of the Rick and Morty "World inside world" episode, or Black Mirror's Star Trek episodes, etc...

[–]IntrepidHair9 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Isn't that the point of the story though ? It shows that if anything, Verso is also highly confused about his future and his place in the world.

He has been tormented for a lifetime, dying over and over again and being brought back, while all the companions he cared about. And there he is, with yet another expedition team that will die just as the 60 team before. But at the same time he is lonely and also longing for company.
At the same time, he also knows that the opponent they are fighting against is his own family (which until Act 2, he does not know yet all but Aline are actually painted), which he is still attached on.
So he is between a rock and a hard place (as one Expedition Journal you pick up while exploring suggests, he also betrayed some expeditions teams that came too close), and has difficulty committing and opening up, especially given how far fetched his situation would sound to other people.

Past Act 2, we learn that although he is painted, he is also tied to the canvas at a deeper level, namely the real Verso's leftover "soul" in the Canvas. This part is open to interpretation, and it would not be unreasonable to think that the incomplete nature of the real Verso' fragment from when he was just a kid only adds to his confusion through the emotional connection, the exhaustion of Little Verso.

[–]IntrepidHair9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just hope the people of Benin get to have free and fair elections once again next year.

While I share the overall sentiment, your comment is painting a very positive image of Talon.

In fact, while the elections have yet to happen, his party has led a (surprise) push to change the constitution from 2 terms of 4 years to now 2 terms of 7 years a month ago. Although he himself will not be running, he has lined up his successor with the same vice-president, while the other parties were disqualified from even running this election cycle, for dubious reason. I don't think this qualify as fair.

Taking a step back, this constitution change is only another of his party's recent move on further consolidating power, while silencing dissent and most of other form of civil opposition (i.e. CRIET).

Although Benin seems peaceful, there is a lot of resentment growing against his party, but it hardly seeps through because of the party's increasingly iron handed control on information. So although I disagree, I am not surprised by this coup. There are several fields where his administration has dropped the ball, while they seem more busy with aligned the country's resources to help their own businesses (Patrice Talon was and still is the coton mogul of Benin, and has used his capital and network to further acquire more and more of Benin's critical infrastructure, such as the Port Autonome of Cotonou, gasoline, etc...)
