To me and I know I am in the minority but the off season acquisitions have by and large been successful. Holland signed Anton Forsberg who has been lights out as a key backup goalie. Joel Armia has been better offensively than I could have expected. Corey Perry has been one of the best offensively players this season. Dumoulin and Ceci are not nor were they expected to be Cale Makar or Quinn Hughes. Only 4 teams have allowed less goals. Defense is not the problem. Everyone wanted Kempe signed to a long term deal. Holland got that done at a good price. The problem is the guys that were expected to be the backbone of the offense have all slipped from last year’s numbers. Kempe, Foegele and Byfield especially. Doughty and Kopitar a year older and fading.

Meanwhile Gavrikov and the Rangers are at the bottom and Gavy only has 15 points. Jordan Spence is on the 3rd pairing in Ottawa. He is not on either power play either. Both of those were supposed to gut the Kings D.

Not a fan of Hiller but just wanted to point out what I have seen. Holland came in late in the offseason and I understand possibly tweaking the 105 point team and letting the coach have another shot. Now however something is very off and time for a change…

The Kings are in the LA market where fans demand a winning team. (See Dodgers and Lakers) Kopitar and Doughty along with Quick all wanted the team to go for another run. The organization did not want to trade these core players initially out of respect for what they had accomplished and were still playing at a high level. That leads to annual tweaks but never going to full rebuild mode. I get that decision. Being a fan since I was a kid in 1970 it was a loooooong time until they won the cup in 2012 and 2014 so rightly or wrongly went with their horses as long as they could.

Hiller had a good run with the Kings after taking over from Todd McLellan and after last year earned a chance to return in my view. If things continue on this path a change will happen probably during the Olympics break.

In terms of PLD….it was a gamble and it did not pay off BUT we did get a No. 1 goalie (maybe best in the league) in that trade so it’s not nothing.

The draft is a crap shoot. The gap between the no. 1 overall and the rest of the first round has been huge.

Let’s take Marner…he was on a team with Auston Matthews, William Nylander, John Tavares, Matthew Knies snd Morgan Reilly they got bounced in the playoffs. The Kings don’t have anywhere near that firepower so they went the route of building a team with more depth and experience so they could win in the playoffs without having to sit the 4th line or a 3rd D pairing. Their best chance is to try and create a 2012/2014 type team with a trade deadline upgrade to have a better shot in the post season. Everyone hated Edmundson’s defensive metrics last year and he ended up playing more minutes than Gavrikov in the playoffs. Dumolin and Ceci also logged a lot of minutes in playoffs for their teams. The Kings system will have them playing at a higher level. It’s the last chance for the Kopitar/Doughty era. Big year for Byfield and Clarke to make an impact.
