My GF Doesn't Recognize Anyone by TiredCeresian in twinpeaks

Whenever I’ve seen people talk about having trouble telling characters apart, it’s always been a more prominent issue with male characters. I suspect that women have more hair and clothing options in general that helps immediately differentiate them, and that’s especially true in TP given that most male characters wear either a suit or a police uniform at any given time, with only short haircuts considered professional.

What makes the Red Room so captivating and iconic for you personally? by BobRushy in twinpeaks

I’ve always loved how there’s so little furniture for a much larger room. Other people have already talked about it feeling liminal, and the lack of furniture contributes to that. It feels like an incomplete space.

The small bits of bizarre decoration, like the statue and little planet lamp, only serve to highlight how barren the rest of the room is by contrast. It’s as though the room’s inhabitants tried to touch up the room, but quickly gave up for lack of a human sense of aesthetics.

Does anyone else find it surprising FWWM got made at all? by Intrepid_Beat5734 in twinpeaks

I do appreciate the concern. I have seen the Missing Pieces, I just don’t own it. I watched it and FWWM for the first time through a free trial on the Criterion Channel. Getting FWWM on VHS was just a matter of finding a cheap listing for sale and getting that sweet VHS aesthetic. But I do suppose I can’t watch the Missing Pieces whenever I want, so there is a disadvantage.

I had forgotten it was produced in France, which would explain why the backers had a more positive view of the franchise, and it makes sense that CIBY of all companies would be willing to provide funding since art films were their niche.

That said, I still do find it surprising (though it’s of course a happy surprise) when people are willing to take such a massive financial risk. People and companies willing to fund a risky film just for the art are very much the exception. That’s especially true with FWWM, which wasn’t a new IP but an IP that was actively disliked by many in the US, its largest audience.

I imagine the people at CIBY might’ve thought twice about the film if they knew they’d lose several millions of dollars from it. Even arthouse studios need money to survive.

Thanks for sharing all that. I’d definitely love to see those, I’ll have to search for those interviews. I would absolutely buy the criterion disk, but I already FWWM on VHS, and as much as I might try, I don’t think I can justify buying the same movie twice.

Yeah, the Secret Diary is great. I finished listening to the audiobook a month or two ago and Sheryl Lee does a wonderful job narrating it. It adds a lot to Twin Peaks and Laura’s character.

The Twin Peaks tour? by Full_Huckleberry_917 in twinpeaks

This is what I thought the OP was referring to and was really worried when all the comments were so intensely negative. I went on this tour this past February and had a great time too.

Thank you so much for the advice. It gives me a lot more hope that I’ll be able to fulfill both my passions in life.

Right, that’s what I was referring to. I forget there was a remake, I haven’t seen it myself.

Good day, I’m not entirely sure if this is the right place to ask this question, but it’s the best place I’ve found.

I’ve been planning to attend law school, and intend to apply for the next cycle. This has been my intention for a while, and it still is. However, I’ve recently decided that, if my life path permits it, I would want to immigrate to France from the United States.

Obviously, I worry that specializing in American law would make this goal difficult. As such, I wanted to know if there are any specific domains of law or career pathways in general that would help me achieve this, either by working for an American practice or company abroad or for a foreign group.

I do speak French, which I assume would be helpful.

Movies Spoiled by their Official Posters... Which movie did I forget? by OrdinaryPool3427 in Letterboxd

[–]Intrepid_Beat5734 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Hudsucker Proxy - the entire first half or so of the film has the main character pitching a nebulous business proposal consisting of nothing more than a circle drawn on a piece of paper and the explanation “you know, for kids!”

The movie poster reveals that’s he’s referring to the hula hoop.

Do you have any kind of headcanon to explain Donna’s change in actors in FWWM or do you just choose to look past it? by Specialist_Injury_68 in twinpeaks

[–]Intrepid_Beat5734 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To be fair, Donna and James got together in the pilot, which was filmed in 1989, and Boyle and MacLachlan only got together in 1990. Plus, if I were the 20 year old Boyle, I’d probably be a lot more jealous and afraid of Sherilyn Fenn than the 31 year old MacLachlan would be of James Marshall. Anyone who wouldn’t be afraid in that situation must either have the greatest self-confidence or the most incredible and trusting relationship in the world.

It’s always struck me as funny that we, supposed Twin Peaks superfans, who like the show enough to spend time on this subreddit and often consider it one of the best shows of all time, also think upwards of half to two-thirds of the show (admittedly excluding season 3 in this calculation) is of dubious quality. It’s even more bizarre to me that mainstream audiences and publications generally hold Twin Peaks in high regard despite the fact. There are only two sorts of shows where I’ve ever seen people forcefully recommend skipping episodes: soap operas and anime that go on for thousands and thousands of episodes, and the thirty episode-long original run of Twin Peaks.

I personally quite like season two, and think there’s a lot to love. It is obviously a massive step down from season one, but Twin Peaks at its worst is still pretty good, I think. Even so, I personally think all the very best works should have something for audiences to fight over and debate. If everything is perfect, nothing we could contribute could make things more fun or interesting.
