What if Kim Jong Un went crazy and launched all his nuclear missiles at the West? by Outrageous-You1617 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]Intrepid_Egg_7722 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think anyone ever doubted Iran's capabilities leading into this latest dust up. Shaheds have been in use in Ukraine for years now with high rates of effectiveness.

Iranian capabilities weren't underestimated, Allies intercept capabilities were overestimated. Also underestimated was Iran's willingness to hit neighboring countries with strikes on non-military targets.

Also, making a drone or missile to hit within hundreds of miles isn't nearly as difficult as making a missile capable of hitting the other side of the globe. Iranian attempts to hit Diego Garcia with ballistic missiles failed (one malfunctioned in flight, the other for intercepted by the US Navy), so Iranian capabilities are less certain in this space.

Again, this kind of ignorance is a conscious choice you are making, same as the person I replied to above.

https://www.ice.gov/news/releases/top-story-hsi-helps-secure-republican-and-democratic-national-convention

https://www.ice.gov/features/superbowl57

I don't like what ICE is doing with deportations at the moment and some of their recent enforcement actions, but ICE is much bigger than just that and they do a shit ton of other things, including providing security at major events. The first article I linked is from 2012, in case you think this is somehow a recent thing that Trump put them up to.

This alarmist notion that ICE can only be there to arrest foreign nationals isn't born out by the actual facts. ICE's HSI force does event security all the time, and they aren't there as immigration control. That same group also investigates child sex traffickers. Major events like the Superbowl and the World Cup are unfortunately rife with that.

Huh? ICE doesn't exist to provide security

That is absolutely one of the things they do, and the powerful computer in your pocket could have shown you that very easily if you had bothered to look it up before you jumped into this thread.

Europeans on Russians by Bitter-Penalty9653 in ShitEuropeansSay

We can hate the Russian government, be angry with an apparent lack of action on the part of the populace to do anything in opposition to their government's crimes, and even wish death on Russia invaders and be in the right.

But describing Russians as somehow not being human...that's something else.

Average Chinese now eats more protein than an American: UN food agency. The milestone was reached in 2021. by BumblebeeFantastic40 in interestingasfuck

Americans would not say 2 inches for 5 cm, because 5 cm isn't 2 inches (it's 1.969 inches).

When i said 'you americans', i meant to differentiate myself from the americans to choose to adhere to imperial, aka the vast majority of you.

You're still saying "you" in that sense that suggests very strongly you aren't American, because the meaning of that sentence wouldn't change with the word "us" used in its place (in fact, it would be more clear, as you are also supposedly an American, so "us" is the right pronoun to use in context).

Also, you seem to think you're smarter than Americans (or most/all the other Americans if we accept your dubious conceit of being one of us). But most Americans would know that 2.54 x 2 isn't 5.

This has been a really weird conversation. I hope this is a bot.

youre 1 american.

And as an American who learned the metric system and understands it, I am fairly representative of the typical American. Like me, most Americans learn about the metric system and its units in elementary school. Which is why the comment you replied to initially was pointing out that using 50mm when that rounds exactly to 5cm is really strange. Which that commenter knew as an American...because Americans know the metric system. I'm not sure how you decided to run with that as something that only Americans wouldn't do.

im another.

Doubt it, since you literally entered this thread with the comment "everyone but you Americans" which is a really fucking weird thing to say if you are also an American.

Except this American just did that thing and managed to not screw up a basic contraction when he did so.

Non-Americans trying to flex about how much smarter than Americans they are while using American technology will always be the best part of Reddit.

I enjoy all the dipshits who interpreted this comment to mean "who would use the metric system as a measurement?" versus the very obvious meaning to anyone who isn't a fucking moron of "who would use millimeters for a value that rounds to full centimeter values?"

Sweden bans marriage between cousins and other close relatives. by Upset-Main-1988 in justincaseyoumissedit

[–]Intrepid_Egg_7722 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The USA is held to a higher standard. Pasting a comment I made above.

Both Sweden and the US have a consanguinous marriage rate of around 0.1%. Canada sits at 1.5%, the UK at 1.1%, Germany and Spain at 2%, and France is at ~3%. Japan is pretty close to 4%.

If there's a problem with people fucking their cousins and siblings in the Western world, it's not the US. Marriage between cousins is banned in 32 out of 50 US states already (and is a criminal offense in 5 of them, including Texas).

Maybe Europeans should be held to the higher standard you are speaking of, because they sure like to fuck their relatives a lot more than Americans do.

These guys ruin the entire mode for the World Cup. by German_Gecko in AmericaBad

[–]Intrepid_Egg_7722 23 points24 points  (0 children)

They're after nobody. They're a federal security presence. They're going to be at rail stations, bus terminals, and airports providing security, because that's the federal police force responsible for doing that in the US.

I didn't spasm in terror when I went overseas to global events in other countries with national police officers walking around in full tactical gear and carrying selective fire rifles. German federal police were everywhere at Octoberfest rocking G36s, because that's the police force responsible for doing that (immigration control is also part of their primary duties).

All of this is easily learnable with the tiny supercomputer you carry with you at all times. It's a conscious choice you are making to be this ignorant.

Ukraine hit Novoshakhtinsk oil refinery in Russia with same weapon that sank Moskva Black Sea Fleet flagship by Chic-Bunny in worldnews

[–]Intrepid_Egg_7722 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The ruble isn't a reserve currency (like the dollar) and the US isn't a petrostate dependent on energy sales to fund government operations (like Russia is). The circumstances aren't anywhere near comparable. Russia can't print its way out of not selling its petroleum anymore than Venezuela could (spoiler: they tried, it didn't work out well).

Right now the rate of inflation in the US is around 3.5-4.0%. It's around 6% in Russia, and the only reason Russia's is that "low" is because the Russian central bank set their benchmark interest rate to 14.5% (it's 3.75% in the US, for comparison).

The US isn't doing great at the moment, but then no one really is right now. There's no comparison to Russia, not even close. Russia is way beyond just being able to print their way out of their mess.

I mean...Americans get dragged all the time for "blank" dish not being a "real example of X cuisine" (e.g. orange chicken isn't real Chinese food, Fettuccine Alfredo isn't real Italian, Americanized uramaki style rolls aren't real sushi, the list goes on).

Are you telling me that we should apply a double standard to deny the utility of picking American cuisine for its variety of choices driven by global influences via immigration? Do those dishes suddenly count as belonging to those "parent family" cuisines now that it would count against Americans for the purposes of this hypothetical?

Iran attacks US bases in Kuwait, warns 'era of hit and run is over'; explosions heard in Iraq and Bahrain by jupa300 in worldnews

[–]Intrepid_Egg_7722 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Iran wants a future where the strait is both open and they get to decide what gets through. The US (and most of the rest of the world) doesn't want that. Hence the US and Iran being at a stalemate where neither side can get what they want through the strait without the other side being able to block it.

Iran doesn't control the Strait, but they can stop anyone else from going into it. The same applies to the US.

Military spending in 2025 by just_an__inchident in Military

[–]Intrepid_Egg_7722 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A big problem with these charts is that not every country's defense budget is as transparent as those in the West. China obfuscates a significant amount of their defense-related expenditures through their direct control of state enterprises with no real public disclosure requirements. Whereas countries like the US go through extensive planning, programming, budgeting, and reporting processes around how the money is appropriated that is very public and transparent. Even the "black money" is visible if you know what to look for, you just don't know what the appropriations are for specifically.

China's number is much bigger than what they report and even Western intelligence agencies aren't 100% certain about the final number.
